Funny I was just telling my coworker how I'm having withdrawals..my midwife stated it was fine to drink..only one cup of coffee a day though. I still wont drink daily though cant get passed not knowing how much it will affect my baby boo!
But Hey I do miss my Café Bustelo !!!!!!!!!!!!! :-(
my doctor ok'd two cups a day, but I do try to go easy on it. I have a cup in the morning if I really need it, like on early school mornings (which are twice a week this semester). sometimes I have tea instead of coffee... I actually read recently that the miscarriage risks of coffee were ONLY associated with coffee, not tea and soda. so I wonder if it's something else about coffee, not the caffeine. anyway I like my chai, and it's a nice thing to look forward to on those "I can't believe I'm up this early" mornings
@beansideirae Coffee aversion during the 1st trimester is linked to lower miscarriage risk, and thus women who have an aversion to coffee and thus don't drink it during the 1st trimester are less likely to have a miscarriage, but this may be related to the aversion itself rather than the coffee. So, women who do not have aversions to coffee have been shown to have higher miscarriage risks, and, due to the lack of aversion, are also more likely to drink coffee. So, rather than the coffee itself being the culprit, the third variable of coffee aversion likely effects both the coffee a woman drinks and her risk of having a miscarriage.
coffee aversion = less coffee drunk + lower miscarriage rate
no coffee aversion = more coffee drunk + higher miscarriage rate
BUT it could also be:
coffee aversion = lower miscarriage rate
no coffee aversion = higher miscarriage rate
(and this link has been shown in multiple studies)
Some days I feel like I need a little caffeine pick me up but today was the first day I gave in to it. And I feel awful so I guess I'll continue to pass up the coffee until baby is here!
I've stayed away from it only because I've always been very sensitive to caffeine so I try to keep it to a minimum anyway. One cup and my heart is pounding and if I happen to drink it three days in a row on day 4 I have a headache if I go without. My mother and husband also have strong reactions to caffeine, so I figured baby may have inherited that as well. I know it's silly, but I hate the thought of her spazzing out in my womb because I needed a pick me up. I just can't bring myself to have the occasional cup, even though I know they say a cup a day is fine.
I drink some every now and then. I have never really been able to tolerate a lot of caffeine anyway, so we buy Maxwell House because they make a version that has half the caffeine already. I get my coffee and a little caffeine without feeling too guilty!
I drink one cup a day, two on the days I can't take a nap. Most recommendations are 200 mg a day or less. Biggest time to worry about your consumption of caffeine is in the first 12 weeks due to possibility of miscarriage. After that, you don't have much to worry about. There have been some studies that suggest that as long as you drink less than you did before you were pregnant, you will be fine. It's all about what your body is used to. Why deprive yourself if you don't have to?
In Paris no, because the coffee is stronger over there and tea hits the spot just fine. Now I'm visiting family in NY and simply CANNOT say no to Dunkin' Donuts coffee, so I do a half-decaf/half flavored while I'm here.
@rosiestadj I feel reassured! I wasn't sure if the coffee I've been drinking was okay...(clearly I'm a FTM and everything freaks me out!) Thanks for your comment. : )

I hope you have a great time in NY!! Enjoy Dunkin' Donuts :-)

Thanks! I'm loving being home with my family. Pregnancy has made me so homesick that I'm enjoying every second I am here, even if it is binge watching Lifetime Movie Network to kill time before going to my grandparents for pasta! I'm in heaven. : )
Had a huge aversion to it in the beginning of my first trimester. Working in an infant classroom in a day care, added onto the raging headaches, and total exhaustion, I caved. I'd rather have a cup of coffee than pop tylenol everyday. My doctor said two cups of coffee is totally fine but to stay far away from diet coke/coke/Pepsi/etc for the caffeine kick.

You're doctor told you you're not aloud to have soda?? May I ask why?
@shaunnarose Diet soda has artificial sweeteners, which many women like to avoid during pregnancy (and even when not pregnant!). Saccharin, for example, is a carcinogenic and has been shown to cause birth defects in rats.
@jenboston22 ohhhh gotcha! Yeah, I never drank diet soda even before pregnancy because of the aspartame in it! I totally agree. I got confused when I read your post I thought you meant no REGULAR soda either, per your doctor. I have a regular coke every now and then so I was concerned I was missing something. Lol.
I didn't have coffee for my first trimester bc it sounded horrible but I have a cup in the morning ever since and my vitals are always great at checkups
I'm from Costa Rica we drink coffee like crazy. I don't drink coffee all day just a cup in the morning n sometimes one in the evening. I ask my ob n she said it was fine so I'm OK with it... I drank it with my other pregncies n my babies were fine thank god... everybody have their own believes just do whatever makes u happy
I used to be a Starbucks Barista in a former life, and because of this I have a huuuge addiction to coffee. Prior to pregnancy I was drinking large cups of coffee multiple times a day a la Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. I have also watched many a pregnant barista go through the debate of coffee addiction with their state.
Now that it's my turn, I have managed to cut back, but the days I go without are some of my most difficult. I limit to a small cup (12oz.) with plenty of room for ton of cream....that way I get some dairy in my diet too. The actual ratio ends up being 8oz of coffe, 3-4 oz. milk. I also make that my ONLY cup for the day, but boy do I look forward to it.
I attempted to cut out all coffee for a week in my first trimester, but the added withdrawal headache made the whole run of a difficult first trimester all the worse. Now that things have evened out, I have been playing around with the idea of making my daily cup 1/2 calf and going from there.
I am so envious of girls who can just quit. It's been a battle.
