Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Snacks for nine month old?

Our pediatrician wants us to scale down the formula (he is drinking 32 ounces a day on top of theee meals) and move towards a three meals/2 snack a day routine. But i am having a hard time thinking of snacks to feed him. Do i do more puree/mashed food? All i have on my list rigt now is yogurt. He has not master bringing food from his hand to mouth yet, so I want something I can help feed him/he can learn to feed himself. Any suggestions?

  • Any type of food in bite size pieces- Try cuts up pieces of bananas first- they are easy for babies to chew! Check out the website wholesome food. Com (I think) they have lots of suggestions

Wholesomebabyfood.com does have great advice and tips for food ideas! I give my son baby yogurt for snack as well as breakfast. Buy plain and mix with pureed fruits. Mix fruit yogurt is an option but watch out for the sugars and give in moderation. Another idea for snack is baby mum mum rice crackers. I only seen these crackers sold in wholefoods only and comes in variety of flavors like banana and veggies. Try amazon.com. Also try, super soft cooked diced fruits like fruit salad for baby to practice self eating. Bake mini muffins like zuccini muffins or banana muffins...subsitute sugars with plain apple sauce, yogurt, or omit it.

Babies that age can eat anything you do except honey.

We do fruit of all kinds, yogurt, crackers, veggies, cheese, hummus. Really anything you would eat they can too.

And the food does NOT need to be super soft.

Jackie71183, you know your baby better than anyone else. You call the shots on what to feed your baby. I merely offer suggestions on what I give my son. I don't give my son everything I eat cause I wouldnt serve fajitas drizzled with shiracha nor give him a steak dinner with frites. Just use good judgement and what is BEST for your baby assuming he/she has no food allergies. My son at 10 1/2 months barley showing a bottom tooth to bite. He is learning to gnaw at food bits therefore super soft foods helps him gum it easier and swallow. Every baby is different. Ask you mama friends or baby group to offer some good ideas on snack.
  • My daughter is a little younger, but my older one used to enjoyed avocado and cheese cubes. And  frozen grapes for teething

Kids don't need teeth to eat real food. You don't use front teeth for chewing anyway. You could absolutely serve your baby steak. Mine loves it. This is obviously up to each particular parent but I hate seeing misinformation (such as my kid can only have soft foods because no teeth).

SMH! You missed the point...by the way I did not say that a baby NEED teeth to chew nor NEED only to eat super soft foods. What post are you reading? Anyways, Jackie, some babies can't handle firmer foods yet therefore can choke easily like my son. So if you want, start with softer foods first until you are confident that your baby can swallow firmer foods. Parent knows best what their baby can handle. Yes Jackie it is your choice what you feed your child for snack. Take advice with a grain of salt especially online information. What works for one parent may not be best for another. See you on the next topic. Good luck mamas!
  • We do puffs, cheerios, blueberries cut up, bananas cut up, peas, cheese, yogurt, canned fruit like peaches and pears cut up, cut up noodles, and we just did rotisserie chicken from Costco tonight and she loved it.  She loves to feed herself so it does make it easier, but you can just put on a spoon like baby food.  Good luck!
