Ideas for saving space in a 10x10 nursery? (Ladies with small homes come in!)

In an effort to distract myself from family drama I started trying to figure out a way to better organize the nursery closet. I am very Type A and do not like clutter - or at least clutter without a purpose. My work threw a big book shower last month, which was nice, but there's no way a kid is going to read half these books before the age of three- adult or no! So I took a lot of the older ones and hid them in Ikea baskets that go on a shelf in our living room. That said, I want to have some way to better organize the word recognition books. I am not wanting to nail anything to the wall because we are hoping to move in a year or so. But the space is TINY -10x10. (Our house is also pretty tiny- 1000sq ft no basement)

Can anyone else relate to the small space dilemma? Ideas in general?

(Ignore my suckiness with panorama picture taking)

  • My nursery is 9x9 so I feel your pain. We got storage bins for under the crib, used a medicine cabinet on the wall over the dresser for more storage and for our changing station (packed full of diapers, butt paste, toiletries for the baby, etc), put a wall of shelves for storage, and installed built ins into our closet for extra storage. It took a lot of work and creativity but we now have tons of room in a very small space. Suck it up and invest in some Spackle in the future, you need your wall space now. Good luck!

I would attach pictures but since the bump decided that it owns everything that you post, I will unfortunately be keeping them private. I would suggest Pinterest though, it is where we found our inspiration.

  • Our room is 10x10. We have a crib against one wall and dresser/change table against the opposite wall. In the corner by the crib we have a glider and ottoman and then a night table next to it for me to use. Diaper genie on the floor next to the dresser and then a tall skinny 6 shelf bookshelf in the corner. Bottom shelf had a bin with toys and then next 3 shelves has books. Youngest to oldest going up. Top two shelves have stuffed animals and picture frames where pictures of baby will go.

We tried a few bookshelves before finding one that worked in our room. Finally decided that the skinny taller shelves work best.

I would post a pic but as PP said I don't want the bump to own a picture of my house. :)
  • Take storage baskets or bins and hang them on the wall.
  • Shelves with cloth bins?

Our nursery is a little smaller than 8x8. I got my handy hb to put in a shelf in the closet as a change table, and have an algot cart from ikea underneath for clothes and essentials which is beside a bin for wet diapers. Hanging storage on both the door of the room and the closet. We installed a shelf for a lamp/books and some hooks for receiving blankets and a laundry hamper which allows for MUCH more floor space. Ultimately the only things on the ground are the crib with storage underneath, the rocking chair and a small side table for my water and phone.
We may need to get a dresser at some point but for now the algot cart works just fine!!
Basically if anything was not functional and necessary it was gone
  • maybe find a small bookcase for next to your glider one that the top can double as a table for you. I have a 2 cubby shelf from closetmaid that we are using. the 2 cubbies can hold books, while the top will be used for things i want within reach when BF.
  • If possible I also highly recommend an over the door storage, either the ones with lots of pockets or shelves ( bed bath and beyond has the shelf kind). both hold lots of littler baby things while being able to hide the clutter.
