so off the charts (what the pediatrician says) when did everyone first start rice cereal?

Re: Rice cereal

  • It is not recommended until baby is 4 months old. A baby's digestive system is not ready for anything but breast milk and formula until then.

  • With my first child, the pediatrician recommended 6 months. I didn't start till 7 months. Will do the same with this baby. I'd rather not risk screwing up their digestive system. Unless your child's pediatrician recommends differently, I'd follow instructions.

I know a lot of moms that had there baby at the same time as me and there pediatrician started rice cereal as soon as they were born. So it must be safe. I just think sometimes as long as it's not gonna hurt your baby ( which it won't that's just what they recommend) then moms have to make there own decisions some times. But thanks for the input! Ps my pediatrician recommended 3 months. So that just tells me that it's a matter of opinion with pediatricians.
  • With my first child I waited until around 6 months. I never put cereal in her bottles. But spoon feeding the cereal went okay. With this baby, she won't be getting rice cereal. When she starts eating solids, she's going to start off with veggies then move into fruit. There really isn't a huge need for rice cereal. But like said, it doesn't harm your baby. So I would go with what your pediatrician says. :)
  • Never? My 4 year old started at 6 months with real food- avocado, banana, sweet potato, etc. Rice cereal is not necessary or beneficial as a first food, IMO, and there is not much research to support recommending it.

I already started it with her because she wasn't getting satisfied enough with just formula. She is doing great with it. And I only started it a few weeks before the recommended time. I wouldn't have started it if it would harm her. But again thanks for all the input! :)
  • I started all my kids on the rice cereal at 3 months then baby food at 4. But at first i would mix it in with thier formula and put it in a bottle.
  • Tried it at 4 months with my first after the doctor gave the ok, but in a bowl mixed with formula and he hated it. I only ever mixed in a bottle with formula per doctors recommendation to thicken it up and try to help his reflux. We tried cereal again at 6 months when we started solids because I mixed it with his food.

This baby I will probably try at 4 months or when the doctor gives the okay, definitely not any earlier.
  • I never gave rice cereal to my first and won't this time around either. My doctor told me that babies have a higher risk of developing eczema and food allergies if you start them on the rice cereal too early. Nutritionally speaking it doesn't really do much for them. Breast milk has the right ratio of nutrients and fluid that they need. It isn't dangerous to give them cereal early but it may not be the best idea in the long run.

  • I gave my baby rice cereal at 4 weeks it won't hurt them my pedi said not to give them it to early cause it will cause obesity my baby has bad reflux and that's why he wanted me to give it to him it makes the bottle thicker and it slows him down with his feeding he does great it also makes it longer between feeding but it won't hurt your baby to give it to him sooner I have heard of people coming home from the hospital and giving there baby it and then be fine it's all up to the mommy #goodluck
