After having major food aversions, raw salmon sushi seems to be the only thing I want. I've heard mixed opinions on whether this is ok... What have you all heard?
I've heard mixed info too. Some say that if its a reputable place that you've eaten at often that you should be ok others say to stay away for 9 months. obviously there is always a risk when eating sushi but it's up to you if you want to take it.
My favorite are raw salmon rolls and raw salmon nigiri....I have started eating cooked rolls with like shrimp....or veggie rolls with avocado and imitation crab. It has dulled my craving. I haven't been to my first appointment yet so I have been able to talk to my doctor about what he things about sushi.
Now, I ate sushi through my entire first pregnancy cause I was living in Japan and it is normal there. However, I am not eating it this time in the states cause while it is about trusting the handling of the fish it is also about how close you are to the source. We lived close to a constant supply of fresh fish and here we are land locked.
The answer from any doctor I've ever asked or any friend that I've ever known that's been pregnant (all of them almost) is that it's an absolute no when you are pregnant. That being said, there are a lot of reasons why you absolutely should not eat sushi while you are pregnant. My family was in the food business for many generations on both sides, and the fact remains that no matter how careful they are with the fish and no matter what the quality of the place that you were eating, you can get parasites or other illnesses from eating raw or undercooked foods. Specifically fish. Of course, you should do what your doctor tells you to do and what you feel is best. But to answer your question, no.
I ate a couple of tuna rolls towards my last trimester last time from very high-quality places and it was fine. You have to trust the place. With that said, I'm staying away from raw in the 1st trimester. I did eat cooked rolls throughout last pregnancy and for the past few weeks too.
