3rd Trimester

Intense exterior vaginal itching?

I'm 31 weeks and always feel that I'm on the verge of a yeast infection. Right now the itching is almost unbareable. Last apt doc said this is normal for this stage. Itching is mainly around clitoris and labia major (to get technical). The whole area seems swollen. I feel like I need meds or is there a natural remedy I'm missing out on??!!

Re: Intense exterior vaginal itching?

  • I had that a few times before I was pregnant. Was always a yeast infection!

  • I have this as well but no infection. I was informed that it is all the hormones going to that spot. I could literally itch all day. I have heard that using coconut oil helps.
  • I had that same thing a couple weeks ago.. including swelling down there. I had a yeast infection. I could seriously bet on it that you have one too.
Just go to labor and delivery and have them check it out and test it. Or call them instead of your doctor.

Natural remedy: kinda weird but cover your whole vag with plain yogurt. (obviously only do it if you'll be staying home.)
But I would have already been at the store buying 7-DAY monistat already if I were you.

And by the way, yeast infections do not do any harm to baby.
But I would for sure go get it tested just in case it's any other kind of infection. Pretty much every other infection could harm baby.

  • Skip l and d and call your doctors office. Sounds like an infection. Swelling is normal, excessive itching not so much.

I guess your labor and delivery is different than mine. They have a whole area for walk ins to get checked out about any problem you might have. They get you in and out and lots of OB doctors there to check you out immediately.

Still, labor and delivery is for that labor and delivery.....an itching crotch does not require a trip there......a call to the office and getting their advice is more logical....maybe even saving a large copay, as a trip to L&D and not being admitted can get expensive (depending on insurance coverage).

Maybe things work differently in other areas, IDK.

  • @smeame14,
Yeah, mine must be very different. Doctors offices close and have booked appointments so they recommend us to go to labor and delivery for anything. yes, including itching crotch.
Completely free to go to labor and delivery for me. But a doctor's visit is free for me as well. I guess I have good insurance.

Here in Mass they would be very frustrated with a simple doctor appointment problem showing up, after all they are at L&D to help deliveries and emergencies. Not a possible infection. Still would call doctor instead of going there even if they cover itchy issues, something that can wait for a call

I'm in San Diego, and have Kaiser. When you call the appointment line, they will ask you your symptoms and most likely send the phone call over to L&D and then those nurses there tell you to come in. The have little triage rooms for just that. I would hate to have to wait for an appointment with my doctor. Sounds inconvenient.

YES coconut oil!! (Used on affected area throughout day) Also, about 2 tbs apple cider vinegar/day. Diluted in a glass of water. this combo Has always worked like a charm for me. If i have yogurt, i usually eat it all up right away too..
