The name Zoey

My husband and I both like Zoey, but I have some reservations...
-- Is it too spunky or child-like? We usually go for more traditional names - the, what if she's a lawyer thing...
-- What if she's not cool enough to pull it off?
-- What would we name Zoey's siblings?

Is anyone named Zoey (or Zoe/Zooey)? Do you like your name? What's your middle name?

Anyone know an adult Zoey? What's she like?

We like that it's a name that's been around for a long time and still feels fresh. I also think it sounds nice with our last name, which ends with an o.

Thoughts?

Re: The name Zoey

  • To be honest Zoe isn't that fresh it's been quite trendy the last couple of years and adding in the multiple spellings it's even more popular.  Both Zoe and Zoey have been in the top 50 for years and when the new list is posted in a week or so from SS I'm betting Zoey might break 20 and Zoe will probably go below 30 where it was in 2013.  As a name I think it's fine just overdone.

I love the name Zoey. It was the name I always wanted growing up. I think it's fun and happy. And if you want a literary spin, Zooey (pronounced zoo y) is a beloved JD Salinger character.

I think it's cute and fine for an adult since it isn't unheard of these days.

  • Love it!!!!! And seriously love the questions you brought up! Lol I think the same things when I'm thinking of names!
  • I absolute love Zoey!! It was always my number one name for a baby girl but 5 years ago we got our puppy and I couldn't help name her Zoey lol.

  • Our daughter is Zoey Renee. I agree it's a more popular/modern name but I wouldn't consider it a common one. I've been teaching 3 years (I know not a very long time) and haven't had a Zoey/Zoe yet. I had a boy who's little sister had the name but not a student in my class.
  • My niece is Zoe Marie. She is 12 and loves her name. There is also the actress Zooey Deschanel

I love the name! Just think of how cool, beautiful and badass Zoe Saldana looks! And how quirky and fun Zooey Deschanel is.
I know it's hard picturing a name on a baby if you have never met a Zoe.

Spelling works either way. Write all the ways down on paper and decide which way you like more.
  • I don't know a single Zoey, but I'm in the south so every one is Brittany or Kayden or something. Zoey Deschanel is the only Zoey i can think of, and she's awesome. I'm not sure if the name would effect the work ethic of your child or her cool factor. Lol.
  • My friends have a Zoey Marie. It's very fitting for her. She's a very outgoing little girl.
  • I love the name!  There are plenty of teens and adults with the name (there was an adult character on LOST named Zoe and she was presented as a sophisticated/educated woman) so I think you're fine in the "what if she's a lawyer" department.  I have had a couple of students with the name and they were both very sweet girls.  You could pair it with something really traditional like Elizabeth or Katherine :)

I suppose it's hard for me to imagine anyone over the age of 30 with the name Zoey
  • My parents chose "Alex" (I go by Ali) over Zoey when they named me and I've resented them for it lol. I've always loved the name and would love to have it now as an adult too. Do it!

  • We have the name zoey as our girl name too!! Her middle name will be japanese because my husband is 1/2 japanese- Zoey Chiyo. I think it's an adorable name and they don't have to have a big personality for the name- it's just fun! Zoey means life and Chiyo means thousand years, eternity so it's perfect for her.
  • In the TV show Hart of Dixie the main characters name is Zoe Hart and she's a Dr. Though she is a fun person like Zoey Dechanel. I would go for a more classic name for the middle name. I think Zoey is a perfectly fine name for an adult.
  • Zoe Saldana, Zooey Deschanel, and Zoe Kravitz are female celebrities of different generations that come to mind. I think it's a beautiful, quirky, and strong name. Go for it! Btw, my name is Alexa and I can't tell you how often I was told in college that I have a bartender/stripper/porn star name . . . and I'm an attorney. The name you pick for your daughter will be just fine! And I'm considering the name Zoe too if I have a girl :)
  • Zoey Grace is on our list :) I love Zooey Deschanel who is the inspiration behind this choice. I think she fits the name perfectly. She's an adult, but still spunky and fun!
  • Zoe was the girl name we chose (actually, my husband did! he loves it!)... but we are having a boy! Poor hubs is upset he doesn't get to use his name of choice. I think it's really cute. On my own I probably would have chosen something different, but I was persuaded of its cuteness after my husband lobbied for it for years-- before we even were married and way before we ever started trying to have kids. If we have a girl someday I am sure we will use it!
  • I love Zooey. I think it's quirky and cool. It may be somewhat popular but I work with an all girls program and have literally had over a thousand girls through my door and can think of maybe 3 girls named Zoe or Zooey.

I also know an elderly woman named Zoe but she goes by Zo now. So it's not like it's a name that was just invented. I also think of the JD Salinger book!

Im a firm believer that the person makes the name, not the other way around. Zooey is a great name!
  • I love love love it! I think its impossible to not like a Zoey!

Our dog was named Zoey too and she was the best.
  • I like it !  it reminds me of Zoey Deschanel and Zoe Saldana and I love those ladies!

  • I like it a lot! Zoe means "life". How fitting for a little person! :)
