So, DH wants to buy a gun...

I grew up with guns, but for some reason I am hesitant. I know this was a topic a few days ago, but never read it. Suddenly, I wish I had.

How many of you have guns in your homes?

  • Yes, DH has a 9mm.  It is locked up.  Nothing wrong with a little protection in case of an intrusion.

  • I hate guns.  I wouldn't allow it.

And yeah, yeah, "guns are only dangerous if the intent to harm is there" and blah blah blah.  I still don't like 'em.  And idiots happen, so I don't buy the "only if the intent is there" defense.

  • I wont budge on this - guns aren't allowed in my home.

  • We have several. DH is a police officer and he hunts.
  • I grew up in a house with guns. I knew how to shoot a shotgun by age 10, a Glock by 12. DH's family is as close to totally against guns as it gets. That being said, we have two guns in our house. High on a shelf in our bedroom closet, with gun locks securing them. I like to hunt, and DH is learning (with my dad), but mostly for me it's an issue of feeling secure when I'm alone.

  • No guns in our home.  DH has a couple hunting guns but they are locked up in a safe in his outside shed.  He doesn't even use them and keeps them dismantled at all times (except when hunting).  He wants a handgun but I say NO WAY.
  • We do.  The bullets are locked up.  I still don't like it, but DH is a hunter so we'll always have guns.

  • We have several. DH and I both have concealed handgun licenses. We are responsible and educated with them.

LOL.  Is it a Barbie gun?  Does it come with lollypops?  Or a "TRY ME!" sticker?

  • I hate guns.  Even with them empty and/or locked up, things happen.  There are too many stories of accidents to sit well with me.  I hate that we are such a gun-obsessed country.

  • We don't have any but DH wants one. I don't really see a problem with it. It would definitely be locked and out of DDs reach if we got one. About all the stories about kids getting the gun and hurting/killing themselves, well obviously the parents are morons and left a loaded gun in reach.

    This I can respect.

  • We have several - DH likes to hunt and has a couple of small hand guns for protection.  I personally will feel better once we have them in a gun safe, but for now, they are on a top shelf in our closet.

I disagree. Kids are very observant. They will see where you lock the gun, where you hid the bullets and the key, and how you loaded it. It's not always the parents fault.
  • Um, no. If there was a gun in my house someone would get shot.

I have no problem with people who do have guns though. As long as the practice gun safety and are educated on all the laws ect.

    I agree.  But it's negligent.

Ok, maybe not every single story. But A LOT of them are stupid parents. There are a lot of stupid people in the world... Plus if we ever got one, I would definitely keep it way out of reach for a young child and try to teach gun safety/responsibility.

  • We have over 30 guns in our house.

Most of them are locked away in a safe. DH and I are both very educated on them (we're both in law enforcement and he is also reserves Army after actively serving for 10 years). We know how to use them and have a very healthy respect for them. We have child locks on the ones in our hide-away night stand drawers. We are also looking forward to child education classes on guns.

  • My DH is a police officer so we have his gun in the house.  But it is only there when he is home.  When he is at work, so is the gun.  We keep it locked up in his closet on a high shelf.

  • We have several - hunting and handguns.   He's ex-Army, highly trained and has a concealed carry permit that requires classes to be renewed.  They're locked up dismantled and DH carries the key on his person.  I also have a rule that if it's in the house, I need to know how to make sure it's unloaded (as well as how to load it and fire it).

I have a problem with people that have them and have never so much as taken a safety class.

Just wanted to add that I respect and understand that you wouldn't want guns in your home. But I think that if they are safely stored and the child is taught gun safety, it shouldn't be a problem.

  • DH is also a cop, so we have one to. He wants me to get a CC license and to go shooting with him- but I am a little hesitant. I never grew up with guns. I totally agree- education is a must! Maybe I should go then, huh?
  • We have quite a few ....  we're not concerned now because they are locked up and the kids will never be able to have access to them.  DH wants to teach them "safety" when they are of age .... which I encourage him to do, god forbid they find one outside playing somewhere.
  • We have several (pistol, rifle and AR-15) because we're both into target shooting. DH wants to get into competition and possibly hunting. At first I was hestitant to actually own but we talked it over. We both grew up around guns, and have seen responsible gun owners. Statistically, pools are more dangerous to children (that was my main issue with it-kids). It's a personal decision, so I'd encourage you to talk it out and read about the issue. Why does your husband want one?

  • DH has a .45 its in a safe though. I wouldnt let him get it without the safe. He went and got it after he found out we were having a little girl
  • I carry a revolver, DH has a 9mm and we are looking into getting a shotgun for the house.  They are kept in their own protective LOCKED cases, but are readily accessible to me.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • DH has a ton, I have one of my own that my dad bought when I moved out on my own. I lived in a crappy neighborhood when I moved out by myself. DH picks up money, has a concealed weapons license and hunts. I plan on getting mine when we have enough money.

Huh?  Would he have wanted a gun if you were having a boy?  ::Scratches head::

FWIW, no guns in my home ever.  I would vote for a total U.S. ban on handguns.

Really?  Where do you think all the existing guns would go?  And do you think those that don't care about existing gun control regulations would suddenly stop finding guns through other means?

i said it as a joke... lol. and about the ban on ALL guns i guess the right to bear arms is ridiculous as well... :/

Same here. Hand guns, hunting rifles, and assault weapons. I have said it before too that I think all kids should know gun safety even if you do not intend to have one in your house.

LOL at this....the people you don't want to have guns for very valid reasons are the same kind of people who don't care about the legalities of owning a firearm anyways.  This type of legislation only hurts responsible law-abiding citizens.

We have many firearms in our house, DH collects WWI, WWII, and Vietname firearms, and does sport shooting and long-range target shooting.  FWIW, I used to be very uneasy about the idea of owning guns or having them in the house and used to support gun legislation, but he is so safe and very very much into the education of gun safety and being a responsible gun owner that he changed my mind and made me see the "other side" of the gun law argument.  All of ours are locked in safes and the ammunition is locked up seperately.

No, but it wouldn't be any easier for them than it is now.  No background check in over 30 states.  It's ridiculous.

More guns = more gun violence.  Plain and simple.

Don't worry.  I'm pretty sure I'm part of a very tiny minority on this one.

If you have a good safe it isn't one with a key and it isn't one that can be broken in to by anyone.
