Grama Crossed the Line

My Grandmother whom is known for being super critical crossed the line.. again. She asked me about names for our baby girl. I said I don't know yet (as in I dont want to discuss it with her) & the hubby hopped in with excitement and blurted out "We like Kinley!" Grama said that people would call her "Kinky" but do what we want. This happened weeks ago and the name has stuck, but so has the harsh words of her being called "Kinky". I don't know how she got that stretched in her mind but it's really bothering me. Any advise?

  • I wouldn't let it get to you. Unfortunately no matter what you name your kid they will get picked on for something or other so unless it's really bad, I wouldn't stress it. I was an assistant teacher for kindergarten before I moved and trust me, they was way more "out there" names. I taught everything from a Rocky to a Abcde (sounds like absidty). Hubby and I are thinking Violet for a girl and the first thing my dad said was that it sounds like violence.... You can't please everyone so pick a name you love, I think kinley is cute!

Someone did not do that to their child! Abcde! @AndieTessie I'll never feel bad about choosing a name again! =))
  • @bonniecouture yep! I struggled remembering how to pronounce it for a while but I'll never forget it now! Lol I might use that as my fake backup name when people say they don't like the one I picked, that will shut them up!!!
  • For what it's worth, I think Kinley is cute. And since my iphone didn't autocorrect it to kinky, I wouldn't pay her any mind! :)
  • My aunt said something similar to us during my last pregnancy with my now 1.5 year old son. It bothered me throughout the rest of the pregnancy...but once he was born and he became the person behind the name, it stopped bothering us because somehow, once he was in front of us and we got to know him, we really stopped believing that ANYONE would ever call him that. If you love the name (and I love Kinley too, we considered it before we knew we were having a boy again) stick with it, and when she is finally here, I'm betting you won't even think about it much, if ever again. Good luck!!

  • My cousins are teachers. They told me of a name recently La-a pronounced ladasha... I think kinley is sweet sounding good luck!
  • I like the name kinley, and would have never thought to call her kinky... just ignore her it's truly an adorable name.
  • I named my oldest daughter Adeline and a lot if people including my own mom made fun of it by saying "oh yea add-a-line for only 10.99" it was hurtful but I didn't let it sway my decision either way and now everyone has completely forgotten about it and won't dare say anything like that now. My mom has also made it know that the name we have chosen for this baby isn't cute for a boy but is okay for a girl (Charlie) and that will be their name with either sex. But again my baby my choice.

  • My little sister's name is Alexandra. My parents were very deliberate about her nickname being Lexi, not Alex or Alexa or anything like that. Well, inevitably, Lexi became Sexy, so she was Sexy Lexi at a time when it was totally taboo to be associated with -gasp- sex (think 8 to 12 years old). Lexi is a very normal, main stream name, and yet, it still got turned into something else. It's the way kids are. If you love Kinley, go with it. No one is going to tease her as she gets older, I would point out that kinky is not a word in most elementary age kids vocabularies, and honestly, kinky is a bit of a stretch for Kinley. The only similarities I personally see are the K and the Y...they don't even rhyme.
