October 2015 Moms

Has anyone started make baby purchases?

I'm curious as to when everyone will start buying baby items? Have you started buying anything yet?

I'm planning on just really focusing on essentials and hopefully not going too overboard. I really want to make some of the bigger buys now since I've seen some deals however my mom keeps telling me I should wait til the 3rd trimester. She's pretty traditional. At this moment I have no reason to think something will go wrong since all tests have been perfect but I realize anything can go wrong at any time.

I'm 15 weeks tomorrow, would it be weird to start buying baby things in the next few weeks?

Re: Has anyone started make baby purchases?

  • My husband and I have been looking out for used cribs on craigslist, and would definitely buy something now if we saw something we liked. I've been buying cute onesies whenever I see them. I probably won't buy most things until closer to the end, but I don't think it's weird to buy stuff now.

  • I have a few things from my son , I stated looking but not buying . As soon as I know the sex I will go out and buy things lol.
  • We've gotten a few things.  We have a crib and most bigger items from DD, but we have bought the infant car seat and extra base (DD's expired), and we got an awesome deal on a travel swing a couple weeks ago, but other than that, we haven't bought much.  I have built up a pretty great stash of newborn size cloth diapers too.  I used cloth for DD, but didn't start until she was older, so didn't have any newborn sizes, so I've been slowly buying them since we've been ttc (took 33 months to get pregnant though, so that's why my stash is quite large haha).
  • I've only bought a onesie. I miscarried in October so I was afraid to do anything. Now that I'm 12 weeks, I am feeling really confident in this pregnancy. However, we will wait on the big ticket items until after our baby shower. We've just been putting lots of money into savings so that we can purchase whatever we don't get after the shower(s).  We have however been doing lots of home projects to get ready for baby. We have to clear our our guest room for the nursery. I've been using that room as my personal closet so we bought a closet system for our master to help accommodate all of my stuff.

  • So far we've only bought a playpen because Target went out of business here and it was a really good deal! Not buying anything else until I feel well enough to clear out the baby's room ;)
  • I just panicked wondering where the heck to put all the stuff from the spare room... Haha
  • I am 15 weeks and have started buying a few bigger items. Carseat, stroller and playyard. I am waiting to buy most things until we find out the sex of the baby..i am a blue/pink mommy. :)
  • I was 9weeks when we bought our crib/swing/bassinet/bouncer/bath. We even made a registry at 10 weeks and set up the nursery at 11wks. Even though we had a miscarriage in November, we are just way to excited
  • Since this is number 2 we really don't need too much other than another car seat and a few small things. We probably will wait to see what we are having first before we start buying. That way we can budget money towards building a boy wardrobe if we need to. We already have a girl so if it's another girl we really won't need much at all, but if it's a boy there will be more things we need.

    Anniversary
  • Thanks for all the responses! I've had an early miscarriage last year and up until recently have been so worried about doing anything baby related because I was worried I would jinx it. However, I've realized that unfortunately bad things can happen at any point even during delivery. My doctor keeps telling me that I can't keep spending my whole pregnancy waiting for something bad to happen and I need to just enjoy it!

I have a 20% coupon that expires next week and I really want to use it on the stroller. I think I will go ahead and buy the stroller and just leave it in the box with the receipt until I'm much further along just in case.
  • @KittenMittens8 If you are using a 20% coupon for Bed Bath & Beyond/Buy Buy Baby they will take them even after they have expired. I have a ton of them and plan to use them all for baby purchases!

That's awesome! Yeah that's the one I have!. That's really good to know. How long after they expire?
  • We bought a few small things and a pack n play last week. Also been to a few community garage sales in nice communities. Got a great baby monitor, baby carrier for the chest, diaper bag, some halo sleep sacks and some onesie at the garage sales for like $60! Not a fan of garage sales but it's great for baby stuff since mostl of it doesn't get use for too long.
  • We've bought the carrier, travel system, swing and bouncer already and have received some really cute gender neutral blankets, towels, burp cloths, etc. We only buy if it's a good deal or on sale. :) Can't wait to buy gender specific stuff though, one more week and we can!

I've just picked up a couple of onesies so far. We're having twins and these are our first, we're going to need so much stuff! I've been too sick to even go grocery shopping, let alone baby shopping!
  • @KittenMittens8 I have used them up to 3 months after expiration. Also, even though it says limit one per purchase; If you have a stack of 5 you can use them all together (if you are buying 5 different items). They send so many in the mail, we never throw them out. If you google it you will see lots of threads about it. I can't find an official coupon policy but it seems to be the norm that they will not turn down their own store coupons even if they are expired.

  • Isn't anyone waiting until after the shower? Pretty sure the grandparents will pick up a lot of the big ticket items for us so I'm not buying anything. I will make a very good registry tho lol.
  • I've only bought one thing -- a GORGEOUS crib! I knew that I wanted a certain type of crib and when I saw this one was on major sale at a small, local boutique, I jumped at it! It's already set up in the room and I'm in love!
  • I feel a little weird buying big things even though I'm 16 weeks lol hubby wants to buy a crib this weekend and go shopping since we found out a few d as us ago that we are having a boy. He's so excited! I think that will be the only big thin we buy for now and wait until after the shower for everything else.
  • I've bought a couple of cute onesies and a pair of converse for our "family of 5" poster for the family but that's all.  I'm procrastinating hard on buying stuff.  lol  But the hubs is insisting we buy out carseat at the end of the month so that we have that out of the way.

  • After my first ultrasound I went and bought two layette sets. The second ultrasound showed twins so I waited until I was 12 weeks to buy anything else except the bedding I wanted since it was discontinued.

My husband didn't want to wait till the last minute to get the furniture and I had a coupon so we bought the cribs and mattresses last week.

I won't buy anything else until I find out the gender. It's hard as everything is so dang cute!!!
  • I bought souvenir bib from Portland, ME last week for baby (DH is from Maine) and a Dr. Seuss book  ("In Utero") My mom just text me today that she bought baby a book on Colors and a bilingual animal book!
  • We have been getting a ton of hand me downs: Ergo carrier, Moby wrap, crib, co-sleeper, play mat, cloth diapers, and pack 'n' play. Also tons of newborn and 0/3 months clothing. I bought a BOB stroller off craigslist at an incredible price. I've also been buying some clothes if they are cute and on sale. We will likely wait to buy anything else until our shower in late July. We may have everything we need before then!

  • Since we're going to buy the bigger things in neutral colors anyway we'll probably start shopping soon. I'm 14 weeks now and don't plan on registering for any of those bigger things. We'll start buying other things for baby after we confirm its a girl (or get really surprised with a boy) at the end of May. If you see a great deal on something you plan on buying later anyways I say go for it!
  • Since i am not having a shower i have been buying things a few small items a couple unisex outfits a bassinet mil gave us a highchair and a carseat (we have an odd size backseat so we wanted to make sure it fit and we liked it early in case we had to do more research) i am 14w 1d and so far everything has been perfect there is such a small chance for something to happen now that we didnt see the point in waiting since we have to buy everything ourselves (the not having a shower thing is due to a screwed up family situation) and we have so many things going on through the end of the pregnancy that i want to get what we need (the basics) by the end of the second trimester. I would say that it is all personal preference and comfort at this point. if you are planning on having a shower i would wait for some of the stuff maybe start looking into doing registries. We are waiting for the majority of the cloths until we find out the sex though.
  • I bought a cute sheep stuffed animal because 2015 is the year of the ram :) I've made a killer spreadsheet of all the crap I do need to buy though, almost $2k :(
  • I'm 12 weeks and 2 day and today we mad made our first purchase we brought the cutest fleece baby grow (because it will be cold here in October) and the whole johnsons toiletry range. Start when ever you feel comfortable too x
  • I can't bring myself to buy anything, but I have started pricing out things. My mom bought me a rocking chair though.
  • We don't need much since this is baby #2 and the same gender. My IL's offered to pay for a crib mattress (my first's was a hand me down and needed to be tossed). I bought an adorable sweater one piece on clearance at Target and a sleeper that says little sister the week we found out that baby is a girl. She'll get all the accents from DD #1 nursery. DD #1 had coral and purple, DD #2 will have mint and purple.

  • I bought a cute beige baby blanket and a neutral thanksgiving and Christmas onsie on clearance. People have also given me hand me downs in both genders.
  • We just bought a mamaroo chair, a couple of gender neutral onesies, wipes, blankets and now I'm starting my stash of cloth diapers! So excited I love buying a few things for our little one! Next week we'll be looking at cribs!
  • I haven't bought anything yet but I have started looking at cribs, strollers, and car seats. But As soon as I find what I want. we have no problem buying it now. I think I am going to wait until after my showers to buy the other stuff unless it's nursery decor.
  • We already have the crib from my son ! And we have some other small things from my son, but we're also waiting until we find out the gender on May 16th to start shopping ! With my son I had everything bough and ready at 6 months, all gender neutral stuff, we kept our first a surprise (; !
  • I am part of a facebook group which only includes members from my county and a few surrounding counties. The purpose of the group is for people to sell new or gently used baby and children's items. I have purchased a gently used swing and car seat each for only $40...retail for both would've been well over $200. I absolutely love shopping for baby items but I'm not going to be purchasing anything else until after my shower.
  • We are going to start buying the big ticket items soon, like crib, stroller, and car seat.
Does anyone know if you can use regular Bed Bath and Beyond coupons at Buy Buy Baby??
    Thanks in advance
  • I bought a double stroller at a yard sale about a month ago lol I'll try to wait to buy anything else I just couldn't pass up that deal . Thinking of buying a nursing bra or two as my regular bras are not fitting anymore
  • We bought a bassinet and bouncer from hubby's coworker. Have been gifted a few outfits and bought a few unisex things. Yesterday my hubby wanted to go shopping and we ended up buying me a super comfy glider and ottoman and a recliner for him (he's wanted a new one for months and took into account sitting with baby in it.) Most big things were going to buy ourselves ( crib, stroller, car seat, etc) because we like to do research and look into safety on things and feel like family members will buy whatever they can get a deal on. Will ask for other things on registry.
  • Yes you can. Even if they are expired.
  • We have a good friend who has 2 under 3 and has decided to gift us most of her stuff as the kiddos grow out of it. So far, an infant car seat and extra base (brand new, her son needed a special one), a crib and mattress, a bath, and bouncy seat.
  • I'm holding off on most things till after our baby shower. We live in a small one bedroom apartment right now so are really sticking to essentials.
