Buttons on Baby Sweaters--Am I being a paranoid FTM mom?

So I posted this question in the craft forum but that seems pretty dead so I'm cross posting over here. I've been looking into sweaters for the baby (somehow my ftm preggo brain panicked at the thought of a tiny baby in winter and having it freeze lol) but a lot of them have buttons. Lots of buttons. I can't help but wonder, isn't that kind of a choking hazard? I have no clue how I won't panic every moment the baby is in a buttoned sweater but maybe I'm just way overthinking it? Thoughts? Is this the irrational new mom panic taking over?

These are some of the patterns I've been looking at, for context

Re: Buttons on Baby Sweaters--Am I being a paranoid FTM mom?

  • My 4 month old niece wears buttons on her clothes and she has never ripped any off to put in her mouth. I think she is too distracted by the ten million other things she sees around that she can easily pick up and drool all over.

I'm a FTM so I am certainly no expert, but I have never been around babies or children that have choked on their buttons. I never even thought about it before

  • Maybe I wouldn't trust a teething 10 mo to sleep in one, but just to wear would be fine. All our homemade sweaters, and most of M's coats have them, and it never occurred to me really. I notice while buttoning if one is coming loose, and I just pulled it off or fixed it before she could get to it :)

  • My DD is almost 2 and I have never heard of this being a concern. I suppose it's possible to choke but little babies typically don't even pay any attention to their outfits at all in my experience. My two year old had never tried to pull at a button either. Don't get anything with buttons if it will worry you though.
  • Thanks for the feedback guys! I think it was less that I was panicked, and more that I just felt clueless about if this was something I was supposed to be concerned over. Buttoned sweaters it is! Although I'll probably knot each button like five times just to make me feel better :-)
  • It's not a concern at all. And if you see one coming loose just pull it off yourself before bub does or put it aside to fix later. My main dislike with my son was hoodies! The ones without a zipper or buttons. They are soooo hard to get over babies heads. So I steer clear of those.
  • For me I would rather have buttons than zippers. I've seen waaaayy too many zip-on-skin accidents with littles ones. Legs kicking too much or arm waving and "oops" mama zipped on the skin. With my first I was so cautious with zippers because I had a fear of doing the same. Accidents happen and it could happen me but I made sure I didn't have to many zippers around my kid because I developed a crazy fear of hurting my child....with zippers. Lol. I can see your point with buttons and now that I have experienced motherhood for a few years with my first I can surely say you will look back and laugh for over thinking things like "buttons" and "zippers". My biggest worry is what bug is DS going to bring in around the new baby when momma isn't looking.
  • My daughter wore cardigans and sweaters with buttons all the time. She never even noticed them. The only thing we had an issue with was her chewing on drawstring like decorative pieces from shirts or sweaters. I'd just be cautious and check the buttons before putting it on.
  • I don't think you need to worry. And you're not paranoid I was crazy about putting DD to sleep with socks on for naps because she'd take them off and they were always wet so I knew they were in her mouth. I just kept picturing some gag scene.
  • If you are making your own sweaters and want to be super-safe, you could use snaps instead of buttons. The buttons are adorable, but I've heard that trying to button a squirming baby can be a real pain.
  • Aside from probably not even noticing, babies don't have the fine motor skills necessary to even grasp a button yet. While they may get lucky and get a finger or 2 on it. Grab and pull isn't even possible for almost a year. (I'm an OT and work on fine motor skills daily lol)
