CVS BBT thermometer & temps

Good morning! Happy Monday! So I've been temping with a cvs temp but it always says lo when I start it up. The temps should be right? I hope... Could it just need batteries? I've temped thoughout the day just to see if my temp changes and it's never more than 97.99... I've checked my thyroid and it's fine.... So idk if I just bought a defective thermometer because it's brand new...I've also attached my chart
"Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

  • Mine always says Lo when I first turn it on...it's how I know it's ready to use. Hope that helps.

That's normal. I've been temping 6 years and I rarely go above 98.2. I think I had 98.4 one time. Even while i was pregnant.

I would recommend you read the instructions for your thermometer. I think it's usually standard for a therm to say "lo" while it's turning on.

  • If the OPKs are throwing you off then just stop considering them. They do not tell you if you Oed, only that there was a surge in LH. That can happen even without the O. If you're concerned about those, then just focus on the temp and CM.

My biggest concern is that my RE told me to do the opk and if i didn't get a surge to come in today.. i did get a surge but based on my temps I haven't O'd so idk what to do now... I really dont want to miss this cycle...

You're looking and freaking out about the day to day too much. The overall pattern is what's important. I can't stress enough that you need to relax a little or you're going to drive yourself nuts.

Did you switch thermometers mid cycle? I think it's possible that your chart is being thrown off by those really high temps in the beginning. Also, there's no harm in asking your RE for more monitoring, or maybe a trigger shot next time.

  • If your RE gave you those instructions then you should get in touch with her and ask the same questions you're posing to us. She can answer those far better than we can as we don't know anything more than what your chart is telling us. Let her know exactly what you just said ... you got a positive OPK but your temps aren't showing the increase, and ask if she still wants you to come in. Or go in anyway and talk to her in person. We aren't going to be able to help with such specific instructions from your RE and no knowledge of your situation. But like @27alex said, you're going to drive yourself nuts looking at every little thing and analyze it so closely.

Thanks ladies... I gave her a call but she hadn't made it in... I will keep trying.

No I didn't. Using the same one... But I guess that's what happens when you have PCOS

  • @TheBorg7of9 - I was thinking the same thing. Your temps on CD 8&9 could be throwing things off and potentially even the few days before that. Do you super knowledgeable ladies (Borg and @27alex) know if clomid raise temps at all while taking it? I thought I read somewhere that it can but that's speculation so please don't take that as truth. Just throwing it out there as a possibility and something to maybe ask your RE if/when you show her your chart.
  • I feel like I've read somewhere that temping isn't reliable with Clomid. But on a Clomid cycle you should be having bloodwork and ultrasounds done so you don't need to rely on temping to confirm ovulation.

Yes. I agree with the ultrasounds.  i am trying to get in touch with my re now because there should be something that she can do to let me know if I have ovulated...

PCOS causes LH surges without necessary ovulation. You could just have had a random surge and you'll ovulate later. A lot of ladies with PCOS don't use OPKs because they can be insanely frustrating.

You shouldn't be using OPKs when on Clomid! You're doctor should be giving you ultrasounds...so yes, please call your RE.

I feel like I missed it or you never mentioned you were on Clomid in any of your other questions.

I mentioned it on my intro and its on my chart... I thought that was weird that she would recommend that i use opks... I've been calling her like crazy but shes with a patient... and unfortunately she is like 40 miles away

Might be time to look for a new doctor.
  • ^ this.

You really should not be taking clomid without being more closely monitored.

I've had three ultrasounds so far.  the last one was for a follie count... but not to confirm ovulation.

  • I don't think they usually do ultrasounds to check that ovulation occurred after the fact. I think they would do ultrasounds to watch growing follies, then do a progesterone test at 7 dpo. But I do think it is weird to add in opks.
I think it's better to get a trigger shot, so you know with more certainty on your timing.
Is there anything else to explain your high early temps, like drinking, sleeping in, heating pad?
Regardless, I might ask for the trigger next time. Also I do think you must have ovulated on cd 14 since your temp did go up, your follies were big enough and you had a positive opk. The only thing throwing it off are the early high temps.

  • You stayed up nearly all night on Thursday night, slept for an hour, and then temped for Friday morning? Is that right? Just wanting to make sure for what I'm looking at on your chart. If that's correct, that could absolutely contribute to the really high temp on Friday morning. That's like you lying down for an hour in the middle of the day and then getting up and temping. Your body doesn't have time to get to its basal temp. That's why they say three hours of sleep, so your body isn't up and moving around and thus raising your temp.

If this was me, just for the heck of it I would go back in and "disregard" the Friday morning temp and see what FF does. I'd change it back afterward, but taking that out one of consideration may or may not change the way FF reads it. But again, that's just me and my curiosity.

I stayed up on Wednesday night... I got my first positive opk that day.  But I was sick that night so I stayed up until 5 or so and then got up (thursday am) at 6:30 to temp which was 97.89...

  • I'd go ahead and change it back. I thought you meant the previous Wed/Thurs when you had higher temps (right after clomid) ... not the more recent one. I'd put it back the way it was before.
