Damn you, Justin Timberlake

So, our top two names for this baby are Miles and Silas. I really like both, but we've just been having a hard time committing. Well, Justin Timberlake just named his son Silas and I'm kind of worried the name might get really popular. I know my kid will never be the only one with his name, but I'd like to avoid a name that is extremely popular. I think I'm just scarred because my name became extremely popular after it was used on TV lol. There are still very few people my age with my name, but there are tons of little ones!

So what do you think, will Silas surge thanks to JT?

  • If you love it go for it, but it's undoubtedly going to gain popularity
  • I lol'd at the title =D> thanks!
  • I'm sure it will get popular but maybe not right away! I'm thinking more so when their baby is older and in tabloids. So I would just go for it if you really love it. :)
  • I think it will be more popular but seems unlikely that it would replace the favorites in the top 20. My daughters name is ranked very high on name lists for members at a baby name site but it is not actually chosen nearly as often. Name your baby something that makes you happy! If on the off chance Silas replaces Michael or William in the top 10 then at least you will know you were one of the first. :-)
  • I know how you feel.. We were DEAD SET on Harper, based off the freaking author--dh is an attorney and I went to school where Harper Lee was from--and turns out like EVERY celebrity has recently named their kid that and it's in the top 20 :( weh
  • Coming from an Ashley lol I love the name Silas too! It was my pick for a boy. If you love it then go for it, I don't think it'll get popular for a few years.

I love Silas! I never considered for my baby but have loved it since Weeds! don't you just hate it when you had your perfect name no one else had and wham! Someone uses it :{ happened to me! I've always wanted to name my little girl Holland after my grandfather, NEVER told anyone so they wouldn't steal it then bam, right before I found out I was prego an acquaintance of mine used it...So mad! I told her a few weeks ago that I wanted her to know if I named my baby that I PROMISE I wasn't "stealing"it but it was my beloved GDads name and I'd always wanted to use it!
  • Thanks for the insight, ladies! I'm just feeling torn. My husband said he heard on the radio this morning it's the #3 name this year! I don't know what they're basing that on since I highly doubt it's replacing some of the classics in the top spots. I heard a girl on the radio this morning saying there were 3 boys named Silas in her son's class, so maybe it's popular in my city expecially.

My name is Emma and I NEVER met other Emmas, that is until Rachel on Friends used it and it became the hotness.

  • @melewen I love Harper! With my first pregnancy it was the one girl name (though I know it's unisex) my husband qnd I both loved, now it's crazy popular! I still love it and it seems like it has significance for you both, but I obviously can understand the hesitation!
  • @riahanson love the name, especially with the significance for you! A friend of mine was considering that name and before that I had never heard it. That does always suck when someone uses the name you were planning on using.
  • @owlrighty haha you're welcome. I usually love me some JT, but he screwed me here!
  • I say go for it! I like Silas from Weeds too @riahanson! My boys' names, Noah and Liam, were #1 and #2, respectively, in 2013, so I guess we are trend-setters, lol! I have no clue what to name this little girl. Ironically, Sofia has always been high on our list.
  • I think Silas has been on the upswing in general, but if you use it soon you can beat the crowds.  It's a great name.  I would love to use it if my husband would ever agree to it.

I like the name! Use it if you want to. I know it sucks though. For DD1 I thought I had picked a middle range unique name, and I liked that she wouldn't have to be "Rowan P." in her class. But just a month after I had her a girl at work said she was naming her son Rowen, which is fine, but she kept saying "why would you pick that for your daughter, it's a boy name!" I was pissed. Then a girl found out she was expecting twins and wanted to name them Rowan and Roman, gah! My BFF spoke up and said like her daughter, and she said the same thing, that it was a boy name not a girl name!
If you love a name though, use it. We're the ones that get to say it all the time!!!

Gah! This is what scares me. I think it might even bother my DH more because he has a super common name and he was always one of 3 in his class.  :(
  • I would still use it but the popularity of a name doesn't bother me much.
  • I love Silas. It was my great grandfathers name. We talked about using it but decided against it. There is a Silas in my sons daycare class and one in kindergarten at the school I teach at. I feel like it was already on the rise and will gain even more popularity now.
  • My cousin named her little guy Sylus when he was born last year but he's the only one I personally know of. I think the name has started getting more popular within the last year so I think we'll see more and more of them whether JT used that name or not.
