Haven't been on a lot lately so if this topic is over posted I apologize.
So my LO is approaching her 4 month b-day. I got to the same pediatrician as a lot of my friends and I know he is going to give me the go ahead to do whole grain brown rice cereal and avocados, bananas, etc. at our four month appointment. I am so torn on when to start solids. I picked up some organic brown rice cereal at the store and some spoons. What has your experience been with starting solids and what would you recommend?
Re: Starting "Solid Foods"
I wanted to wait 6 mos, but DS was very visibly unsatisfied with just BM. We started him on cereal and prunes, since he'd had those before. He wolfed it down.
The only issue we've had (when he ate sweet potatoes) was HORRIBLE constipation. But now he's getting prunes every day to help with that. He seems to love eating and is not acting hungry after nursing every night anymore. So I guess our experience has been good.
If you're not ready for solids, no rush. If your pedi says it's okay to start that doesn't mean you HAVE to. Just follow your LOs cues and if she seems hungry, maybe try some cereal.
Just because the pedi gives you the okay at 4 months...doesn't mean you have to start soilids. A lot of pedi's will give the okay at 4 months, but would prefer that you wait until 6 months for a whole host of reasons. It sounds like you're really unsure about starting at 4 months.
Personally, if my LO was still satisfied on a full bottle, I would have waited until the 6 month mark..but since every baby is different, it didn't work out that way for us and we had to start at 4.5 months.
We started with cereals (rice and oats) and just started veggies this week. I've put a hold on the veggies now b/c DS got a really bad diaper rash and the change in his bowels further irritated the rash. We're also currently trying to rule out if he has a sensitivity to sweet potatoes or not since his stools turned really mucusy vs being exposed to a stomach bug at a wedding this weekend....
Bottom line, if you aren't ready, and you don't think your LO is ready either, give it another month or two. No need to have them grow up faster than necessary.
