Mattress Gap - Help

Hi all. I posted this on another board, but did not get much feedback...hoping you all might be able to help!

We received our crib mattress a few days ago and it seems to fit ok, for the most part. There is one corner that I am concerned about, however. I'm not sure if it is truly a concern or if I am just being paranoid...If I squeeze them, I can fit two finger widths in between the crib rail and the mattress in the corner. I can also squeeze in a book that is about 1 inch thick.  I have attached some pictures. Do you think the fit is ok, or is it too large of a gap?

Re: Mattress Gap - Help

  • Will you have blankets to tuck in and under?? Looks fine from what i can see but get someone close to check for piece of mind. Im in newzealand and our midwifes do home visits from time to time they run over bedding carseats bedrooms ect. Quite good for extra assurances about things

  • I would check again after you add the mattress protector and sheets. It doesn't look like it would concern me if if was mine.
  • The mattress gap is a concern when baby can get stuck between the mattress and frame, that gap does not look big enough for baby to get stuck in at all. I think you're fine.
  • I think it's fine. The gap between mattress and crib is more about the sides/top/bottom because you don't want baby getting wedged in there and suffocating. The corner wouldn't bother me.
  • I did research on this topic when I purchased my crib mattress. You should be able to fit no more than 2 fingers between your crib and mattress. So basically no more than an inch of space total in between. Also, account for crib mattress protector and crib sheet as well.
  • We don't have the mattress protector on yet, but the mattress does still have the plastic covering on it. I added the crib sheet as well and the gap still remains...if I put pressure on the mattress, I can squeeze two finger widths in there. Measuring it, it is about 1 to 1.5 inches (depending on the amount of pressure placed on the mattress) in that corner...everywhere else seems ok. I just can't figure out if it's truly an issue or if I'm simply being paranoid...
  • This may not be well taken, but I used a traditional bumper in the gap when my son was a baby. I had it down low enough that it wasn't on his sides or above the mattress at all- so not to be a suffocation hazard.. It just created a flat - gap free space. It was about 2 inches- so he really could have wedged himself.
  • Yea, we are not doing bumpers, so that would not be an option for us.
  • I think you're fine.  Your babe isn't going to smoosh his or her little face into a 1 inch space in the corner, especially if you have to force it with your fingers to get that space.
  • I talked to someone at the Consumer Products Safety Commission who deals with crib safety...he said it looks ok, but I'm still so nervous. Maybe it's just first time mom nerves...I don't know.
