Odd to hear heartbeat at 6w6d?

I had my first U/S appointment this morning at 6w6d. The doctor started by walking us through what we saw, pointing out the baby, the yolk sac, and the little flicker that was the heartbeat. He measured, we talked about EDD, he took a few different pics. I thought we were done but then he turned on the sound, moved the ultrasound around and we were able to actually HEAR the heartbeat. He said it wasn't mine because it was way too fast and you could see the flicker on the screen moving in time with the sound. Is that weird? I didn't think we would be hearing the heartbeat for at least another couple weeks. Needless to say it was an awesome thing to hear and DH was over the moon. Just wondering if anyone else has heard their baby's heartbeat that early?

  • I heard my baby's at 6weeks.

  • It is possible to hear the heartbeat as early as 6 weeks, as this is when the heart starts to beat.  It is just more likely to hear it around 8 weeks.  Some can't hear it until 10 or 12 weeks.  It all depends on your baby's position in your uterus, your weight, and the accuracy of your due date.

Glad you were able to hear it!!  It is amazing, isn't it?!

  • That's fantastic! Yay!!!
  • The ultrasound machines mimick heartbeat sounds until it is actually large enough to be picked up on a doppler. So the actual noise you heard was more like an interpretation of how it WOULD sound at 160bpm, 175, etc.
  • Yep the heart starts beating around 6w. What an awesome surprise for you both! Glad to hear everything is well!

  • We are due at the same time! I he my first ultrasound yesterday at 6w5d and heard a heartbeat. Almost shed a tear. Congrats!
  • Yay that's awesome! I know with the Doppler they use you need to be further along but with the ultrasound it can pick it up pretty early.

Heartbeats are fully developed at 6 weeks and its possible to hear it when at u/s exam. Though it is harder to track or hear around that time, so not everyone is so lucky. I go tomorrow so my fingers ate crossed. 8+5

Heard ours yesterday at 6wks 4 days. It was so loud and strong! What a blessing!
  • going on Friday! mine will be 6 weeks 2days :)

  • I think it depends on the equipment in your doctors office. My doctor said his u/s machine wouldn't pick it up until at least 8 weeks.

Hi. Its fine. I heard mine at 5w5d:) I am now 10 w2d and also heard it with doppler at 8 wks. I have had two previous miscarriages so my DR did my first early..i was surprised to hear it so early. Stay positive!
  • So wonderful, right?!? Congratulations! I got the same lucky surprise this week: did a sonogram to measure how far along I was-- 6wks it turns out-- and there it was, fetal pole in tact and little heart beating at 150. So incredible, and such a surprise to see. What an amazing time...

We just heard the heartbeat at 6 w 5 d via transvaginal US. We could 'see' the flicker of the heartbeat on the regular US but couldn't 'hear' the heartbeat until she inserted the transvaginal. It was actually a complete shock for us too, I had experienced very heavy bleeding including clots just last week and assumed I had MC. The US was meant to check for 'leftover tissue' not for a viable, healthy baby. Sometimes our bodies (and lives) are full of surprises! Congrats :)
