Recovery

I'm 7 weeks postpartum and have had a few bouts of fatigue and dizziness hit me in the last day or so. I'm a photographer and had my first shoot since baby yesterday evening and toward the end of the shoot I became extremely dizzy and broke into a sweat.. And this evening after chasing my toddler around the backyard I felt really lightheaded as well. My first thought is that I'm just not used to that much exercise since giving birth as I've only been doing long walks and chasing my one year old around, but then I read the thread about exercising and see what everyone else has been capable of doing already and I feel pretty dang weak! Lol Is anyone else still feeling out of sorts 7+ weeks later?! Should I be able to push myself harder than I am? I'm feeling anxious to start working out more and being more physically capable of things, but it just doesn't feel like I'm back to my normal self yet..

Re: Recovery

  • Something I maybe should have made clear on the exercise board - I'm breastfeeding too (I don't know if you are) and therefore I'm having to eat almost 3000 calories a day, and STILL go to bed exhausted. I'm sure the slightly broken sleep doesn't help (my daughter sleeps well but wakes up for two quick feeds in the night). Your body has been through trauma and you need to listen to it - check the amount and types of food you're consuming - I work with photographers all the time and your job is quite physically demanding!

  • I'm 7 weeks post partum as well, and I only go for walks as far as exercise goes. Yesterday evening, we went for a longer walk and I had baby in a carrier rather than a stroller. It was a warmer day, too, and as soon as we got back home, I felt dizzy and tired. Even spending an entire day out of the house makes me tired still. I'm breastfeeding, and I'm trying to get used to increasing my caloric intake to compensate for the breastfeeding, not to mention making sure I drink enough water. I'm sure it's difficult for you with another LO running around. Don't think you should be somewhere physically just because others are, everyone's different and recovers differently!
  • Check with your doctor to see if you have anemia. If you are cleared and healthy, then take exercise at your own pace, and stop comparing yourself to others. Only you had your pregnancy and birth. I personally avoid threads like that because i'm not interested in how amazing and wonderful everyone's exercise routine is, and how they are doing Olympic triathlon shit, blah blah blah.

  • I have episodes of lightheadedness usually when standing quickly and assume it's either low blood pressure or low blood sugar. Lo is a month old and on the boob so much I don't typically get to eat properly
  • Check with your doctor as well but it sounds like it may be diet related. Make sure you are consuming adequate amounts of protien, borderline excessive amounts of water, and cutting out as much simple carbs and sugar as possible from your diet. And once you're doing all that then take exercise gradually. You won't be able to do what you could do before. It takes time :) when I eat poorly (especially not getting enough protien.. Even when not breast feeding or postpartum) I get just like you described. And of course there is the added lack of sleep .. And not getting enough water will for sure do it to you too!
  • Water, water, water! Make sure you hydrate. I am also 7 weeks postpartum and I felt the same way you do a few weeks ago. I actually felt like I had the flu after an active day. Try to good as well. Good luck!
  • I second the suggestion about anemia. I have very low hemoglobin and if I forget to take my iron supplements I get extremely dizzy and short of breath. Ask your doc if you should be taking iron, and also try eating iron rich foods (red meat, spinach, etc)
