Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro and Excitement!

Hey ladies!!

I'm new to this board. So I'd like to introduce myself. Although, like everyone else, I hope to be joining a birth month board soon. :)

My husband and I have been trying very hard to conceive our second child for a year now. We experienced a loss in December that seriously broke my heart and spirit. After the loss we decided to invite some scientific assistance. I started taking Metformin to control PCOS, but still, after 4 cycles, I wasn't pregnant. This last cycle we decided to try Clomid.

I just found out from my doctor that the progesterone test shows that I did ovulate!! Such a huge weight is off my shoulders, just knowing that my body responded well to the Clomid. I'm so nervous and excited to take a pregnancy test, but terrified of false negatives. So I will keep waiting.

Thanks for letting me share!

Re: Intro and Excitement!

  • Hello & so, so sorry for your loss!

I do hope for a BFP soon too but I never want to leave these ladies!

  • Hello and welcome :)  I know you're seeing a specialist (I assume you're seeing an RE if you're on Clomid?) but I'd love to suggest charting.  It will help you feel like you have more control over the situation.  Check out FertilityFriend.com to assist your charting.

@Everycol0r Thank you for your sympathy :)

@antoto Actually, my regular OB gave me the Clomid and the Metformin. Thank you for the website suggestion! I am terrible at charting!! I didn't really chart this cycle, but I did keep a detailed calendar of OPK and CM. If we didn't get it this cycle, next cycle I will definitely be temping.

Oh that's great that you're familiar with charting!  You'll fit in very well here :)  You will see a lot of us using FF to chart and you can creep on ours by looking at our signatures, if you want.  I noticed some ladies on here have said that if you need Clomid you typically should be seeing an RE, is that something you have considered?  I know Clomid can get pretty gnarly.  My friend couldn't go on it because of the higher risk of having multiples.

Hello and welcome! Clomid is a pretty serious drug, you should really only be taking it under an RE to make sure the proper monitoring gets done. Paging @TheBorg7of9 since she's much more of an expert on this

Clomid is a serious drug that should only be taken when properly monitored by an RE. You have no business taking it from your OB. Did you and your husband have all necessary testing done? Are you sure Clomid would even help you and the problem isn't your husband?

@TheBorg7of9 We need your help over here!
  • I have a question...My doctor wanted me on clomid monitored and I insisted non being monitored.  But why are all these OB's prescribing the clomid if they shouldn't be?  More of a curiousity.  Why would a medical doctor prescribe something that is dangerous?

Welcome. I could be wrong, but conception starts your Year TTC timetable over? I'm very sorry about your loss but I think perhaps you are jumping the gun with the Clomid. Especially with an OB-- you should be getting ultrasounds to check follicles & predict ovulation...

Today is going to require Turkish Coffee...

Thank you for reading tone into a post that wasn't there. I chose to include a gif that is humorous. Clomid is a serious drug with a 6 time limit of use in a lifetime. Providing you with information is beyond supportive. I'm looking out for your health and wellbeing (and potentially that of your unborn children) and you think I'm not being supportive?

@cbreef this sounds right to me.  I would suggest seeing a new OB - and I might even suggest seeing a midwife instead.  I feel like I hear an awful lot of stories of women being prescribed Clomid when it is not needed.  Hey, this should be good news to you!

I don't know all the specifics, but you should be having ultrasounds done to check your follies.  Also, did you have an hsg to make sure that your tubes are clear and did your DH have a SA?

My comments didn't show up in my other post.  Weird.

A lot more than what you appear to have had done. You aren't even at a year post-MC. I'm not sure I would be jumping to medicated cycles at this point.

    This should help:

I guess I'm just nervous now. I did what I thought was right and now you guys are saying I was wrong and my trusted doctor was wrong. I was given Clomid because I have a history of long cycles (50+ days). It was supposed to help increase our chances and provide more opportunity to conceive. My doctor never suggested that it was dangerous or unsafe. She's been my doctor for over 3 years and seen me through two losses and one successful pregnancy. I've had multiple tests done and she believed this was the right thing to do. She did tell me that if I didn't ovulate after 50mg and trying 100mg she would refer me to a specialist.

OBs are great at helping you through pregnancy & birth. They are not that great at getting you pregnant.

I'm surprised you are moving on so quickly without trying again for the full 12 months? I think getting a second opinion from a specialist could benefit you.

@cbreef did you have an hsg and did your DH have a SA?  Clomid won't help if your tubes are blocked or if there is an issue with your DH's sperm.

  • Hello and welcome,

You are not the first and will not be the last to come on this site after having taken Clomid unmonitored. I hope you are not one of the people who have a bad side effect, but you have no way of knowing without being monitored.

I'm sure you trust your doctor and she's an amazing OB. But she is doing you a disservice by giving unmonitored clomid. You can always go back to her after you are pregnant, but OBs do not have the expertise to treat infertility. This is proven by her giving you clomid unmonitored.

The ladies here are just trying to help you, so please try not to get defensive and listen to what we have to say. I have followed the ttc journeys of probably 100 women on clomid and I have seen what can happen when it is unmonitored: cysts, ER visits, multiples, thinned uterine lining, overresponse and underresponse.

First, clomid can only be taken 6 times in your life. That is because (although unproven) doctors suspect a link to cancer. Also, if it doesn't work the first 4-5 times, it is probably not going to work. Therefore, it is in your best interest to have your husbands semen checked and your tubes checked first. If those are bad, all the clomid in the world won't get you pregnant.

    ... To be continued.

    Thank you for the website.
I did have most of those tests done before my last pregnancy and my husband's sperm shouldn't be an issue. We have another child and he has a child from a previous relationship.
I'm 32 years old and I've had diagnosed PCOS since I was 18.
At the last test (10/14) my FSH was 5.5 mIU/mL and my LH was 16.5mIU/mL and my prolactin was 7.5.
I also had an ultrasound right after my most recent loss and everything was clear and normal.
Maybe this information will help. I really do feel like I know what I'm doing and I trust my doctor.

Just because you've had children before does not mean your husbands semen analysis is still good and your tubes are still clear. There's such a thing as secondary infertility.

I got pregnant and miscarried in September 2009. We could not get pregnant again and it turned out to be he had a low sperm count.

Again, I'm sure you OB is a good OB, but she does not have training to deal with infertility.
