Flying while pregnant

Okay, so I know there have been other posts about flying while pregnant, and I know that everyone says to wear compression socks and walk the aisles, but I read a few posts a while back where some women said they had miscarriages after flying.  I'm beyond terrified to fly while I'm pregnant and we are trying to make arrangements to visit family in about a week and a half.  I'm 12w1d now.  I'm just looking for some shared experiences.  Anybody have a negative outcome after flying?  Or know anyone who has?  Or have a doctor that advises against it?  I'm going to talk to my dr tomorrow about it, but I just wanted to hear some personal experiences from other women as well.  Thanks.

Re: Flying while pregnant

  • I've flown three times since I was pregnant and I'm fine.

  • I am flying in 2 days and I am a little nervous about it. But I talked to my Dr. and he said it was fine. My bff just had her baby last June and she flew multiple times in every trimester and was fine.
  • Especially this early you're fine. I'm flying at 18 weeks, 20 weeks, 28 weeks, 30 weeks, and 39w1d. I'm only a little nervous about the last one, but it's only a 25 minute flight. I've flown during all of my pregnancies and I've never had a single problem. (This is my 5th child.)
  • I'm 14 weeks tomorrow and have flown 3x already this pregnancy. Flying again this week and have at least 4 more work trips planned before October. Flew the same amount during my 1st pregnancy. Never had an issue.

  • I have also already flown 6 times in the last 6 weeks.
  • Thanks ladies, that makes me feel better!

Yup I have flown 8 times in the last month and my doc said it was totally ok! The only thing I might recommend is to maybe bring a few snacks with you to help settle your stomach if there is any turbulence...my last few flights were pretty bumpy and while I normally love bumpy flights (I tend to fall asleep), now being pregnant, I started feeling airsick...totally not the norm for me- but felt better when I ate something :)
  • I flew at 16 weeks with my first and 12 weeks with my second. No problem at all. My midwife said it was totally fine.
  • I flew at 9-10 weeks and I was perfectly fine. In fact, I usually take klonopin to calm my nerves before flying but couldn't because baby and I did so well. I was so proud of myself! However, I would def bring lots of snacks and water because we had turbulence and didn't get snacks and water until halfway in to our flight and I thought I was going to die from hunger and thirst lol.
  • I travel frequently for work and often have to fly. I've made about 3 round trip cross country flights during 1st trimester, and I'm flying again this weekend. I have had no problems :) Just keep yourself comfortable, drink lots of water and make sure to stretch your legs! You'll be just fine
  • I've flown twice so far this pregnancy, I'm 12w6d. No problems, no complications, my dr. says it's all fine. I plan on flying at least 2 more times before this baby comes. My one suggestion is to get a big bottle of water so you don't dry out and take snacks, especially if it's a long flight. Have fun!
  • With my son, I flew round trip 3 times. No issues. I'm planning on flying this time at the end of the 2nd trimester.

  • I flew 4 times while pregnant with my twins and already have 6 flights planned for this pregnancy. Flying is perfectly fine.

  • Flying is perfectly safe.  The compression socks and getting up and walking around are just for long flights (same applies for long car rides). Just stretch and you'll be fine.  I flew at 14 w and 32 w with my last pregnancy (longest flight 3.5 hours) and was just fine.  I also never owned compression socks.

  • I flew at 9 weeks and didn't have any issues. It looks like lots of women are frequent fliers here, so you should rest assured that you'll be okay! I don't think I've personally ever heard of flying causing a miscarriage (not saying it doesn't, but I just don't know the stats). I'd feel good about flying again!

  • Awesome!  Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences:)
  • I feel like maybe it was just a coincidence for those people maybe? I'm flying 2 days before 20 weeks, so in 6 weeks (so excited). Then I'm flying with a month old baby in November for thanksgiving.
  • I flew earlier this pregnancy, I was around 10w and 11w, and I was fine. It was just like flying while not pregnant, except for all the ginger.
  • i was about 12 weeks when I flew from California to NYC and back. I was just fine: no nausea and no cramping. I was just a bit uncomfortable because I was in between my husband and another person. But if you're really nervous, talk to your doctor about it, as you said.

  • I will be flying at 16 and 17 weeks, from NY to Puerto Rico and back.  Although I am high risk, my doctor cleared me for these flights.

  • Glad you asked this.

  • I'm a flight attendant and while I've definitely cut down on the amount that I work, I am usually flying for 3 days straight! For me, it might be different because I'm always up and moving about...but you should be fine. Once they turn he seatbelt sign off and it is safe to get up you can get up whenever you need to safely. I know I don't mind when mommas come
Hang out with me in the galleys on long flights! Oh, and I'm 12 weeks 2 days!
