Harmony Test- false positives

So I've heard that a lot of genetic tests can give false positives. But, the Harmony test advertises a super small percentage of false positives. We have to decide in a week if we want the test. Has anyone had a bad experience from it? Any false positives??

Re: Harmony Test- false positives

  • We had a great experience with it. Test results came back with low odds for chromosomal abnormalities and we found out we are having a girl. :)

  • I just had it done this past week. It was so great to see baby during the u/s! I was also told that since I had HELLP/severe pre-e with my last pregnancy that there's a chance of a case positive coming back due to something being funky with the placenta. I guess there's a relation between previous issues and the placenta? This was news to me but I'm happy they informed me of it.
Here's to hoping for no phone call and that wonderful piece of paper that says "low risk"!

    Good luck at your appointment!
  • The false positive rate really depends on the chromosome for which its testing. There is a lower false positive rate for T21 vs. and XY abnormality. Good luck!
  • A friend of mine had a false negative with the harmony test. He daughter was born with Down's after being told the chances were very slim. The ultrasound part of the test all came back very normal. I decided against the test due to stress on my part. Plus, we would keep the baby no matter the results. I know I know, it's good to know ahead of time to prepare. But, if the results are not 100% I could be preparing for something that's not going to happen. I struggled with my decision for a while, but after finding out it would cost me close to 800-1000 dollars out of pocket, we went with no go. If it was 100% accurate, yes, but that just doesn't exist in medicine.
  • I had a false positive for turners syndrome with the test. It was hell as I chose not to do an amnio and I waited it out. She was born healthy. They say that the test is more accurate for the other trisomies, however my genetic counselor at Magee women's hosp which is one of the best upmc facilities in the country said that their actual tests at that hospital is about 88-95% accuracy for the trisomies not the 99 which the companies bost.

I was told the same thing by my genetic counselor. A lot of these companies boast 99% accuracy, but that is only for T21. The other trisomies (13, 18, Turners) only have about an 87.5% accuracy.
