OK... I have been seeing this "momzilla" thing way too much... I get that this is a super special time... but enough with the "this is all about me me me!"... My goodness from hospital birthing expectations (is a grandparent who wants to wait in the waiting room so terrible?!) to elite guest list showers (kids should be seen and not heard!) it just seems like some people feel the world owes then something for being pregnant! Don't forget our babies are being born into families who already love them and want to be a part of this (and they also have fathers with feelings too!)
This is another one that very well might stir up some controversy: I'm sick of hearing about how much better natural birth is than laboring with an epidural, other drugs, etc. Most of the ladies on here are pretty good about respectfully stating their opinions and what they hope to do, but I've seen some pretty arrogant Facebook posts - including some from close friends - about how natural birth is inherently "better." You want a natural birth? Awesome! But don't put other moms down if they're open to receiving drugs. And don't make c sections seem like they're the end of the world, because while they may not be most people's first choice, they ARE sometimes necessary. Every woman and every birth is different. We should be encouraging one another to make informed decisions that get our babies here safely and healthily, not wasting time bashing some methods and making women feel like they're making a bad choice if they decide to use one over the other.
ETA and FWIW I am actually going to attempt a natural birth - but if I want an epidural when the time comes, I'm not going to feel guilty about it!
@karaelaine1991 this opinion you have actually is popular to me lol because I agree with you. It gets annoying and overwhelming between here and Facebook with the natural vs. epidural crap!

Haha, maybe I'm not as much in the minority as I thought... but those "natural is the only way" people are so darn vocal that it makes me feel like I'm the only one who's not 100% on board!
My friend just completed a hypnobirthing course and she said it took "natural" to a whole new level. She said the tutor was seriously teaching them about aiming for an orgasmic birth and, ahem, "stimulation" being one of the best pain relievers. She said you can just ask the midwife to leave so that you can have some privacy and send DH down there! Let's hope for those of us who elect to give this a shot, that our waters don't break at an inopportune time and give DH a nasty shock
I actually really hate the "natural birth" vs using "med free". Because unless you gestated your child in a petri dish the entire time, all birth is natural, whether you go med free, with all the drugs, or need some other assistance to get everyone to the end safely. I feel it's almost demeaning to other moms.
I know I had another UO earlier this week, and I knew I should have written it down.... maybe it will pop back into my brain.
I'm gonna jump in on the momzilla thing. I love my children and love having them around. But I do get annoyed with other people's children. I don't like when I'm eating or doing whatever and you have someone's child climbing on me..I don't say anything I usually just treat them like I would my own, but in the back of my head I'm wondering why parents don't correct their children for other ppls personal space. ( I do have social anxiety maybe that's why idk) but I don't allow my children to go annoy other ppl like that.

I agree - I don't think there should be any distinction. Who cares? Who even remembers and continues to discuss it months/years later like it matters - er, no one.

Well teaching proper manners should be a social expectation and does not make you a momzilla!

Agreed! We all want healthy babies-- and your NOPE is different than my NOPE, but we all want the same thing in the end. I joke around that I started this pregnancy off on drugs (Phenergan, Zofran, Diclegis), that I might as well finish it off on drugs. I usually don't volunteer my birth plan/intentions because some people are so opinionated and judgmental about birthing methods. (Haha, see my "nope" comment above. Guilty.)
I can't with the whole 'eating the placenta/placenta encapsulation/placenta jerky/smoothie/shake' thing. NOPE. Why would I want to eat an organ that my own body created, of which one of the main functions is to filter out waste/toxins....I mean, isn't it kind of cannibalistic? I wouldn't eat my own kidney/liver. I don't even eat those parts of an animal. I don't think that there have been any scientific (key word) studies performed proving that it is beneficial to helping those suffering from PPD or helping out breast milk supply, or whatever some internet blogger claims it's magical effects are.
If you like it and are going to do it, good for you-spend that money, and make sure the person 'processing' your placenta does it in a sanitary way. I hope it will work out for you and do what you want it to do for you postpartum. But for me, sorry, I view it as medical waste as soon as I expel it from my body after birth-throw it away.

I was JUST about to include this myself! Seriously who makes placenta smoothies!? Maybe the pill form.... Maybe... But the people who want to just take it home with them and start frying it up.... OMG!

I felt the same way you did as a FTM. It gave me the hebe jeebies. I'm probably in the minority here, and I don't really care, but after suffering from PPD, I'm willing to try anything this time, including taking my placenta in capsul form. I could never stomach a smoothie or "steak"...that's just not for me.
As far as the feeling that it's cannibalistic, most other mammals eat their placenta and we don't chastise them, yet we drink a cows breast milk and don't bat an eye. Just food for thought. (Pun most definitely intended!)

I feel like the whole placenta eating thing is all placebo effect. I mean how many people are going to pay all that money to get it encapsulated or take it home and cook it up and be like "yep that did NOTHING!".

I honestly feel the same way about breast feeding. I feel like there is a ton of pressure to breast feed. I agree it's best, and I do hope to breast feed my little guy. That being said, if I can't for whatever reason, I don't feel like being raked over the coals. I have several friends who weren't able to breast feed, and we're made to feel super guilty by others. I just think women should be more supportive of each other than that. Everyone is just trying to do the best they can!
I hate it when people call their unborn or baby sons "little man." It sounds so creepy and trashy to me. I see it a lot on here and I don't mean it personally, but ick.

Also, I'm pretty sure the main reason animals eat their placentas is so that predators are less likely to realize that there are new (and vulnerable) offspring in the herd. It's obviously not harmful to do it, but I'm not convinced it's some godsend for postpartum ailments.

I can't speak for how others do it, but dehydration doesn't remove the nutrients. A friend of mine is certified in it so she will be putting it in capsule form for me so I'm pretty damn sure she won't be sneaking anything else in there. As far as cross contamination, you're probably more likely to have that happen to you tonight when you're cooking your own dinner. Most people who do the encapsulation process don't just wing it. There's a process to it to ensure it's safety. But apparently I'm the one with the UO here. If you don't want to eat it, don't. If you don't want to do a natural birth, don't. If you don't want the drugs, don't take them. Good golly people! We've got some passionate people on here today.

I think others are just sharing their thoughts on it... No one is telling you not to do it!
I'm just really tired of the vaccination vs not vaccinating topic. Please do your own research and make a choice that is right for you and your family. Stop trying to tell me what to do and make my choice for me! Good gravy this drives me nuts! Maybe this is annoying me so much today b/c it was the topic on Law & Order SVU last night :P

A good friend of mine did the smoothie thing for her third pregnancy this past September. She had also struggled with postpartum depression with her first two, to the point where she was willing to try anything. For her, it worked. I hope you have a similar experience with the capsules!
Now, me personally, I think it is, at least to some degree, a placebo effect... but, to each her own! I genuinely do wish you well with this, I hope you'll update us after the fact to let us know how it works out for you

Edited for grammatical errors! Lol
This is my NOPE. I am tired of anti-vaxxers, full stop. My father is immuno compromised from a bone marrow transplant, and our babies will also be vulnerable. You do not make a choice that is "right for you and your family." If you decide not to vaccinate, your "choice" affects my family, and all others. I have zero tolerance on this, and don't care who I offend. (It is killing me not to finish this with "Sorry" lol)

After experiencing PPD, low milk supply, anxiety, and delayed bonding with my DS, I would happily take even the placebo effect. For me, I'd rather have the option to take it vs wishing I hadn't thrown it into medical waste.
@ElRuby I'm all for people sharing their opinions, but I feel like it was turning into the same attitude of those who are tired of being guilted about having an epidural or formula feed. All I'm saying is to each their own. All I want is for all the mommas to be happy and not feel any more guilt than we already do/will have about our decisions. I was just looking at it from the perspective of someone who was on the fence about it. Being thought of as a cannibal (which technically is just eating fat and muscle of your own kind, not your placenta) might dissuade them from seeking out the (possible) benefits. That's all I was suggesting.
I don't know of that comment was meant for me @lovethatcolosun, but I never said someone was a cannibal for doing it..just it seemed cannibalistic. I never chastised anyone directly and just said if it works for those who do eat it then good, but it's not the choice for me.
I think twice weekly NSTs are a waste of time and I'm thinking about going AMA (against medical advice) and only coming in once a week until LO starts getting cramped in there and I'm not as confident about his movements/kick counts (probably around week 34, I am 29 weeks now). I mean, I work 9-5/M-F, how the heck am I supposed to just leave work for an hour or more for you to confirm LO's activity on a monitor that I feel consistently everyday? I'm a nurse for Pete's sake! Give me some credit here!
My UO is that it is harder for some women to work to their fullest abilities while pregnant. I used to be part of the "power through it until you deliver, champ!", but now that I'm going through the regular pregnancy issues at 30 weeks, and the challenges I've faced since 1st tri, I think preggo women should get short term disability of some kind! Haha
Ok, maybe we're not disabled, but damn, some weeks I really have felt that way.
Who else wants to throw in the towel and stop being a woman warrior champion?
A girl I know called my son her daughter's first boyfriend. Not sure if it was pregnancy hormones or what, but I wanted to punch her in the face. (Not literally). Yes we have children of opposite sexes, but don't try to hook our kids up! Can't little kids just be friends without moms calling it a bf/gf thing. I think it's gross.
The whole placenta eating thing is disgusting to me. I barely eat meat. I just couldn't do it. I'm not educated on it at all and have nothing against anyone who chooses to ingest their placenta. Animals do it. Different things float different peoples boats.
Re: Unpopular opinion (U/O) Thursday!
ETA and FWIW I am actually going to attempt a natural birth - but if I want an epidural when the time comes, I'm not going to feel guilty about it!
