Sequoia Hospital Redwood City

Does anybody have any recent experiences with Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City? Maybe in the last year or so? I am a FTM and found that most of the recent Yelp reviews on Sequoia L&D have been awful, with many complaints about quality of care. Community comments from 2009-2013 were mostly positive, so I am trying to understand if something has changed.

I am seriously considering switching to Mills-Peninsula or Stanford even though we have had a great experience with our OB who only delivers at Sequoia.

  • Hi, well thanks for raising that question.. I was considering going there until just now. I know two people working there and I had not heard anything bad... What kind of reviews have you seen ?

  • Hi, I just gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Sequoia. I had a great birth experience there. The nurses were all very caring and responsive. There were a few issues with the continuity of care when the nurses shift changed. I reported this when I got a follow up call from the hospital asking about our experience. Also, since they are under construction they move you after delivery to a different room. I highly recommend Sequioa if you are going for a natural unmedicated birth:) plus our doctor was amazing
  • Thank you for the feedback :) I decided to go there after meeting with my OB
  • Hello again! I just wanted to follow-up and allay any fears I may have caused others looking at this thread... The negative reviews I saw were mostly on Yelp with complaints about nurses in training, questionable record keeping, etc. You can find these with a quick internet search. I've since talked to several new mothers who delivered at Sequoia and have been fully convinced that there is nothing to worry about. I've heard primarily positive things about a supportive nursing staff that is generally experienced and kind.

We also took Sequoia's Childbirth Preparation class, and our session was led by a longtime Sequoia L&D nurse. Since the entire class was planning on delivering at Sequoia, our instructor was able to go into detail about the practices there. I was surprised to learn that their standard practices align pretty well with what my husband and I personally want. They encourage multiple positions and walking / showering during labor as long as the mother is mobile, immediate skin-to-skin for at least the first hour (assuming vaginal delivery), breastfeeding if the family desires it, etc.

Hope this helps, and I'm sorry if I scared anybody with my original post! :)
  • Thanks for correcting this post ! I actually asked my ob directly and she was pretty surprised, they had no idea they had bad reviews on yelp :) I will be delivering there !
