maternity leave over holidays

How exciting is it that our little ones will grant us the entire holiday season off with family!! I am an RRT and our hospital requires us to work every other holiday. I will get out of Christmas this year which would have been my holiday to work!

With my daughter, I had just started working at this hospital so had no pto and no short term disability, couldn't take the full 12 weeks but now, I will have 12 weeks and I will enjoy every bit of it! \:D/

  • I'm so excited. I was nervous to tell my boss because December is our 2nd busiest month of the year with it being year end. Her reaction was so great, she told me to enjoy it because this is the only time I won't have to seek approval for Christmas eve off, and get to spend the entire holiday season at home with our bundle of joy. It made me feel so much better and so excited!
  • I am super excited!! I am a sales leader in retail so this is our busiest, most stressful time of the year.. I can't wait to be able to spend this time with my newborn and my family for a change! :)

I don't work at the moment, so maternity leave isn't my concern, however, the timing of this baby is just perfect. My husband was supposed to be gone for over a month for training, missing Thanksgiving. But, with the baby due a week after he was supposed to leave, he is most likely not going to have to go.
  • I was hoping for this!!! I have to work every other holiday. I was off last Christmas. Will get this one off, and I will be off next Christmas cause it's just going to be my turn.I can't wait!!!!
  • Same here! I got lucky and traded someone last minute two Christmases ago, last year wasn't my turn, off on maternity leave this year, and not my turn next year. Woohoo. After I got my positive, this was my second thought. Haha perfect timing.
  • As a nurse, I'm also super excited about this!
  • Healthcare working mamas unite! I am so excited to get thanksgiving and Christmas off in the same year. My holiday rotation was the crappy one this year so I was pretty excited.
  • I also work in a business where we work holidays. I have enough seniority where I have taken Christmas off the last few years but I usually volunteer to work Thanksgiving and have Black Friday off. I'm due on Thanksgiving this year so we will see if I will be working. I would love the comp day to add to my mat leave, but we shall see.
  • I try not to plan ahead but I have secretly been so excited about this! We get 13 weeks maternity leave so I'll be home all of Nov, Dec & Jan!
  • my DD was born the day before thanksgiving and it was awesome having 8 weeks off that included 3 holidays. We planned this one to be the same, since i work in a season sensitive company and winter is our slow time it works out, Also we had to plan around bow hunting season < Yea.. i'm being serious, my husband takes his hunting very very seriously.

No NJ. My job allows us to run our FLA and FMLA separately. It's actually 12 weeks for both which is a total of 24 weeks off. I always take an extra 6 weeks unpaid so I have an even 6 months. I will note that I don't get paid 100% during fmla though.
  • I live in NJ too! I am the store manager and of course the holidays are our busiest time. I am looking forward to not having to work over just one holiday season! I am nervous to tell my boss bc of the timing, but I will hire and train someone prior to help out. I want to take as much time off as possible, so hopefully it will work out with our finances

@EllaStaxx and @french_mani Yay Nj moms!!!!!!!!!!'
  • I am also a retail store manager so I'm afraid to tell my boss. Black Friday to Christmas Is our busiest time and I am due on Thanksgiving.
  • I'm a restaurant manager and work 10 plus hour days over the holidays. It will be nice to have the break!
  • I just started my current job this past Sept, so as the newbie in the office I had to keep coming in the office thru the holidays. Sorry suckas, this year I'm off!!

I don't get maternity leave, because I am considered an Independent Contractor. I was praying that would change soon since I've been with this company for 5 years but realistically it won't. So I will either be taking 8 weeks of an unpaid Leave of Absence or I won't be returning to work. Not sure which way the ball will roll yet.
  • Same here, I don't get leave an have to pay my rent still to keep my spot. I'll only be able to take about 5-6 weeks off.
  • I work in retail and we are required to work thanksgiving... Not this year!!!
  • I too am a RN who works every other holiday, Christmas happened to be my holiday this year so I am very excited to have them all 3 of them off this year.
  • It's going to be great! This is my 8th year with my advertising agency and although I'm normally on call for every holiday that won't be the case this year! Baby & I will proof their work while watching the commercials on TV until March!
  • So glad so many of you can relate!!!
  • I work for a pharmaceutical research company and we are closed for 2 weeks over the holidays Every year. As a result January and February and pretty crazy so I am excited to return after things calm down :)

  • I work in the office of a home health and hospice, me and another woman rotate on call week on week off. This yr every single holiday would fall on my on call weekend. But now it looks like I'll be getting all the important holidays lol
  • I didn't even think of this before this post!! Woot!
  • I'm a substitute teacher and missed out on mat leave by 15 days last time!! We were good financially until like January and things started getting tight. I'm going back to work in a few weeks and only have may, June, September, and some of October before I have to be done so there's no way I'll get enough hours in that short of time. I'm running a few kinder prep classes in the summer but that'll only amount to like 30 clocked hours.
My position will be held but I won't get any EI while off.

  • I am an RRT too. This year I was supposed to work Thanksgiving and Christmas eve so I am feeling lucky with when my leave will be.
  • I'm from Canada too, and also completely floored with how little mat leave is for the US.  I'll get a year, and if I need to be put off earlier (at doctor's request) that'll get included as well.  I'm excited to have the baby right before Christmas as its my year to host Christmas for my side of the family and now I'll be guaranteed the time off plus have my sisters around!

  • I'm a nurse too and so excited to have all the holidays off! We have to work 2 every yr out of thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years so this will be the first year in a long time that I get to spend the holidays with our family. We timed this baby very well lol!
  • @roxyboard8889 You get a year? I can't even imagine! My job only gives 6 weeks leave if a natural birth and 8 weeks if a c-section.
  • I'm an independent contractor as well....no STD or any time off. Whatever I take off I will not get paid at all. Not sure what I'm going to do yet :(

On the flip side, I couldn't imagine not working for a year. I get 16weeks paid at 100% salary, and I won't be taking the full amount. I love my job!
  • I wish we got a year. 12 weeks, I think you might get an extra 2 in WI now to bond with child, have to look into that. I will also use a week of vaca at beginning and end to at least have 14, if not 16. I think I get paid for 6 weeks and then another 2-4 partial. But to me the longer the break the better regardless !
