MATERNIT21

Because of my age I was given the choice between two tests to check for chromosomal abnormalities. One test is the amniocentesis and the other is the MATERNIT21. I chose the MATERNIT21 because all they had to do was take my blood. It's safer and newer and the results they can get back are unbelievable... they can even determine the gender! We should hear back in about a week! I can't believe with all the technology you can find out the sex of the baby so early! That's just a bonus to the test. Obviously I'm only having this type of test because I'm 37, not to find out the sex, I have no prob waiting for that, but it's a bonus!

Has anyone else had this test?

Re: MATERNIT21

  • I had it last pregnancy and I'm having one done today:) it's exciting to know the sex early. And I am so glad it's not invasive or I would never have it done myself. I like to have it done so I make sure I go to the best hospital for delivery if we have any special circumstances.

  • I had it this week as I'm 35, I'm still waiting for results. Just remember though that it's not diagnostic, it will only tell you your probable risk of something. An amnio is the only way to know for sure. That said, I'm thinking that if my Maternit21 comes back low risk, then I'll skip the amnio.
  • Good luck ladies :-)

  • How early can this test be done? Just out of curiosity. I already had PGD testing on my LO to rule out chromosome issues.

  • I was told the MaterniT21 could be done starting at 10 weeks.

  • Yes I had mine done at 10w3d but I did hear that if you leave it a bit later, say 11 or 12 weeks, then you have more chance they'll be able to read the data and less chance of having to redo the test. I preferred to do mine as soon as possible though to get it out the way!
  • Good luck ladies :-)

    Thanks :)
  • I'm going for mine this morning. I qualify not because of my age but because of 2 mcs and the last one genetic testing was done during the d and c. So the results allowed me to qualify.

I had mine on Tuesday and I was also 10 weeks and 3 days :-)

  • I'm having mine Monday. I qualify because I am 35yrs.
  • I'm thinking I will probably do it too. It was offered because of age. I've never done the screening with previous pregnancies because of the high incidence of false "positives" but it looks like this is a new test with very good sensitivity and specificity.

I don't know if I want to find out the sex that early, though. There's just something about seeing the ultrasound in front of you and the technician saying "it's a ____!"
  • This sounds like a test that I will be having in a few weeks (I'll be around 12 weeks), but it's called Verify, but I'm Canadian, so maybe the name differs. I am 32, but my first baby had Down's and I lost her at 22 weeks, so this is how I qualified. The gender portion is not really to test for gender, but to see if the baby has a regular amount of xx or xy chromosomes. Babies that have extra x or y chromosomes can have fertility issues when grown or learning disabilities, or heart problems. It is remarkable what they can tell so early into the pregnancy. I was not planning to find out the gender, so I might just tell them to only let me know something in regards to that if there are extra x's or y's.
  • I just went in today for my Panorama test - pretty much the same thing. I am 10 wks 2ds and 35 years old- that proverbial magic number!!! Now, I am just trying not to freak out and worry about the results. So far, all of my other tests (initial blood work and not a carrier of CF or SMA) came back normal, so I am hoping to continue the streak. The bonus is finding out what it is early, so I'll just focus on that. Good luck and good vibes sent your way, ladies!  *hugs*
  • I am 34 but they offered this to me because I will have just turned 35 when I deliver. i will be having this done at 12 weeks, so next week.
  • Congratulations! I'm still waiting for mine, I had it done last week on Monday but no news so far. How did you receive the results?

I haven't received my results yet, but the genetic counselor told me she would call me with the results.

Thanks :-)  I received a call from my Dr. office.

  • I plan to have it done either at my RE (appointment is Monday for that) or my OBGYN. From what I've read, we need to talk to a genetic counselor first to understand the risks and limitations with our situation and the test, but that part wasn't offered at my RE's office. I would actually be the first to have the test there since they just started offering it. If my regular doc wants me to have it with him, then I'll just cancel my appointment for Monday at the RE. I see him Friday so I'll know more then.

From what I understand, the test is somewhat limited when carrying multiples, which I am. It can test for the trisomy disorders, but can't test for the disorders of the X/Y chromosomes b/c of two fetuses DNA floating around. That also means it cannot tell us the sex of the babies - only if at least one is a boy.

I guess I'll find out more on Friday and go from there.

  • I got mine done last week. I'm only 31, but my doc is now doing it pretty routinely for anyone who wants it. I was told I'd get the results tomorrow! Hoping to avoid having to do an amnio if I can.

Thanks! Nope, we are team green!
  • I just tried calling my insurance company (UHC) to see if they will cover the test, since at least one of my doctors wants me to have it. They can't find any information on it at all to tell me if it's covered. She's never heard of it or the different brands/companies that do it or anything. I just wasted 20 minutes of my life and have no more information than when I started. Ugh

Did you call it a cell-free DNA test or first trimester screening? Did you let her know it's a blood test (sometimes insurance has blanket coverage for imaging and labs, as mine does). Also you may want to find out what lab your doctor bills the test from, and get that information to the insurance, as that may be helpful.
  • I chose to do the harmony test. I'm 23 but since my husband doesn't know his family history our insurance covered it. I just got my results back today and it's a girl!
  • I just called materniti21- to discuss ins coverage, rep told me that if you have a medical reason for the test, then there is a maximum fee of service for the patient of $200, then whatever your ins charges you, if they do. I also tried to talk my way into the results... No luck.

  • I am not close to 35 and I had the test at 10 weeks and 3 days. None of the abnormalities they test for were found and I am having a girl :)

  • I'm 25 but materniti21 is mandatory at my dr's office.. Strange, maybe? My husband's 39 and I'm antsy to find out the gender and to make sure everything's okay anyway.
  • Is this test geared only towards high-risk pregnancy? I will be 29 when I give birth, so I'm not old enough to qualify. I would like to know more about qualifications for this test. I'm looking online, but a lot of the information is 3-4 years old.
