Irritable uterus

So I was diagnosed with an irritable uterus (meaning I'm having contractions 24/7 without dialating) Friday after a week or hell, including multiple doctor visits, a trip to L&D, a shot to stop contractions, an fetal MRI and other tests. Has anyone ever had this before? My doctor put me on bedrest and tried to explain it to me. I also consulted Dr. Google and that was no help. Can annoying shine some light on how you dealt with it, did you end up going into preterm labor (I know there is a higher risk) if so when?

Re: Irritable uterus

  • I have also been diagnosed with an irritable uterus so I feel your pain (literally). I have to limit activity a lot because pretty much everything sends me into painful contractions for hours. It helps to drink water and lay on my left side for a while. Caffeine makes it worse. My doctor said to just listen to my body and not overdo it or the contractions can become productive. He said I could very well go full term you just never know. Just take it easy and make sure you call your dr if the contractions become regular or you leak fluid or anything.

  • I had it with my son. Pretty much every time I would stand up for more than 10 minutes I would have contractions. My midwife put me on modified bed rest at 35 weeks and my son was born at 38+1. Just drank water and tried to stay off my feet the most I could. Nothing else I could really do about it.
  • It just sucks so much because I had to basically move in with my parents since I have a 11month old son, and I can't even pick him up or bend over. I miss being with my hubby every night, his job is 15 mins from our home and about 45 from here, which isn't bad but he works crazy hours.

Was is worse for you ladies at night too? At night I feel like in dying!
  • I have been diagnosed with the same thing. My contractions started at 29 weeks were I was given two steroids shots and magnesium to stop the contractons. I have officially been pulled out of work as of yesterday at 31 wks and 4days. It sucks but I know it's only to protect the baby.
  • Yep, been there with previous two pregnancies and am there again. It is HORRIBLE. With all, it began around 28 weeks and continued until the end. I wound up on bed rest with one, not with the other, and have been told it may come down to that this go 'round. I'm going to be checked tomorrow for dilation. Previously, I went 40 weeks regardless.

With an irritable uterus, it seems the contractions don't actually progress into pre-term labor... I've been wondering (and will ask dr tomorrow) if there is any sense to bed rest other than mama comfort. Meaning-- does this ever cause baby to come early?

It's horrendous at night and during the day if I stand...all it takes is standing for about 10 minutes and I'm done. So sorry to hear that you all are going through this, too!!! No advice, but plenty of empathy.

  • I'm glad to know that I'm not alone. With my case my cervix was between 2 and 3 cm last week. And this week it's between 1.75 and 2. Yet I haven't dilated.
  • I had an irritable uterus with DD 1 & 2. Never dilated, and was induced at 41 weeks with both. I just tried to take it easy, rest & drink lots of water. It was miserable for sure. Good luck.
  • I was diagnosed at 16 weeks, pretty early in my pregnancy and I have been having regular contractions ever since. At first they kept sending me for ultrasound every 2 to 4 weeks to check my cervix but my cervix always remain at 3 cm and I did not dialate (which was great because I was so worried it would cause me to go into early labor). My Dr said that some women are just unlucky and feel every contraction and have a sensitive uterus but in many cases baby will do fine and you can have a full term birth.

All that to say I am now 33 weeks and now contracting every 10 minutes and although my cervix is now thining and baby is head down my Dr is confident I'll make it to at least 36 weeks. I have to say (I may sound crazy) but although it is the most uncomfortable and annoying pregnancy symptom, I have gotten so used to it that I actually get nervous if my contractions stop or slow down. I also find it is good training for the birth, I can at least say that I somewhat know what to expect.

Lol, yeah if I weren't having a Planned c-section this would be great. The best part of a planned c-section is no labor lol
  • Haha that is very true! Wishing you a happy delivery and healthy baby :) before you know it you be holding your LO in your arms!
