Bleeding at 17 weeks 4 days......

Ever since I found out I am pregnant, even though the doctors said it was safe, I was a little afraid about sex. I can't explain it. My husband and I have been having sex, but very gentle and I knew he was not as pleased with it. So Sunday he asked about doggie style (sorry tmi). Afterwards there was bleeding. Bright red, period flow but not soaking through a pad. Terrified we went straight to the closest ER. They looked at our little girl and said she looks good but her head was down right by the cervix. They felt that it was possible my placenta is a little low and the sex could have made it bleed or I passed a clot. I am almost too afraid to ask if the bleeding could have come from the baby. Am I nuts? The bleeding stopped after an hour. Follow up with doctor on Tuesday showed nothing but a healthy baby and possibly a slightly lower placenta but the US tech said she wouldn't think it would have caused bleeding.... anyone else been through this and have had a healthy baby?

Re: Bleeding at 17 weeks 4 days......

  • I'm 15+6 and still spot (sometimes it is like a period) about once s week and sometimes it is bright red. My doctor and I talked about it yesterday and she said she sees no concerning reason for the spotting that it is probably my cervix. We agreed that I am not to worry unless it stays bright red for more than 1 trip to the bathroom or I start soaking a pad. Bleeding after sex is fairly common from what she said because our cervixs are more fragile and bleed more easily and that bleeding like what you described usually comes from a broken blood vessel and causes no problems with the pregnancy.

  • That makes me feel so much better. Thank you. It hadn't happened before this, this is the first time we tried what we did. I am glad the baby is healthy and so far everything else has been normal.

  • Given that the bleeding happened after a position with deeper penetration, my guess would be bleeding from the cervix, which does not hurt the baby at all. You might have a cervical polyp, or your cervix could just be tender from the natural state of more blood flow to that area during pregnancy. Try not to worry too much!
  • I had almost a similar situation. And actually I was 17w4d too. I bled after sex. Called my dr in the morning and they had me come in for roh gam (I'm rh-) and an ultrasound. They said the my placenta is low and partially over my cervix. Because of it I'm on pelvic rest. I have to get checked every 4 weeks until it moves. If the dr doesn't seem to worried try not to but maybe mention it to your regular OB.
  • I bled this week (17w2d) after having sex. It happens sometimes when we get a little carried away lol. My doctor says it's not hurting anything and it's just my cervix being more sensitive, so I've stopped worrying about it. It's when I used to bleed for no apparent reason that it freaked me out! Thankfully that hasn't happened in the second trimester so far

  • Thanks so much for your support! Doctor called yesterday and let me know she saw nothing abnormal in the ultrasound. Suggested pelvic rest for the time being but otherwise has no concerns. I try to stick with "if the doc isn't worried, I shouldn't be either" but it is hard sometimes! I go from zero to crying in an instant if I think anything is wrong with my little one!
