Try to get it to stop?

So I called L&D, because I was having pretty uncomfortable contractions that woke me up,diarrhea, nausea, back pain and still thinning. (Our L&D you have to be buzzed in, so we have to notify them if we are coming) I explained this to the nurse, told her this is #4, I'm 39 +3, VBA2C, GBS+, the works. This being #4 I know what info they need. She tells me "well sit in a warm bath, drink some water and try to get labor to stop. I'm pretty sure you're in labor at this point. Do not do much walking or anything that would help progress the labor". I know it's 4:30 in the morning and maybe I don't understand, but has anyone been told to stop labor/not help it progress? Just to clarify I'm not asking if I'm in labor, just wondering if anyone else has been told to stop it.

Re: Try to get it to stop?

  • Maybe she misunderstood you? It doesn't sound right to me since you are far enough along! I haven't been in this situation, but I would call back.

  • I agree. It sounds like you should be admitted.
  • At my hospital they want us to be 5-1-1.  Contractions five minutes apart, one minute in duration, and for at least one hour.
  • Could she have meant to try and stop the contractions if they were not real labor? I get contractions, but laying down, taking a shower/bath, etc will stop them, so I know they aren't actual labor. If your body really is ready, nothing is going to actually stop the labor (though it's possible to slow it down). Maybe she just wanted you to make sure it was real before heading in? I can't see any other reason why she would ask you to do those.
