Trying to Get Pregnant

UPDATED one cycle complete! My new temping experiment...

So, I start talking to DH last week about temping and explaining it to him.  I've been doing it forever, but I guess he got curious for the first time.  He starts arguing with me about the "basal" part of basal body temp and how it shouldn't matter whether you take it right after sleeping.  I say well it does matter and he bets me that it doesn't matter and that I could take my temp at the same time of day at another time of day and still see a shift.  I don't think this is going to work!

Anyway, this is how crazy I am.  My last day of bcp is today.  I am getting off even though we are not TTC yet because I have been bleeding every two weeks for two weeks.  Basically, I bleed for two weeks, then two weeks off, then two weeks on.  It is horrible.  I am going to chart to avoid (using a real chart) until July.  I am also going to do a separate chart where I take my temp at night.  This is basically to prove him wrong, but I am also really curious now about what that chart will look like. lol.

Wish me luck!  Feel free to tell me how crazy this is too.

UPDATE:::::
So, just my luck, my thermometer began to act crazy around CD11. It said once my temp was 90.10.  Then a couple times it turned off by itself while taking my temp and started beeping and flashing on and off.  I am pretty sure I ovulated on Cycle Day 13.  My fake temp night chart does not show anything biphasic.  But I think both charts are messed up by my thermometer acting weird.  Anyway, maybe next chart we will have a better answer. Oh well.

Update below….
My TTC History:
2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
2012: Baby #1
2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • Men! Lol. I tested this theory for about a week just to see, I totally got different temps, but I'm interested to see what you find.
  • Loading the player...
  • In theory it should work if, say, you shifted to a different time in the middle of the night, but I would think any other time during waking hours would be too impacted by variables like how active you've been that day, what you've eaten, what you just finished doing, etc. to show the same general pattern.

  • This is really interesting! Can't wait to see what you find out!

We agreed that my other temp time will be right before bed.

He also thought the temp shift at ovulation was like 2 degrees. Ha!

Interesting theory, hmm... what does your DH do for a living?

I am married to an engineer and I haven't given him a full temping tutorial yet but I am sure he would come up with his own theories as well.

Are y'all doing anything to make this bet/experiment interesting?

    Just bragging rights.

He is a chemistry teacher. We literally went back and forth for 10 minutes. He said "basal" doesn't mean anything and it's just a way to sell thermometers. And that your temp should stay the same all day. And he didn't believe me that even getting up to pee would change my temp. We'll see...

  • My DH and I often watch an hour or so of TV after dinner, before going to bed - now you have me wondering if that would be enough "rest" (aka not moving) to see a shift... I'll have to see how your experiment goes! :)

  • I definitely want to know what you find out. I'm definitely down with temping but haven't done it yet because we're trying to keep things casual what TTC and I worry that temping will keep everything at the forefront of DHs head. I don't want to put pressure on TTC.

  • Super interested to see what you find out!
  • Oh I am so interested to see what you find. My DH and I had this same exact conversation a couple weeks ago. We're both engineers so we love to figure this stuff out.

I have a long commute (like an hour) so he said "instead of stressing out when you wake up, just take it at the end of your drive home". So is very much like to see how this experiment turns out!
  • You are hilarious, and the experiment should be epic. Happy charting/proving him wrong. :-bd

  • *Toddler mentioned*

I have to know how those pan out! DH never argued about it. I guess he and I were so exhausted with DS being sick constantly, and the two febrile seizures he had this year put me on edge. Didn't even know those were a thing until he had the first one.

Good luck on your experiment, and for sure keep us posted with your charts!!

  • Interesting!! I think you're right and won't see as much of a pattern because I'd think your different level of activity through the day will mess it up. Just out of curiosity, I have taken my temp as soon as I wake, and then get up and pee, then take it again and it's always higher.
  • Humm this should be interesting!

I've taken my temp upon waking and then again about 15 minutes later after walking around and going to the bathroom and it raised almost a full degree- hence I think getting up to per would matter!

Today was going to be my first temping day, but I totally forgot to temp! lol. I put my thermometer on my alarm clock, but my husband's went off first and I went to the bathroom before remembering.

I am still trying to figure out whether I should start a new fertility friend account or what.  I don't want to mix them up.  So, I was thinking I would keep the night time one on paper until I get through the cycle and then start a new account.  We'll see.

  • I'm curious to know what you find after a cycle or 2. If we don't conceive in a reasonable amount of time I might try to fight with my anxiety and temp but my fiance's youngest son has nightmares and usually ends up in our bed around 3-4 am so temping with him in the bed does not sound like something I want to try to explain. If I decided to temp, doing it before bed would be so much easier.

Wow, you really keep raising the bar, the goddess of knowledge. =D> =D>
  • I love this. If I can temp at night instead of morning that would actually make temping a feasible option if/when I decide to take it on.

Thanks... I'm still a bit on the fence about it. I tried opks in my first 2 cycles and ended up having a freak out because of timing. I am taking small steps towards full blown tracking but my biggest concern still with temping is my fiance's 8yo son who more often than not ends up in our bed around 4-5am after nightmares. I'm not sticking a thermometer in my vag with an 8yo right beside me and I can't temp orally because I'm a mouth breather
  • I love this! I have been so curious about the differences and have thought about trying an experiment like this but I am way too lazy and too new to FF to pull this off.

@TheBorg7of9 - you really should write a book one day....then everyone will say "LURK. LURK. LURK. Read TCOYF. Start temping. Download FF and take the tutorials. And for the love of God - buy @TheBorg7of9 's book...it's pretty much everything I listed in one place."

I think vaginal temping is over-recommended… I bet mouth temping would work just fine.  People like to see "pretty" charts, but as long as you have a temp shift, a rocky chart does not matter.

  • Oh wow, how cool. DH and I sit for about an hour or so to watch a movie almost every night. This would be so helpful to take my temp at night. it would be more consistent. I mean..in theory, why wouldn't it work if I do the same routine every night, use the same thermometer, and take it at the very same time each night. Hmmmmm
