Butt rash

hi ladies. My son is one month old and has a pretty bad butt rash. The doc told us to use antifungal cream. We have been using it for a little over a week now and it hasn't really changed. We tried home remedies like the oatmeal bath soak and even putting some Breast milk on it. Anyone else have any advice. I am hoping when we go back to the doc on Tuesday that maybe there's a prescription or something that we can get. Thanks.

Re: Butt rash

  • If it's a fungal rash, you might have to stick with the ointment given along with air exposure. Think of it as an opportunity to do tummy time. Place a Towel underneath in case he soils and open the diaper to expose that cute little butt to air. Fungi love wet and warm, so maybe this could help.

  • I was going to suggest the same- air exposure. Your doctor may be able to give a stronger ointment or cream than the one you're using that is OTC. And it sometimes takes forever for those rashes to clear up, so just keep going.
  • We had a bad diaper rash the first week... We tried desitin, butt paste and honest company and nothing gave our baby relief! :( but I got a trial size of Eucrin Aquaphor and that cleared her right up. Maybe once you get this under control you can use the Eucrin as a preventative for future rash. Just an idea. Good luck and keep using the anti fungal cream. It might take it a while to kick in if its a bad fungal rash.

Let him air out. Take diaper off for awhile every day.
  • We had a bad rash the first week home tried Triple Paste diaper rash ointment, only helped a little. Doctor ended up ordered Bactroban ointment (antibiotic ointment) for what she called a mild skin infection but it cleared it right up. Triple paste worked great on the diaper rash portion but it's expensive.
  • How do you feel at the end of each period after having worn sanitary pads for days? Diapers, even the best ones, are made of similar, synthetic, air resistant material.

Give him a break from diapers for as long as you can. Allow his bum to get air.
I have started using cloth diapers now. I was willing to go through the hassle for his skin, but am amazed at how easy it is to manage the extra laundry. But I do have hired help. Still I would encourage you to try. I started with one cloth diaper for one night change, as they aren't. Cheap and I didn't want to waste if I didn't like
His rash went away but would come back when I would use pampers.
  • I agree with previous poster ... Consider cloth diapers too. We started cloth on Easter (cloth has always been a part of our plan) and our little guy's skin looks amazing from them. It has made a huge difference no ointments involved or anything. The laundry hasn't been bad either. We wash them ourselves and it is honestly just one extra load of washing a day.

  • OP how long do you wait between diaper changes? If he's hanging out for a while in wet diapers, that will definitely not help. I change diapers every 2 hours or whenever I see that it needs changing.
  • Air exposure , some sun exposure, and coconut oil always did the trick for us. That is until we discovered that my DD was allergic to eggs and getting a HORRIBLE rash from the eggs I was eating and she was getting through Breast milk. So if you're nursing it could be a food allergy .. Another possibility is allergy to the diapers being used or formula
  • We also do cloth diapers and LOVE the rash free results. :)
  • We use Dr.Smiths cream or spray. It's great it will clear up rash really fast. But then once it's cleared up we use aquaphor with every diaper change to prevent it from happening again.
