I want Subway! Is it safe?

Me being a first time mom I don't know what is and isn't safe to eat. Having cravings for Subway. If anyone can tell me if it's safe or not that'd make me one happy gal!

My doctor told me no cold cuts.. But, I won't lie, I'm ignoring that one (the reason is because of risk of listeria, salmonella, e. Coli, etc.). I have had subway a bunch of times while pregnant and never thought twice about it (chicken breast, heck yeah!)

  • I don't know if toasting would kill the bacteria if there was any. Worth asking your doc maybe... the risk isn't huge but if it does happen, could cause miscarriage in bad cases.
  • It appears that Listeria is easily killed with heat you just may have to ask for double toasting

  • Since I'm high risk and diabetic I had to go to a nutrition class for gestational diabetics. The nutritionist said the reason they say no to cold cuts are for the reason the ladies listed above, but also because when you're pregnant the baby lowers your immune system so that your body doesn't attack the baby. So long story short, you're more susceptible to catch things that normally you wouldn't. I've been staying away from them because it's only for nine months and a healthy pregnancy and baby means more to me than a sandwich but I do miss them. My friend suggested that I cook the meat to kill the bacteria and then put it in the fridge to get it cold again but for some reason that just doesn't sound too appetizing to me. Haha.
  • Listeria is s real risk with cold cuts, I highly encourage people to listen to this recommendation and make sure your meat is 'steaming' hot! I had a good friend loose twins at 6 months due to listeria! Heathy baby is so much better than a slice of turkey :)
  • Maybe try their pizzas or roasted chicken sandwixh and just have them microwave it well.
  • My OB said to just toast or steam cold cuts. For some weird reason, subway always gives me the runs, so I'm avoiding it like the plague. But I've gotten other sub sandwiches and I had them heat the meat thoroughly.
  • ^^ what PP's said. The meat needs to go to steaming. A listeriosis infection is no joke. The chance of having a stillborn at any trimester is increased exponentially with this occurring. Which is exactly why they say don't eat unpasteurized cheeses, undercooked meats… Including hot dogs that have not been brought to a steaming temperature. You don't want listeriosis! There are lots of options at Subway that you can eat. Try the meatball sub or like somebody had said before the pizza. I think they have a chicken Parmesan sub? Anyhow, stay away from the cold cuts and less and they are the one brand that they sell in the supermarket that are safe during pregnancy. And if you cannot stay away, please just microwave it or eat it up until it is steaming. I hate to be the wet towel but you're asking for advice I'm just giving you the advice that I've been told repeatedly.
  • So out of sheer paranoia I heated my meat for my sandwich today and it was literally steaming in 30 seconds so it really doesn't take long

  • I live in the uk and our national health service guidelines say the risk is very low and it's not classed as risky - however I do get them to toast my sub a little longer just to be sure!
  • Just toast your sandwich.

^This.  Just make sure you heat the meat to kill any potential bacteria.  I did this with my 1st pregnancy and was fine.

  • Ok, I'm not super experienced and by no means am I qualified to give medical advice BUT I used to work at a Subway. And pregnant women are there all the time. 2 of the girls actually had babies while we worked there. My advice is as long as you feel safe and think it looks clean (I've been is some places that made me feel like they never washed anything because the look dirty), you should be safe. The toaster ovens are VERY hot so a 30 second toast should be great. If the meat looks frozen you might have them microwave it before they put it on the bread even if you have it toaster again. The chicken beast are the hardest to warm all the way through. Don't feel bad for asking that you food be handled a certain way. Subway's moto is "have it your way! "
  • Subway is fine and you can eat it cold.    Honestly you are more likely to get listeria from veggies, not lunch meat.

  • I tend to have a baby about once every four years since the late 90s. Ever time I'm pregnant, the lists of do and don't eat changes. I just use common sense. I have switched back to iodized salt though, didn't realize my new clean living was leaving me potentially iodine deficient.

  • About the veggies, what's the best way to clean them before eating? I'm trying to up my fruit and veggie intake! Is a simple water and vinegar soak good enough?

You can buy a cleaner at any grocery store. It's glycerin based, all natural. You soak fruits and veggies in the mix and water and then rinse thoroughly.
  • I ha subway the other day. Like other ladies said try an option that isnt cold cuts. The meat isn't safe for us to eat until it is heated to a boil. This can be very serious and can affect the baby after birth as well.

How do you know for sure the listeria came from lunch meat? Genuine question. The majority of cases are from fresh produce, with some ice cream scares recently.
  • What do you guys think of the ribs Sandwhich? How safe is that?
  • I understand why everybody is saying that the risk is low. The thing that I don't understand is that since we all have access to microwaves, toasters, ovens and the sort including subway itself... Why take an unnecessary risk?

I'm a high-risk and I have to take certain medications. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm hedging my bets and taking my risks where I need to. Maybe subway is it for the OP or for some of you?
  • I was told by my OB you can microwave cold cuts, but you must eat them warm. Putting them back in the fridge allows the bacteria to grow again.
