Castor oil?

any thoughts or experiences on using castor oil to induce labour? When, ofc, baby is full term and ready to go in a doctor's opinion

  • ^^^ this exactly. I had a woman tell me "i took it and 8 hr later had A baby but its also a laxative so ur either going to have a really pleasant day or really bad one!" So yea u could end up with diarrhea and puking which can lead to dehydration which is not good for baby or an ideal way to go into labor. there are much more pleasant ways to induce labor
  • The only thing proven to help induce is nipple stimulation.
  • Couldn't pay me to drink it lol
  • NO NO NO I promise you

I did it for ds and dd once they were full term. I took 1 tablespoon (not the 4 you read about online!) and chased it with soda. I was in labor 4-6 hours later with each of them and had both within 24 hours. It did act as a mild laxative, but no more than really spicy food, Indian food, or colace. I probably pooped well (for the first time in months!) within 1-2 hours of taking it and then was done. Didn't poop while pushing ds. Did poop while pushing dd. But she was in a rush to escape and just elbowed those turds out of her way in transit. :)

Hahaha your story is too funny!

Do you plan on taking it again?! It just sounds too easy haha

I've seen it work for a number of people, however the people who, IME, have better luck using it seem to be second timers who are already past their due date. First timers are more likely to have it fizzle out, they tend to go into labor later anyway and like other methods like membrane stripping, if your body just isn't ready it isn't going to take.

I'll admit I tried it with my first son. It fizzled out the first try. Waited a few days, tried again. That one took, although it took a while for labor to really get going.

I'm less worried about avoiding induction this time, so not currently planning to try it again. I want to see what my body will due left to it's own.

  • This is an awful idea, it can cause the baby to have the maconium inside the womb. And there are zero proven facts that it works, if it has worked for anyone then they were already going into labor and this was a coincidence.

Exactly this. Why chance your baby eating poop and causing health problems?!?

For clarity, the risk from meconium to the baby isn't from swallowing it, it's from inhaling it.

  • I used Castor Oil for my first child.. I mixed 4 tsps with ginger ale and within an hour I started having contractions and was in full blown labor 3 hours after taking it. No complications for me and it didnt make me have to use the bathroom but everyone is different.

Don't babies "breathe" the amniotic fluid?

Maybe I have the wrong idea here. Call me an idiot if I am wrong lol
  • Just play with your nipples. It seems like a much more pleasant way to try and get things going ;)
  • Lmao!!!! That cracked me up!!
I bought a bottle but i'm not sure i'll use it.. Just keeping it there

I have a few moms tell me it worked for them one mom did it with all 3 her baby's and it worked each time for her! I been having period like cramps for two weeks and painful long contractions but nothing yet! I'm thinking of taking it next week if I have nothing going on yet!
  • Maybe? I don't know yet. I am having a much more painful pregnancy this time. I don't know what is different from my previous two, but something sure as hell is. So, given my discomfort, I might. Especially if baby stick around past my due date. I can't imagine having this amount of pain for another full month. But I labored so quickly with my daughter that I'm scared taking castor oil would speed up an already quick process. I do not want to deliver without an epidural, and they almost missed the window with dd.

And there is no rigorous scientific medical study that shows an increased risk of baby pooping in the womb with castor oil. The laxative molecule is too big to pass through the placenta. The danger is taking too much, giving yourself a raging case of the vomiting poops, and then becoming super dehydrated.

Right, they breathe it in and out and doing so actually helps their lungs mature and get stronger. They do also swallow the amniotic fluid, but there's no bacteria in the poop/fluid (yet), so there's nothing like e. coli present that would make them sick.

What can happen when they get the meconium in their lungs is that it's thicker than the regular fluid, and after they're born it can get clogged up and make it hard for them to get enough oxygen. It's called meconium aspiration syndrome. When a baby is born in a meconium delivery they'll get extra monitoring for the first day or two to make sure they aren't having trouble breathing.

  • Used it with my third pregnancy. I had the poops all day. No labor. Just regrets. Big $#!tty regrets. Lol
