Caffeine

I really haven't had much caffeine with pregnancy besides Tea every now and then and occasionally coffee (if I get coffee I try to get decaffeinated, because I like the taste). I was at work today and kinda had a craving for a soda, which I don't drink often either, but it was a cherry coke, so I was just wondering is it really bad to drink many sodas, I only drink 1 in a blue moon.

Re: Caffeine

  • Occasional caffiene isn't a problem usually. I was personally advised zero caffiene (which includes chocolate and cocoa butter on my skin) at 24 weeks due to a minor heart complication that could potentially be caused by caffiene. But that complication went away and they just advised me to continue no caffiene just to be safe. Otherwise, my midwife sees nothing wrong with the occasional soda or coffee.

  • The main risk of caffeine is in the first trimester when it increases the risk of miscarriage. At this point, you should be fine with small/occasional doses of caffeine.

  • @LadyBlood was the heart problem for you or your baby. Ok, I just felt guilty drinking the soda, so I just quit halfway drinking it. Once I started drinking the Cherry Coke I felt the baby kicking or moving excessively, so I stopped, do you think that is normal?

  • You are fine. Enjoy your soda.

It's recommended that pregnant women stay below 200mg of caffeine per day. Your soda likely has 20 or 30mgs - nothing to worry about.
  • I drink a can of Pepsi every day.
  • I also had decaffeinated coffee this morning....@bean8213...

Which, added to the soda, is still well below the caffeine "limit".

I would be more concerned about the chemicals used to decaffeinate the coffee than the caffeine.
  • I ready a study that shows no increased risk to the fetus if you keep your caffeine consumption to 200mg or less. I personally drink coffee daily, I just make sure I know how much is in whatever I'm drinking. (For example Starbucks' caffeine content info is all online.)
  • I have a diet Coke every day and sometimes a coffee too.

The occasional soda isn't going to hurt you. However, I would be worried if you were drinking a Red Bull or a Monster everyday.

My midwife told me not to feel guilty about my diet Coke habit so I just drink it happily. :)

It was for baby. I was born with a heart murmur so they did an echo cardiogram on the babies heart to check for any complications, at 24 weeks they found he had PAC (partial atrial contractions) so they told me it could just be because his heart is still developing but it can also be caused by caffiene and told me no caffiene and they'd continue to monitor it since it usually fixes itself. So when I went back the following week there were no longer signs of any heart complications. They just recommended I continued to avoid caffiene just in case that was the cause.
  • I wouldn't worry much about it, or at all. Caffeine is fine in limitations. My OB actually told me to reintroduce it into my routine after I originally gave it up to help out with my headaches during the second trimester.
  • Girl you're fine!!!! Enjoy.
  • Babies can 'wake up' with the sugar/cold of the drink too.  When I went for my anatomy scan, lo was doing barrel rolls the whole time and the tech asked me if I'd had any soda, or juice, or caffeine.  I was like, 'nope, just water, and just my kid!'.  She was likely just enjoying the cherry Coke.
  • I couldn't have made it through any of my pregnancies without a coffee every day after the first trimester. I can't stand the smell when I have morning sickness, but as soon as it's gone, my coffee machine is my best friend again. 200mg a day is perfectly safe during pregnancy.
  • I usually drink a can of diet dr pepper every other day and everything has been fine, so I say go ahead and indulge in that craving!

  • I was getting horrid migraines my first trimester from trying to go cold turkey. It was either have a cup or two of coffee or pop Tylenol and my doc said stick with the caffeine it's safer.
  • I'm an elementary school teacher and there is no hope w/o a cup of coffee every morning. I used to have at least three a day, but when I found out I was preggo I went to one. I just make it last longer though the morning. I've been fine and my doc doesn't have a problem with it.
  • I've had a small cup of coffee nearly everyday this entire pregnancy. My dr also advised to just keep daily caffeine under 200-300mg. This morning at a coffee shop I ordered a medium latte and the girl goes, "do you want decaf because you're pregnant?" Uhhhh no did I ask for decaf b*tch?! I don't know why it rubbed me so wrong!!! Like do I have to really explain my drink and health choices to a stranger????? That is like a waitress suggesting a diet soda because someone is overweight. Am I overreacting? Lol

No you weren't overreacting it's none of her business... Ppl are just uneducated about things and think they know what's best for you bc of what they've heard. I've done everything I was supposed to do during my pregnancy including staying away from sushi, soda(sugar) etc... The other day I was craving tuna (light) which is ok in moderation, (dr told me 12oz or less/wk) and my MIL keeps going on about how my dr is wrong and I can't eat ANY fish etc. and tells me I'm going to hurt the baby. DH and I have had two stillbirths, this is the furthest I've ever been in pregnancy and my baby girl is fine. It really pissed me off that she'd say that shit. So no you def. did not overreact. Being pregnant is hard enough without everyone trying to tell you what you can and can't do... Like bitch im eating a sandwich, not smoking crack. Relax.

That happened to me at Starbucks! I ordered a latte and the guy asked me if I'd like it decaf. Ummm, no!
  • My ob told me that I could have caffine but not to go overboard. He said no more than 200 mg a day.

I've had caffinated coffee everyday and occasional soda.. honestly it's the sugar that is bad bc drinks pack a lot of it and we suck them down so fast. But rule of thumb (according to my doctor & google) is under 300mg of caffeine a day is the limit. (Most sodas have 32mg.... and a cup of coffee about 50. So you'd have to drink a lot, everyday, for it to have negative effect.)
  • I've continued with my regular caffeine intake throughout all 3 of my pregnancies. I'm under the 200mg limit no pregnant, so I never changed my habits.
