Baby Names

Please help! Why are baby boy names so hard?

Ok so we are having a really hard time picking a boys name. We have narrowed it down to a few but I am being so indecisive!

I am white(as is the donor) and my partner is Hispanic but is very pale skinned. We like the name Alejandro but would that be weird if our child looks very white? Our last name is concatenated similar to Stevens-Rodriguez( Not real names but you get the idea) so a Hispanic sounding name wouldn't be totally mismatched with the last name.

Or we could name him Alexander. I am sure parts of the family will still call him Alejandro but he could go by Alex or Xander( I like this one) in school. This of course is not helping my indecisiveness. Will we call him Alejandro, Alex, Xander?

Other names we like:

Jasper

Emmet- love this name but our friends have a son named Emmet so we can't use it

Jackson(Jax) - its just too popular

Elliot

Austin

Dean

Also need a middle name. We are thinking one of the above names in combination as first and middle or using Edward(it has a special meaning for us although I am not sure how it sounds with some of the other names and I don't like it as a first name). We also like Dax for a middle name.

Please help! What are your thoughts on any of these names?

Thank you for your time :)

  • I love the name Alejandro. In your situation I wouldn't hesitate to use it and I love it with Edward . Dean Edward is also very awesome.

Jackson is way too trendy and Emmett is on that train.

I like Elliott but not with Edward.

I like Jasper but not as much as Alejandro or Dean.

Austin is not even in the same ballpark.

  • I teach in a 70% hispanic school, and I assure you that "Alejandro"s come in every color you can imagine haha. I have a lot of students who have the Spanish version of the name as their legal name, but their friends at school call them the Anglicized name, including an Alejandro who goes by Alex. In Spanish the nn is Alejo. I wouldn't worry too much about the nn because it will happen pretty naturally.

I think Alejandro Edward is a nice, interesting cultural mix and with much more meaning and personality than the other names on your list.
  • You could always use the name Alejandro but with a less Hispanic NN? Like Andy?

Despite the hyphenated last name, I think it would be somewhat odd to have a totally white child have a Hispanic first name. But definitely not a deal breaker.

    I really like Elliott.
  • Alejandro is gorgeous!!!

Other than that one i like Elliot, but Alejandro is much better.

  • Go with Alejandro - it's a nice way to incorporate your partner's heritage and a really nice name.
  • I live in Florida and I wouldn't think twice if I saw a "white" kid with a Hispanic first name. Hey, I knew a Cuban guy named Travis growing up. It's all a melting pot, right? Even if your donor is white, your son will be growing up in a Hispanic family! You could always go with Alexander Eduardo if you want to change up your plan a little bit. Alejandro Edward is also great.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • I think Alejandro would work even if the child is very pale. The child is half Hispanic after all.

I do have to say that with your last name being so long, I would not use Alejandro.

    How about Jasper Dean?

Other names to consider with such a last name would be:

    Juan
    Luis
    Joel
    Micah
    Eric
    Alex ( by itself)
    Victor
    Nolan
    Miles
    Logan
    Dylan
    Grant
  • We will have an Alexandra/Alejandra. We are also half and half. No problems - like PP said Latins come in all shades.
  • One of my favorite students was Alejandro (nn Alex). Family is light skinned and I think outsiders would probably see him and assume he's white. I have several students this year in the same boat. I never really gave it a second thought. Alejandro Edward sound nice.

I like Alejandro! I think it would be fine.
  • Thank you all for your replies. I also really like the name Xander as a nick name. Would it be weird to use that nickname for Alejandro?

    I don't like it

It's a stretch IMO and I don't care for it

I would start off with something simple like Alex, and if he grows into another nickname or decides to revamp his image when he turns 12 or something ;-) , then follow his lead or go with the flow and don't try to force it too much (especially with so many options). You'll probably get a better feeling for whether he's an Alex, a Xander or Alejo after you meet him :-)
  • Thank you everyone! I think this must be why the whole process takes 9+ months #-o
