Baby Names

Ziggy

We are not yet TTC again, but I am thinking ahead.  I love the name Ziggy for a boy.  My DH (and most other people in the world) loathe it.  DH is open to considering it as a NN, but I can't really figure out what a full name could be aside from Zigmund, which I don't care for.  Any ideas?

  • Ziggy can be a pet nickname you personally use for whatever his actual name is. Looking for a full name based of a nickname is silly not to mention Ziggy is a pretty bad nn to be searching or a longer version.

  • Sigh. I think of Ziggy Marley first, but you confirmed my suspicion that the rest of the world doesn't. It will probably end up a pet name after all.

  • Even Ziggy Marley's name isn't actually Ziggy. It's David; Ziggy is a pet NN his father gave him.
  • I think it is a really great dog name
  • I think it is a really great dog name

Lol I had a dog named sight and he was the worst terror ever
  • I think it's better left as a dog's name.
  • It's a no for me.
  • "Zig-gy playyyed guiiiiitaaarrr!!!!"

Sorry, first thought I had was Bowie. And I agree with @wassuphoes that a namesake like this would be too much.

I also agree that making up a name to fit a nickname is no go. Find a real name for your child and let any future nicknames happen organically. Save Ziggy for a pet.

Yes! Ziggy Stardust was the first thing that came to mind for me. Not that David Bowie isn't a cool namesake, buuuuut....

  • As much as I love David Bowie (and Lord knows, I love him more than some people in my family), I just can't get behind Ziggy as a name. I would pick something else and use it as a nickname.
  • Ziggy is definitely an animal name, not a human name.

  • Ziggy is also another name for zig zags ( you know the rolling papers)
  • One option would be stick with a more traditional Z name, like Zachary or Ezekiel, and then you could use Ziggy as a really informal term of endearment (like calling daugher Juno "June Bug").
  • I thought of ziggy Marley right off the bat, but I like the name. Here is the deal no matter what you name your kid everyone will associate it with something or someone. I just had a little boy and named him Stark. I knew from the get go that people would associate with iron man, but it didn't bother me so I named him Stark anyway.
  • Please do not do that to your child.
  • I wouldn't put Ziggy anywhere near the legit name. We call DD 2 Beanie. It happened from a few jumps down the nickname line. So it's possible something cute and fun will happen without taking away his option of a good name when he's old enough to care.

  • My first thought was Ziggy Ansah, star DE for the Detroit Lions. Then Ziggy (obnoxious twerp) from season 2 of The Wire.

To add: Ansah's real name is Ezekiel and the character from The Wire was actually named Chester so in both cases Ziggy is a nickname.
  • I had a pet fish growing up that I named Ziggy.  For a kid, though...nope.  It'd make a cute nn for a kiddo though, just don't make their teacher, bosses, and girlfriends call them that!

I've never heard that!  And, trust me, I had plenty of wayward years in high school and college.

I will keep in it mind as a pet name, but I don't think DH is going to buge on it regardless of how hard I push so it's out for now as a name or a driver for a name for a future baby.

I think Ezekiel seems like your most practical option, if you don't think you can get him to budge on the nn.

ETA: Just realized I misunderstood your last post. You could ninja the nickname in by using Ezekiel, though, since it doesn't lead to Ziggy so overtly.
