Infertility

Recently turned 44 (gulp), healthy like a 20 yr old.. debating taking injectables.. any advice?

HI.. I recently went through all the testing at my Specialist's office.. everything was great except I have one scarred fallopian tube. : (

Anyway, we have to decide before my next cycle (in about 10 days or so) if we want to proceed with injectables and timed intercourse. I would like to try as they would be able to stimulate my ovaries and give me more of a chance of having my right ovary produce an egg (or a few). My husband is not sold on the idea yet.. I'm not sure if I am tempting fate or if I should give it a go??

We have been trying for 2 years. This is my first marriage (at age 41) and his. He does not have any children and I have a 22 year old.

It seems crazy, but I would love to have our own little family. I always wanted more children, but life happened and I was dealt what I was dealt. I'd like another chance.

Does anyone have any recommendations? experiences to share? or opinions on injectables?

Thanks for "listening"! Happy-healthy pregnancies to all the 40+ MAMMAS out there! <3

  • It can happen naturally at your age and with iui but it's more likely your eggs aren't the best and it might take awhile to find a good one this way. Best of luck.

  • ***LOSS mentioned***

I am about to be 43, my husband is 40 and doesn't have any children.  I have a 12 yr old and a 16 yr old and we too want a child between us - In May I will be doing IVF via FET with a donor egg and my husbands sperm!

I didn't go the injectable/natural route but did try naturally and got pregnant the first month of trying, unfortunately we didn't have good results...but I take some of the blame for that...I was uneducated in understanding what I could do to improve our chances....such as vitamin supplements, no caffeine, etc.  I'm sure you can go guard rail to guard rail here but I wish I would have at least taken some supplements 90 days prior to trying....just my 2 cents.

I wish you and your husband the best of luck!

You may want to consider reading up on the various vitamins (CoQ10, Ubiqinol, DHEA and a whole host of others)  for getting pregnant over 40 women.  Also an important tip I learned along the way....seems obvious now looking back...but I would suggest twice a day ovulation testing....I think I mis-timed an IUI testing only once a day :(.
  • @Klang14 Thank you for your comment and advice. My heart goes out to you and your family.. a loss is difficult.

I am taking prenatals for what seems like years and I make sure they have DHEA, etc., etc. I know this will not get me pregnant, but it can help get those "nutrients" in my system for when I do.

Baby dust to you my dear for your #3!! : )
  • I think you should go for it !! My husband and I did the follistim injections, wasn't bad then the ovidrel shot and iui. The third month I got pregnant !! Still cant believe it !! we tried for years. Go for what you want !! I am 40 and hubby is 43 and I am 17 weeks pregnant. We had unexplained fertility.

  • @kayleesky AWESOME NEWS CONGRATS!!!! thanks for your advice! All the best! : )
  • i am 42 (started ttc at 39). I wish we had been a little more aggressive and started earlier with injections or clomid to increase our chances. We are now on our first ivf cycle. Early to mid 40 women statistically have fewer quality eggs so the more you can throw out there the better chance you have of finding a good one.

  • @dolphin012 I feel the EXACT same way... I wish we would have lit a fire under our bums and started earlier too! But now we are HERE and we'll make the best of it. BABY DUST TO YOU MY DEAR!! ; )

I say the same thing to everybody who asks this to me IRL :) Be as aggressive as you can as quickly as you can. I was 39 and we actually skipped injectables altogether and went directly to IVF (though that it not the correct decision for everybody) because you are not accruing more healthy eggs with each cycle that you wait through. We both say everytime that we look at our DD that we are so glad we didn't waste time and that we got her and also left a window open to TTC a sibling.

Healthy as a horse is an important part of that, but egg supply is often just math. My clinic actually doesn't necessarily think that injectables are the right call for women over 40 because you're calling down multiple eggs of a limited remaining supply of healthy eggs without doing the step that would be most effective at ensuring insemination.

I will also say this as a warning - I went from an IVF appropriate AMH of over 1 to an off the charts low .4 in less than 6 months, so there is really no way to know when your supply will cliff. It can "happen at any age," but that is terrible and misleading advice becaue for the vast majority of people it will not happen after 40 unless you do *a lot* of work :)
