Increase milk supply

Hi Ladies! Anyone have tips for increasing your milk supply? My little one cries after breastfeeding so we started supplementing after the feedings but I would like to be able to increase my supply and eliminate the supplementing. I just started taking fenugreek too but are there other ways to make more milk? Thanks!!

Re: Increase milk supply

  • I've found I wasn't drinking enough water. Start keeping track of your water intake. I'm trying really hard to get to 120oz a day, but it's a struggle for me!

I also just started taking More Milk Plus by Motherlove , that seems to be doing wonders.

There are also foods you can eat to help. Here is a list I found. I'm sure you could google it too.

oatmeal, eggs, leafy greens, coconut oil, berries, almonds, fish, quinoa, fruit salad, avocado, yogurt, seeds

Plus there are recipes out there for lactation cookies that help bump up your supply.

Try nursing more often. Even if you're going to have to supplement, start off by trying nursing first. The more often you put baby to Breast the more you're body will start to bump up your supply.

  • I am going to echo what the previous poster said at the end.  When baby has a frustrating feed and seems to get angry, you will have more milk the next feedings, etc.  When you supplement, your body won't get the message to produce more.  I supplemented with my first and my production went way down.  This time, I trusted that the supply would increase and it has.  Definitely nurse more often.  Good luck!

  • Drink lots of water, eat lots of soup and "watery" foods. Nurse, nurse, nurse. ESPECIALLY during the night feedings. Your boobs know what to do, just keep nursing and they will supply!
  • Thank you so much for the tips and advice!!
  • @Tiana188 Good luck!  I know it can be frustrating when they seem unhappy at the breast.

  • Water water and more water! And nursing/pumping often seemed to help me
  • Everything that has been said is what I've been told. I've read that flaxseed and brewers yeast also help with milk supply... There are recipes for "booby bites" or milk cookies that incorporates these. I've also been adding my flaxseed meal into my yogurt. Best of luck!
  • You can have the best of both worlds, actually. Supplement your kid so you don't have to stress them with hunger, then make sure you pump as well. I had a very large baby who demanded much more than the colostrum I was making, so I supplemented from day one, but still established a good supply by pumping as well.

  • Water is key... Pump after each nursing session will also tell your body to produce more... I had a lactation consultant give me som 'go-lacta' that seemed to help... But I just got my order of Fennel oil (essential oil) that's supposed to work wonders... Still can't speak to that one.

  • Lots and lots of water. If you want an extra boost look for Mothers Tea in the tea section. That helped me out a lot. It's an organic tea that helps increase milk flow.
