December 2015 Moms

My dog must know I'm pregnant.

Disclaimer: My chiweenie is a little princess and is my fur baby through and through.

Usually she is terrified of everything...me getting off the couch, the sound of paper moving, the tv turning off, would all normally send her running to her crate. But for the past couple weeks she has been following me around EVERYWHERE, is being super cuddly, and is insisting on sitting on/licking my belly.

Anyone else's dog seem to have a sixth sense about this?

  • Yes my Max boy has been extra protective of me at the dog park and extra snugly at night. So sweet.

My dachshund has been more snuggly, more cautious and definitely more protective. :)
  • Dogs are so smart. I'm hoping my dog's protectiveness of me now doesn't turn aggressive once the baby is born. I've read horror stories about dogs attacking family members when they try to hold the baby....:(

  • My dogs have also been extra cuddly. Babytuck15 my cousins German Shephard got extremely protective of her during her pregnancy and is now weird about people coming into the house around the baby. Most the time they have to put him into the back yard when guests are around. I also fear that that will happen with my dogs. Maybe make sure you're bringing everyone that will be around your baby later around the house now.

  • I did read an article about getting your dog ready for baby because I also worry that my dog will go the other way and be aggressive with the new arrival. So hopefully that will help. @charlielm27- good idea about making sure she gets used to having people around. We just moved a couple states away from our parents, though.

  • My zeus is more attached to me now. He used to follow my husband around.
  • I don't have a dog but I when I was prego with my first my mother in laws cat always came and sat on my lap and purred loads on my belly, i know cats have a sixth sense with pregnancy, it's strange but sweet at the same time, and I hate cats lol
  • @twointow83- that's a precious story!

I love hearing about all these cuddle-buggy dogs. :)

  • We are having problems with ours. She likely knows and is craving extra attention.
  • Speaking of which, here's my little guy snuggling the belly. Don't mind my comfy clothes lol.
  • I kind of have an opposite story. My gig is 8 and has always been attached to me. He literally has slept in bed with me/us for 7 years. In fact before my husband and I were married he thought he could train him to stop sleeping with us. It did not work and we conceded and bought a bigger bed! Lately he'll snuggle with me for 10-15 at bedtime, quietly sneak off to his dog bed! We don't know what to make of it, but we'll take it!
  • *dog, not gig
  • Our little boxer now follows me around constantly. She used to just like knowing where I was. Now wherever I am, she has to be. Almost stepped on her getting out of the bath as she quietly settles herself down on the bath mat. Has to lie all over me on the couch.
  • Such cute fur babies!

  • Ahh my dog has been sniffing my tummy and putting her paw on me all night!
  • @lmamymarie- Your dog looks kind of like mine! Unfortunately mine is camera shy so every time I get out my phone she hides her face.

  • My dog has been acting the same way. She is always near me and likes to rest with her head on my stomach.
  • Both of my dogs snuggle me at night more than ever before. I definitely think they have picked up on my pregnancy. Sweet little things!
  • I feel like my cat (a big boy cat) seems to know. Normally he is not an attention needy kitty, he wants his pets when we come home and then he's over it....lately though? he is literally my little shadow and follows me everywhere! It's so cute, and he wants so much more love than usual, I don't think it's coincedence.
  • My dog was actually a factor in me taking a pregnancy test!! He was just sitting and barking at me constantly! He has calmed down a bit since but still will sit and bark at me.

When my ds was born and people came to visit and see the new baby we had everyone give my dog a small treat or play with a dog right away before they saw the baby. That way my dog felt as if people were coming to see him!

    That's a great idea!

  • My dachshund has been sleeping up against my tummy every night and I'm only 5 weeks and 4 days along. Our German Shepherd has been following me around non stop also.
  • My Bo is a 100lb 1 year old bullmastiff, who has decided that he wants to be my personal lap dog. Usually he would come up and put his front paws and head in my lap so I'd pet him and then would leave after a minute. Now it starts out with that and slowly moves to 3, then all 4 legs if I'm not solely focused on him.

He's actually the reason I tested, he hadn't had an accident (no.2) in the house since we got him at 12 weeks. This past week he has taken to doing his business in the middle of the dining room if I leave without him or DH for more than 10 minutes. This is a dog who will refuse to go outside for 12 hours while I'm home and who goes out immediately before I leave so it's not a medical problem.
  • Yes! My Bailey can't stand being apart from me. When I leave the house, he cries and shakes the whole time. When I'm home, he has to be right by my feet at all times.
  • Here's my little Bailey!
  • Keep in mind that if you see significant behavioural changes in pets to talk to your vet. Not all pet pregnancy reactions are positive! My poor SIL's cats took to peeing on her bed everyday while she was pregnant, something about the hormones stressed them out. She put up with it through her entire first pregnancy, but the vet gave them meds to calm them down for her second one. I couldn't believe she lived with that through her entire first pregnancy!

My cats are acting normally, although one does seem to be a little more cuddly than usual but she's always been my suck!

  • No peeing on the bed yet from my little dog...thank goodness! Right now it's all cuddles and kisses.

  • Omg my little girl has been doing that. I have been going crazy over it. She comes up and just pees next to me. I have noticed they are more clingy though. My males wants nothing to do with me at the dog park but now is like upset when another dog is coming up.

I don't know if any of yall are dealing with this but my dogs are smaller and they are walking all over my breast and stomach. My breast are killing me as it is and I don't want them to get in a habit when my belly grows. ANY TIPS?
  • Here is my little stinkers from the other day :)
  • With my first pregnancy my boxer got out of control protective. He would run to our neighbors yard and get aggressive with that boxer (never hurt him just would bark at him) and I would get upset so I basically only had my husband let him out because I was so scared he was going to hurt the other dog. Anyways we got him fixed (he was 1 1/2 years old and I was about 4 months pregnant) it calmed down a little and he would finally stay in our yard. Now he's just protective of his yard and will just run towards the neighbors dog to get him out of the year (still scares me to death tho). The day I found out I was pregnant this time (ah i don't even wanna say this ) we were at work (I'm a dog groomer) and my bosses dog was with us and they were fine just playing and the we went to the training area for class and I was having him sit and stuff and my boss let her dog in the training area as well and she just calmly walked up to him and the just turned and he bit her :( I still to this day feel so awful. Oscar is seriously like my child. So now we pretty much keep him home. I let him run at my sisters horse farm and he loves it. Sucks because he was never like this before my kids. But he's amazing with my daughter :) and I'm still obsessed with him. Just thought I'd share my story so maybe it'll help someone :)
  • Changing the topic a bit because I don't have a dog, but have a cat! Usually when we go to bed the cat sleeps at our feet, but recently he's been sleeping directly on my belly or snuggling up to it whenever he wants to cuddle lol I feel like he has to know something is up!

Must be all kinds of pets that can sense it! I wonder if they can smell the hormone change or something?

I bought a body pillow today because I haven't been sleeping well and I took a nap with it. I woke up to my dog burrowing her way between me and the pillow so she could sleep next to my belly. :x

  • We have two dogs a wiener dog and a shepherd. I can't tell with the wiener dog if he knows, he's old and don't care much about anything. The shepherd on the other hand use to jump up on the bed every night with his front paws and give me a hug good night before he would go to bed each night then he'd sleep on my side of the bed. Since we found out we are pregnant he no longer "needs" hugs goodnight and I've found him sleeping on my husbands side or anywhere but my side... He's kind of hurt my feelings. I wish he would snuggle like everyone else's pets.
  • @jwilliams0620 I have a small (still heavy) boxer and a dalmatian who like to walk all over me in bed to wake me up and on the couch when they want a pat. They get told in a very stern voice by both me and my husband to get off, and I'll push them off. But they get big pats and positive reinforcement when they settle down beside me nice and calm. This seems to be working so far.
  • I am going to try that @stickybun.

Today has been definately trying our boy dog has got out 2 times in the last 24 hours. He was out for two hours today. He would see me and just go the other way. He has never ever done that before. I always could walk him back. I was so fed up I said screw it if he wanted to run away by all means do it. I had to lie and say lets go to the dog park before he would finally run to the car to get in. We are really not going to be able to keep tracking him down every time he runs off. :( We had company coming over. I waited till they left and was asleep I feel like before the door even shut becuase I was so wore out from chasing him.

  • Yes! My little maltese terrier mix loves to bounce on me when I'm laying on the couch. When I see her bouncing towards me, I cover my boobs with my arms. Lol! She doesn't know any better so I try not to yell at her, but I might have to if she doesn't stop.
  • Yes! Our youngest chihuahua sits on my partners belly and follows her around. Dogs are amazing
  • I am totally with you on that! Both of my dogs are following and next to me all the time. I even had my golden laying right next to the bath tub- I couldn't get out!! Not sure if they know I am pregnant or just that I am not feeling 100 %.
  • Yes! My two pugs are my babies and although they have always been extremely affectionate they seem to be covering my belly when they sleep, which is weird because typically they sleep between my legs or close to my face! I just hope that being so close to my belly their snoring will sooth the baby =)
