Swelling?

Anyone else experiencing a lot of swelling? It's only on my left side but by the end of the day my ankle/foot/toes are unrecognizable. My MD gave me a good explanation as to why it's just my left and he says its normal but I NEVER would have predicted this much swelling could be one of the many joys of pregnancy!

Re: Swelling?

  • Yup. Swelling is worse on my left leg, but I still swell on the right, too. It sounds odd to me that it's only on one side for you, but your doc would certainly know better than me! :) im trying to elevate my legs, reduce sodium, and massage them when I can. Good luck!

Some swelling, but not like what you are describing. Hope it goes down fairly quickly after you get to put your feet up!

  • Is it because of dehydration? My ob said when its one sided thats usually the culprit.
  • Yep my right foot and left hand swell much more than their counterparts and oh my goodness its bad i cant wear shoes comfortably. My OB tested me for pre clampsia but when my numbers were perfectly healthy she just said 'well... This is what your body does and try to stay comfortable' given i work full time on my feet its hard to keep the swelling down
  • Yup. Swelling started this week. I was told to sit down with my feet up as much as possible. My hands and ankles are the worst. Good times!

  • I just got back from shoe shopping at Nordstrom and it was so embarrassing due to my huge, swollen feet! The sales guy clearly didn't know what to do with me. Saw my doctor yesterday, though, and she said it's unfortunately very normal. So like was said previously, all you can do is stay hydrated, cut out excess sodium, and keep feet elevated when possible...
  • Yes!!!my feet are killing me ! And swollen by the end of the day .
  • I don't know about anyone else but it's so hard to cut out sodium! .... I drink 3L of water per day but the things I eat throughout the day are all salty...... I need help w this!

Yeah, ditto.  DH keeps telling me to cut sodium, but he only says it when I come home after a 12 hour day and complain of swollen ankles. Drives me freaking crazy!!  I don't salt my food, he does the cooking, all three meals/day are fresh food, not packaged... I just don't know or pay enough attention to where my sodium could be coming from.
  • Agreed. Swelling is terrible! I'm trying to look on the bright side as this is my only symptom at the moment. I'm sure more "fun" is to follow!
  • I've been swelling since about week 26, so at this point it's just part of pregnancy for me. A mom at work recommended compression socks and after I checked worth my doc, they have been a godsend. They look a bit strange, but much more comfortable than huge swollen club feet. Also, lots of water like everyone else has suggested.
  • Yep, I'm in the same boat. Swelling started about 2 weeks ago and it's definitely more on the left side. As others mentioned, my doc said it's part of pregnancy and to keep drinking water.
  • I have major swelling too but in both legs. My doctor said it is normal, as long as the swelling goes down in 20 mins after elevating your legs and drinking water. Mine does not go down after 20 so she had me get compression socks, which have helped! I only wear them at night because they are so so hot! I live in Florida and in this weather, it is not good to wear all day!!!!!

My hands have experienced swelling along with my feet/ankles. I've actually stopped wearing my wedding ring because it was so tight on my finger and hard to take off =/
  • I've been wearing compression socks for the past 8 weeks, but the cankles are coming. by the end of the day they are pretty swollen and uncomfortable. I keep them elevated as much as possible, but yeah it suck.

Still able to get my rings on and off, but don't know if they will makeit to the end. less than 6 weeks to go!

  • So much swelling! But I've actually heard mixed opinions about whether cutting back on salt during pregnancy will help or is needed.
My old ankles have made an occasional appearance, but I havent been able to connect it with anything I have/haven't been doing, which means I can't keep doing whatever it is that helps :(
