Because of my age I was given the choice between two tests to check for chromosomal abnormalities. One test is the amniocentesis and the other is the MATERNIT21. I chose the MATERNIT21 because all they had to do was take my blood. It's safer and newer and the results they can get back are unbelievable... they can even determine the gender! We should hear back in about a week! I can't believe with all the technology you can find out the sex of the baby so early! That's just a bonus to the test. Obviously I'm only having this type of test because I'm 37, not to find out the sex, I have no prob waiting for that, but it's a bonus!
Has anyone else had this test?
Re: MATERNIT21
I don't know if I want to find out the sex that early, though. There's just something about seeing the ultrasound in front of you and the technician saying "it's a ____!"
I plan to have it done either at my RE (appointment is Monday for that) or my OBGYN. From what I've read, we need to talk to a genetic counselor first to understand the risks and limitations with our situation and the test, but that part wasn't offered at my RE's office. I would actually be the first to have the test there since they just started offering it. If my regular doc wants me to have it with him, then I'll just cancel my appointment for Monday at the RE. I see him Friday so I'll know more then.
From what I understand, the test is somewhat limited when carrying multiples, which I am. It can test for the trisomy disorders, but can't test for the disorders of the X/Y chromosomes b/c of two fetuses DNA floating around. That also means it cannot tell us the sex of the babies - only if at least one is a boy.
I guess I'll find out more on Friday and go from there.
