Baby Names

does this sibset ring a bell?

If we have a 3rd kid, we're going team green. We have our girl name picked already. We like Theodore for a boy. Our other boy is named William.

Do the names William and Theodore ring any bells?

DH reminded me that this is Bill and Ted, as-in the crappy early Keanu Reeves movie. We know the movie is from our generation, but don't know how young you'd have to go before people quit noticing the connection. I didn't notice it at first, but now I can't un-notice it.

Just wondering how obvious it is.

  • Would not have made that connection..
  • Loading the player...
  • Omg, I would not have put the pieces together. I think it's only a problem if you actually call them Bill and Ted.

Kinda OT: my mom says that if I were a boy, she planned to name me William Robert until my dad, ever the redneck, told her that my name would be Billy Bob. It totally tanked that name for her. Thank goodness I'm a girl.

  • Only obvious if those are the nicknames you use for your kids.
  • EH Bill and Ted's is like a timestamp to my early teens so I did make the connection but smiled about it. It's not bad.

I'm doubting you would use those nicknames so I think it's a non issue.

I suggested William Robert to my husband to see if he would catch it. He fell in love with it and didn't catch the connection. I pointed it out a few days later. He is still bitter.

  • I wouldn't have made the connection. The movies are slightly before my time, but my husband is obsessed with them so I'm very familiar. Most people my age (mid-late 20s) and younger don't always even know the movies, though.

Never even heard of it. Not sure what generation it's from but I'm 27 if that helps at all.

I first was going to say Presidents of the US.  But then I read Bill and Ted and said "oh yeah".  But do you call William, Bill?

  • We call him Will.

And for reference, I'm 35 and DH is 33.

  • I'm 31 and the first thing I thought when I saw the name Theodore was Alvin and the Chipmunks.  I didn't put the sib set together at all.

  • We debate between Theodore James and James Theodore. The con of fn Theodore is the Bill and Ted thing. The con of first names James is that our last name also starts with S. And running the first and last name together with the same sound is a pet peeve of mine.

Of course right now this is all for fun. We dont know if we want a third kid, or if we'll be able to, or if that kid will be a boy. We have plenty of time!

  • I didn't make the connection until you mentioned it but now I can't unsee it, like you said. Even if you didn't use those nicknames, I'd be afraid that every time the boys went out to play I'd think they were going on Bill and Ted's excellent adventure.
  • I'm an 80s child and Theodore made me go directly to Alvin and the Chipmunks.  I didn't notice the Bill and Ted reference until you pointed it out. Few people will notice unless you point it out and even then they will probably think it's cute.

I like Theodore James more than James Theodore for what it's worth

Another nn for Theodore is Theo instead of Ted.
  • I think it won't be too obvious unless you actually use the nns Bill and Ted.

That's what DH suggested. But it always makes me think of the Cosby Show

That's exactly what my husband said when I suggested Theodore nn Theo. Then he proceeded to do just the worst ever Bill Cosby impression ever.
    Sigh.

  • I wouldn't have noticed. And really, what are the chances you are going to call him "Bill"? Most William's I know, either go by William, Will or Liam.
