Sleeping at Night — The Bump
Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sleeping at Night

My LO is 13 months and ever since she has been sleeping through the night, she has always slept 8 or 9 hours and no more.

For example, her bedtime is 8:30p. Without fail, she will be up 5:30a or if we are really lucky, at 6a.

I feel like she should be sleeping longer at night, but it feels silly to let her cry it out at 5:30a when she has slept through most of the night.

Any thoughts?

Re: Sleeping at Night

  • Have you tried putting her to bed earlier?

It sounds silly, but as soon as we put her bed back to 6:30/7 pm, she started sleeping 13-14 hours a night.

  • This sounds pretty normal to me. We put our daughter down at 8 and she is always up between 5 and 6. If its after 5 I don't fight it. Before 5 I go lay down next to her crib and she usually settles down. If your LO is getting a decent nap during the day 8-9 hours may be all she needs at night.

  • That does seem so counterintuitive!  Thank you for the suggestion!

  • Maybe I will just have to suck it up and deal!  I hear all of these stories of babies sleeping 10-12 hours a night and I will admit - I may have gotten jealous.  Doesn't a nice 7am wakeup sound lovely? :)

    Thank you for response!

  • @gigglesgufaw I totally agree that having a baby that slept longer would be nice sometimes, and for a while I was also jealous when I would hear about all those other babies that supposedly slept for so long. At one point I just decided to stop stressing about it and embrace my new normal ha ha. Maybe your husband/partner can take over a couple of the early morning wake ups? I say this but my husband never does even if he says he wil ha ha ha. Oh well I kinda like my early morning snuggels now ;)

Also 13 months is still young! Has she gone down to 1 nap during the day yet? If not you may get more sleep at night once she starts taking only 1 nap during the afternoon ;)
  • @rspalding001 I forget how little she is.  She's walking and jabbering and climbing stairs and throwing temper tantrums that I forget that just 1 year ago, she was a little bundle in my arms.  Wow!  I can't believe what a difference 12 months makes!

She still takes 2 naps, but my thought process is that if she were to sleep longer at night and wake up a little later in the morning then she would be okay with waiting until 1p to take a nap instead of needing a nap mid-morning.

I need to remind myself to take it just one day at a time. :)

My bbg sleeps at least 9hrs. When she kept waking up at 4am her pedi said to keep her up late 30min past her bed time then the next week, an hour then 1.5 hr the next week until she woke up at a reasonable hour.
She sleeps at 1030-1130 and wakes up 800-1000
And takes at least one nap in the afternoon and another in the evening if she's really tired
  • @r0zz Thank u for the reply. So, it sounds like 9 hours of sleep is not abnormal. We just have to make up our minds as to whether or not we would want to adjust her bedtime.

    I appreciate everyone's help!

My daughter wakes up btwn 6-6:30 no matter what time she goes to bed. It varies btwn 7-8 so putting her down earlier may work. She also naps from 11:30-2. For months, she was waking up btwn 5-5:45 which was slowly killing me. But then on her own she slowly started sleeping later ( around 17 mo) so hopefully your LO works this out too.

  • I agree with putting LO down earlier. Mine goes down at 6:30/7 and wakes to nurse at 5-ish, but will go back down until 7-ish. In fact, my 2 y/o and 4 y/o also go to bed at 7. They generally wake up around 6:30.

  • I think it's completely normal. Our 13 month old goes to sleep between 7:00 - 8:00 pm and is up between 5:30 - 6:00 am every morning. She takes one 2 hour nap during the day.
This is our reality right now, 6 months from now I am sure it will be something else.

I am a big believer in this concept.  Some people find it hard to believe, but it's recommended by all the sleep "experts."  At 19 months, we usually put DS to bed at around 6:45 / 7 pm and he sleeps about 11-12 hours.  When he wakes up, he plays quietly in his crib most mornings until he gets up for the day a little after 7.  I really don't like when he goes late to bed (7:30-8 pm), I don't think he sleeps well those nights.

My brother and SIL have done the same with their 10 month old and she is sleeping like 13 hours + per night.  Sometimes she goes to bed as early as 5:30-6 pm.

  • I give DS a bottle when he wakes up at 5 and he will go back to sleep till 8 most mornings. Sometimes it doesn't work but when it does its gold!!
