Boat ride while pregnant?

My husband and I have tickets for a whale watching tour tomorrow. We found a company that allows pregnant women on board (the rest all have strict policies against expectant mothers). The policy is based entirely on the tendency for pregnant women to get sick from the inherent motion of the boat. I don't have a history of sea sickness and have gone a full two weeks without morning sickness. It's only a 2 hr boat trip, but waters will be choppy.

Has anyone been on a boat in the ocean while pregnant? How did it affect you?

  • Went on a fishing party boat a few weeks ago.  I do have motion sickness, particularly if there's turbulance while landing in an airplane or stop and go traffic when i'm a passenger in a car.  It was a 4 hour boat trip, and I vomited probably 6 times.  I was so miserable.

and I took a zofran thinking that might help keep away the sickies... didn't work obviously.

If you have no history of motion sickness, you'll probably be ok.  Some people on the boat swore by their sea bands.  You could always bring some if you're worried.

  • I coach rowing twice a week from a motor boat. Sometimes I put in in full speed in chop to chase down a boat. Unless you're still nauseous a lot of the time I wouldn't think you'd be bothered by it at all. Maybe try to get a seat away from the engine though, the fumes can make me feel barfy and obviously they're not great for a growing brain

  • I was on a high speed boat in the Caribbean in February. No issues but I don't get motion/sea sick and I didn't have bad morning sickness at all
  • I went whale watching in Hawaii when I was 10 years old the waves were crazy and choppy I never got sea sick but you literally couldnt even stand up it got so bad they had to take us back to the dock. We did see lots of whales it was beautiful.

We go out fishing frequently. I've been on many boats and only got sick once, so I just make sure to take something for that. You can those sea bands as mentioned above and see if that helps or to have just in case.

  • I'm a big believer in sea bands so it might be worth picking those up as a precaution.
  • I was on a boat all day today in the ocean!! Didn't have any problems! My little guy even seemed to like it was kicking around like crazy! You should be fine!
