Baby Shower success/Pet Question (pic)

Our baby shower was a huge success!
It was a lot of planning and work, but well worth it.
Our two dogs were great hosts, hopefully they will do equally well with the baby.

Any experience with introducing dogs to babies? I have none and am just a bit nervous about it.

  • FTM so I don't have any actual experience in this, but when I worked for veterinary offices they would often reference articles like this one for pointers. Also, don't hesitate to contact your vets office - your vet I'm sure has discussed this very situation many times before, and can tailor recommendations based on your specific pets and their personalities.

Best wished for the furbabies and skin babies to get along swimmingly!

  • We have two labs. When we brought our daughter home, we made sure to get in the floor with the baby and let the dogs smell her etc so they would get used to her. We monitored them around her for the first few months and then they just got into a rhythm with her. It was really a non event. Our older dog avoids her like the plague and the younger dog is her BFF now.

  • I don't have personal experience, but the nurse at a class I took to prep for child birth suggested a couple things.

First, set up the bouncer/swing, etc ahead of time for the pets to get used to and sniff. That way when baby comes and is using that stuff they already did most of their exploring.

Second, after birth and before you come home with baby, have someone take something your baby was wearing (like a hospital hat) and toss it in the middle of the floor. Then the pets can explore/sniff and start to become familiar with the new scent.
  • that makes sense. Thanks!

  • With DD, the nurses at the hospital asked if there were any pets at home and when we said dog they gave my parents (who were watching him) DD's first little hat that she wore so they could take it home and he could get used to the scent.  Like PP said, just getting the dogs "used" to having another member of the family and the new furniture, etc.  is what worked out for us
  • Aw what sweet dogs! We have a golden who has a build-a-bear. It's her favorite thing and she treats it like her baby and won't rip it up like other toys. Every few years we get her a new one because it just starts to fall apart. Anyway, we decided the baby is getting her the next one! I ordered it, it's in the closet waiting to go with us to the hospital. We're going to get it close to him and smelling like him, and then my husbands going to bring it home so she gets a nice surprise and can get used to his smell. We love this dog so much and it's so important that she be a "big sister dog" and not feel left out. Maybe something special for your dogs that smells like baby would be a way to make them feel closer to baby. Good luck!
