Helping with the blow of getting AF

cards10cards10 member
edited April 2015 in Trying to Get Pregnant
Does anyone do anything as a sort of gift or pick-me-up when they get AF and learn they are out for that cycle? I know I feel disheartened and defeated each month that happens so this time I want to switch it up and know there's something positive in it for me if that's our outcome. My bday was last week and the hubs bought me a gift card to my hair place for a coloring. I've never professionally dyed my hair bc I'm lazy and cheap (read: frugal) lol, so I've decided if I get AF again this cycle that I'll finally get rid of these grays that have been plaguing me since I was a teen :) What does everyone else do? Or what would you want to do?

    I'm sorry :-(

Haha I've definitely done this as well! And I haven't gotten AF yet, 5DPO today. Just asking...

    Edit: typing is hard
  • It's my birthday on the 11th, so I'll test before and either have the gift of a bfp or six pack of blue moons.
  • Blue moon!! Yum.

Well, this last go round, DH got me two ginormous pieces of cheesecake from our favorite local diner. I find putting in an extra sweat session helps (though I'm pretty useless days 1 and 2 in terms of doing anything other than standing).

I kind of like the idea of getting wasted though - might try that next time around.

    ::hugs::

    Such as sushi

I've got nothing wrong with the long dinner date with booze, but just want to point out you can absolutely have sushi when you're pregnant. No reason to give it up.
Even tho its raw? And fishes like tuna?

just as long as it is g
from a safe place. Remember, people across the world eat fish as their main source of food. Just limit the high mercury ones, like shark.

  • So yesterday was my second IUI. After my first failed attempt I imbibed with a few with my family at a gathering. This time, I will be testing two days before my birthday. So either cake, present and a few drinks with my uncle (birthday celebration together) or, here's hoping for a BFP for everybody!!!!
  • I'm curious. Are people drinking as one-off's to cheer up the BFNs or generally are people drinking while TTC? Only I understand that it can hinder TTC efforts so I stopped drinking 3 months prior to starting TTC. Was I being too cautious?

Binge drinking can hinder TTC efforts, but having an alcoholic drink once in a way is safe. Everything in moderate.
    Thank God for Raid.

I limit myself to a glass of wine with dinner or like 2-3 drinks over several hours on a weekend. But that's just me. Exactly what @PugsandKisses said, everything in moderation.
  • Argh not to hijack the thread (sorry OP) but I do find the evidence on alcohol consumption and fertility extremely confusing.

Hahaha @Wallisimpson sorry for the confusion. Of course everyone is different and entitled to their own habits, but for me personally ... I begin to withhold from alcohol after ovulation so when I get a BFN it's just a little bit of an, "ok, guess I don't have to worry about that now ..." It is nice though when it coincides with a party or social situation and then you feel free to indulge, as you should.

But in general, my drinking habits would be labeled mild at best, maybe a glass of wine or two or one beer, once or possibly twice a week.

** however, what I have understood from the research is that a pregnancy is not influenced by alcohol until implantation has occurred, when the fetus begins to draw nutrients from the mother... And as we know here, that would be no earlier than 7-9 DPO
As for affecting fertility, as PP said ... All in moderation :)

    Stuck in the box. grr

This is wrong. The embryo does not draw nutrients from the mother until the placenta is fulling formed, which is week 7 to 10 (depending on litature). Up until this point, the embyro consumes it's requirements from the yolk sac.   Not saying to go gand get sh!t faced at 5 weeks. However, for a normal healthy couple*, moderate alcohol intake is ok and safe in the TWW.
Hence the saying 'drink till it is pink".

*Some RE's will have you refrain from all alcohol  for certain medical reason. Hence I said 'normal' health couple.

Last month I didn't drink at all bc I wasn't temping so I wasn't sure about O. This month just during AF because I'm still not 100% there, but once I get the hang of this the above post is exactly what I intend to do.
If I started refraining from a glass of wine at a social dinner literally everyone there would ask me if I was pregnant. From what I've read I'm ok with choosing moderation. Again, I haven't been at this long so I might change my tune a few months down the road, for now this works for me.

  • Cheers for your thoughts. I was more curious about the fertility impact pre-conception rather than impact on the baby in utero. It seems counterintuitive that the mother's consumption isn't influential til the placenta is formed. That is late! @nicoleann21 the excuses for avoiding the booze do need to get more and more creative :)

Binge drinking will affect TTC, but only to a degree.

I'm also in the drink till its pink camp. But I do try to decrease consumption prior to O bc I want big, plump eggs

    Good to know! Thanks @PugsandKisses

@nicoleann21 - I stuck to my drinking philosophy and still had a very clear temp shift ... FF end up giving me dotted crosshairs based on CM but otherwise, I don't think the occasional drink influences temps too much - at least in my experience

@Wallisimpson cheers to your efforts! :) it definitely can't hurt anything to refrain!!

  • OP I think you are on to something here! I think we all deserve a treat when that evil AF comes to town. She is the worst house guest
  • I'm not sure I ever thought about it as a treat or pick me up, usually a drown my sorrows, as I go get a bottle a wine. But with the power of positive thinking, I'll start thinking of it as a treat!

  • I love a good drink and sushi!

Also, just wanted to mention that I think the reason that most doctors suggest that you avoid raw sushi is more because of the fact that raw / undercooked meats and fish can harbor toxoplasma and other bacteria that, if you happen to get sick or have a weakened immune system, can actually infect the placenta.  The mercury is more of a separate issue.
