My newborn can't get enough formula?!

My baby was born on March 20 and was 7lbs 6 oz. she left the hospital at 7 lbs. first checkup she weighed in at 7lbs 10 oz! She wants 4 oz every 2 to 2.5 hours. Is this normal!?

  • It sounds like a lot. Are you sure she is not just sucking on the bottle to pacify. Babies on the breast can pacify on the breast without actually sucking milk. Babies on a bottle can not stop the milk flow. Maybe stop after 2 ounces and give her a break and see if she is satisfied. You could try offering a pacifier.

  • I feed her using the 2 oz ready to use bottles of enfamil. After she's burped she will cry to be fed more. Can't resist her smile and "mommy feed me" look! It's not everytime but I would say 6 out of 10 times. I don't want my baby to be hungry but I'm also worried it's not healthy for her.
  • My daughter weighed 6.8 lbs at birth, went down at her first wellness visit, and 2 weeks later weighed in at 8.6 lbs!!! She's exclusively breastfed. Ask the pediatrician when you have a check up, if doctor isn't too concerned, don't worry about it. She could've just been going through a normal growth spurt.
  • Some babies have a heartier appetite. Mine is never satisfied with less than 4oz if she's taking from the bottle.

  • My LO is eating 3oz every two-five hours (crazy span of time I know!) but my pediatrician said its all about the total amount she has a day. For her size (which jumped in 15oz in 12 days! Now 8lbs 10oz) she should in take 21-24oz each day. She is usually hitting that in take even while battling a cold :) she is my hungry little Ella-bug :)
  • You might want to consider pacing feeds, especially if there are reflux issues. YouTube it.
