Ultrasound says twins are different sizes

From the very begining my twins have measured different sizes during ultrasounds. Initially it was Baby B was a day younger than Baby A but in the latest scan at 18wks BabyB was measuring a week smaller. Due to have my morphology scan next week in which I hope things have evened out but I was wondering has anyone else experienced this and what was the largest difference anyone has experienced?

Re: Ultrasound says twins are different sizes

  • My twins were always different sizes. They are just over a month old & baby b is still a couple pounds smaller.
  • At 31 weeks, I had a 28% difference between the two. They are di/di and each measured ok individually, just not when compared to each other. My doctors increased the ultrasounds and monitoring and checked the umbilical cord blood flow. All seemed ok with both babies. I am being induced tomorrow at 34 weeks for unrelated reasons & hoping B has caught up a bit since we last measured!

  • I am 31 weeks and last week the girl weighed 2 lbs 13 oz and boy was 3 lbs 4 oz. they are sending me back to specialist for more growth measurements but I'm not worried because they are just guessing anyway. They base weight predictions off of babies' belly measurement which they can be off on. Don't worry!!!
  • Thanks ladies. My OB hasn't expressed any concern what so ever so far but they are already closely monitoring me because of a tear in my uterus so this might be why she hasn't mentioned it. Just has been playing on my mind a little and was wondering on the experiences of other people.
  • Our baby girl weighed 5 lbs at birth and our little boy was 6 lbs 13 ounces so almost 2 whole pounds more. And now at 18 months he's 5 pounds heavier than she is. It's pretty common if they aren't mono type twins. And if your dr is monitoring it than that's great.

  • Are they fraternal? If so, I wouldn't be worried unless the smaller baby is IUGR. DD weighed 5lbs and DS weighed 6lbs 9.4oz at my 36 week & 1 day delivery!
