DD came home from daycare today with diarrhea and throwing up. I thought that I had read on here to feed them the BRAT diet when they are sick. Can someone explain? Also, should I give her milk or just juice and pedialyte? Milk when you are sick seems gross to me, but I didn't know. TIA!!

DD -- 5YO
DS -- 3YO
Ugh. We're going through it too as of last night. DD threw up 12x from 7:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. I even joined her once, just for good measure.
Between the pedi I talked to 2x last night and the nurse at her pedi's office this morning, here were the suggestions. Pedialyte or Gatorade (just not red) 2 hrs. after the last vomiting, starting with 1 tsp., then increasing by 1 tsp. per hour. Bland diet (BRAT diet for example, especially if she has diarrhea), such as toast, applesauce, Jello, etc. NO dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, ANYTHING) and clear fluids only to drink. Obviously limit their intake until the vomitting stops.
DD last threw up about 2:00 a.m. this morning, but all she has eaten today is a few Cheerios, oyster crackers, some Jello, a bite or two of toast, and a bite or two of applesauce. She's had water and we're still doing Gatorade. The nurse said to watch for at least 1 wet diaper every 12 hrs. The main risk is dehydration; the Pedialyte or Gatorade helps with that, as does water if she'll keep it down.
