should I stay away from Mexican cheese at Mexican restaurants? I'm afraid the cheese isn't safe to eat but I have such a strong craving for the cheese they put on enchiladas and tacos... Any thoughts ?

  • This makes me feel so much better! Thank you!
  • I'm actually going to Mexico in May I will be th there at the end of the first trimester. I'm a little worried about the greasey food there. They put a lot of lard in there food, espically beans. I hope its ok.

I've been eating Mexican throughout the pregnancy (I'm 8w1d) now and have had no problems!  Like the others said, it's highly unlikely the FDA would allow unpasteurized cheese at any licensed restaurant in the USA.  Enjoy it, there's not much better haha!:)
  • @OliviaandHamid Not all Mexicans cook with lard! Just ask if it's vegetarian. Black beans are most likely your safest bet, as they don't tend to be cooked refried style as pinto. And if it's not refried, you're about 95% safe to be lard free. Enjoy your trip! All I'm craving these days is Mexican hot sauce, which I normally don't eat!
  • My dr said almost all queso at Mexican restaurants is just a plain old white cheese melted! It isn't actually queso blanco which we shouldn't have due to the lack of pasteurization. You should be good! I always just ask them to check the label for me!
  • Haha, this is funny because my husband brought home Mexican last night and I ate about half a container of cheese dip before I remembered that it might not be pasteurized, so reading this made me feel better ;)
  • Plenty of real, authentic Mexican cheese is pasturized. No need to worry! :)
  • These posts are making me feel so much better! Now I can give into my cravings!! :)
  • Also if the dip has been heated up you're fine too. Other than alcohol there's not much you need to avoid al together, especially if you trust the restaurant- for things like sushi.
