Diet and exercise issues...anyone else?

Okay, so before pregnancy I worked out 4x a week and ate relatively clean, I'm a personal trainer and teach Pilates as well. However, since 2 weeks I have been SO sick/nauseous , tired, etc. And bc of the nausea only breads, pastas/rice and chip/crackers were appealing (even fried food which I NEVER touched)... I always get smoothies in but that's about the only thing healthy for a while. Starting to feel a little better now (14 wks) but I feel like I've totally let my body go! I don't mind my tummy I totally embrace that, but my butt and legs just feel huge and blah. And I am so swollen. Friends and family have even made comments about how swollen I am etc. My husband compliments me all the time how he loves it, but he's always too kind lol. I just always envisioned being fit while prego ... I know I'll feel a lot better once I get back to working out and eating healthy consistently which I can now start doing... I just wanted to vent and see if anyone else was feeling the same or in a similar situation, or experienced the same and was able to get back into it in the 2nd trimester and all was well! I'm the first Of my friends to have a baby so I don't have anyone else to confide in without looking at me like I'm crazy! Thanks ladies! - oh and I'll end with I am very happy for my body to go through these changes and to have this little blessing, I just want to be as healthy and fit as possible.

Re: Diet and exercise issues...anyone else?

  • Yep. I'm with you. It sucks, doesn't it? I was doing the Tracy Anderson method (which I know many trainers don't love, but I do!) for 2 years. I even bought her Pregnancy Project thinking I would effortlessly slide into my routine. Well...ha. ha. ha. Since February, I've worked out maybe 10 times and it makes me feel like $hit. Friends recently took a photo of me and my face just looks puffy and fat! I won't publish it because we haven't officially announced and for those who don't know, it looks like I have been hitting the pizza (which I have) hard!

And then you see photos of stars pregnant and how great and glowing they look! It's discouraging. I have faith that once we have some energy back and are back to eating somewhat normal, it'll balance out. Here's hoping! Do you also have good days and bad days? I get two great days a week now, which is an improvement to last month, but I'm still hoping for a few more.

Hang in there! Just know you are NOT alone.

  • I'm right there with you guys! I'm starting to have a few more good days here and there now, and I've managed to make it to the gym twice in the last few days which is a HUGE step (considering I didn't go for the first 3 months). However, now that I think about it....I did go get a pizza after I left the gym yesterday. Baby steps... ;)

  • Ah thank you @PreggersinParis ! Too funny I actually am a fan of Tracy Anderson style workouts! And bought her pregnancy DVD also! I only did it once and it was actually just too easy/slow for me (but that was on a good day lol) yes good days and bad days.... I get 1 then completely shot for the next 6! Every little bit counts, but I know inconstancy doesn't produce maintenance or results. Yes, I have faith We will get it back! Hang in there also! So great to know you and @jamielee+1 experience the same. Yes pizza and cheese what is up with that?! Lol
  • In addition, @preggersinparis , I totally thought I would have that celebrity glow and fit look! So discouraging. Hopefully once we are able to get our energy and health back we will! Lol
  • I'm in the same boat as well. I was running 5ks every weekend (actually ran 2 before I knew I was pregnant) and doing a lot of high intensity interval training. I thought I was going to be the most fit pregnant person ever!! However extreme exhaustion and an appetite that never goes away have made it difficult- even though I know it's for a great reason, it's so crazy to feel like your body is not your own anymore!
  • @agourlay
I must not be as in good of shape as I thought! LOL! I'm out of breath when doing the floor work of the Pregnancy Project. I'm on month 4 and it was a killer! Today seems like a decent day and will bust out the mat and DVD + a power walk (<---we'll see...) But yeah, I feel you. I feel like such a blob! SO glad I'm not alone. I was wondering if something was wrong with me...

    @jamielee+1
Gym + pizza. NICE. Sounds like something the "new" me would do. We'll get through this, ladies! The want is there, we just need the will to physically catch up!
  • I wasn't the best at working out but I ate clean and kept like 80% paleo. Now all I want is carbs and I haven't worked out since January. I usually did random beach body workouts and hiked. I just started walking around the neighborhood again and I have my first hike of the year planned out. I have usually gone at least every other weekend AND I'm only doing 3 miles which is nothing!!!! I am trying not to worry about weight too much, especially because I already had a good 20-30 pounds to lose! I know that a lot of what I put on will come off quickly after birth and with breast feeding.

  • I have always envisioned a fit pregnancy! I'm active, eat healthy, but I have felt so terrible. I'm having joint issues, sciatic nerve issues, migraines, etc. LOL Even the thought of working out I just can't even entertain it. The best I've done is gone to the gym and walk the big track, while my husband does powerlifting and weights/cardio in the weight area. He leaves feeling great, I leave feeling swollen and exhausted. Hahaha. It's just not what I had in mind but I'm doing what I can to get by!
  • I have to add, I recently decided to go on a big nature hike on the first day it was 77° here in the Midwest!!!! I was gone for 2 1/2 hours. I totally overdid it because I felt good that day!! This was the day about 2 miles out on the trail my sciatic nerve starts really acting up!! This was before I really knew it was the sciatic nerve I thought it was just stiffness and a sore muscle in my lower back/butt!!!! LOL
I turned around and started heading back for the car knowing I was about two-ish miles from my car. By the time I got to the car I could hardly walk!!!! It was insane how fast it came on. I'm just so thankful I turned around when I did or I would've had to call my husband, or the wildlife center to have someone come and get me on a four wheeler!!!! Lol. I will say by the time I drove home and got to my driveway,I got out of my car and fell on the ground because I couldn't even put weight on my right leg! My husband had to carry me into the house and into the bed. It was pretty embarrassing but yeah that happened! Now I'm trying to be really careful if I feel it even a little bit I'm not going to put myself in a situation where I'm out in the middle of nowhere.
  • @preggersinparis haha well I have to try month 4 when I get home then -that's promising! I only tried it on month 1 , but I am also used to doing Jillian Michael's DVDs so that must be it! That woman is intense. Lol I bet if I did TA now I would def be out of breath! "A blob" is how I feel too - perfectly stated ha!
@LoveLee85 same exact with my husband and I ! He feels great and I leave like I just ran a marathon and need a nap! It's getting ridiculous lol. I totally busted out laughing about your hiking story bc the same exact thing happened to my hip after my attempted workout last week! I could barely stand on my right leg! It's so crazy how we all are experiencing the same issues.... I thought I was being a total wimp - feels great to share :) thanks guys!

@KCwalza146 I totally understand! I don't feel like myself anymore and it's scarey. I take pride in being fit! Hopefully I get it together in 2nd tri lol
  • Ugh YES!!! I certainly was never up to the standards that you ladies have described, but I have maintained a healthy and active lifestyle until I hit about 6 weeks. Now I can barely walk down the street or up the stairs. I have very low blood pressure so I can't push too much without passing out so I feel helpless and lazy and gross.
  • I hear ya. I was eating clean and I'm a fitness instructor too (yoga). I've been so sick this pregnancy and when I do eat I eat/crave things I wasn't eating before. Boo :-( So happy to be pregnant. It's just been harder this time around. I've still been teaching my 5 classes but sometimes it's a challenge.
  • I was an NPC bikini competitor before I got pregnant, so I completely understand. When I got pregnant carbs were the only thing that sounded good. I went from being so low carb I would go into ketosis, to eating tons of bread and pastas! Now that the sickness is going away, those foods are starting to become less appealing again. And now I'm noticing cellulite on my booty which helps me want to steer clear of those foods and get back to my clean eating! Just remember, you can always start back at your old life style and eating habits at anytime as long as it's healthy for the baby! Everyday is a new day to start over! Good luck!
  • I am so impressed with how much some of the ladies in this thread are doing! I am hoping it isn't too late to have a fit pregnancy. I have so little energy that the pregnancy DVDs I bought when I first found out I was pregnant have gone unused. Walking a mile to the park and back with my older child is about all I have energy for now. I haven't gained weight - thanks nausea - but eating pita chips and apple juice can't be that healthy. I am looking forward to being further into 2nd trimester!
  • I was definitely right there with you guys in the first trimester. Around week 13-14 I started feeling more like myself, but I also noticed some new cellulite pop up. So since then I've been hitting the gym 3x a week and this week I'm hoping to bump it up to 4x. I'm trying to take advantage of feeling better right now because I worry that with the third trimester I won't feel like working out so much.
  • Yes, Yes annnnnnnd YES. I wouldn't say I was a personal trainer level fit, but I worked out about 5x a week doing a mixture of heavy weights, sprinting, and distance running. I ate pretty clean *we have an organic garden and chickens we get eggs from and eat totally hormone free meat and very little processed foods* and considered myself healthy and now I am humble bragging.... ANYWAY.

First tri came and went and my eating and working out went down the freaking drain. I have always suffered from being "skinny fat" and my muscle mass is currently non-existent. Between headaches, to general exhaustion following my physically active job *usually get in about 10,000 steps a day just at work* my pregnancy pilates and yoga videos went by the wayside. I have been feeling pretty great since about 12 weeks, but I am focusing more on getting in as many nutrients as possible and drinking around 90 litres of water and I want to still get in my 10- 14,000 steps a day regardless of how I do it. I think as long as I feel good and can do most of the things I used to be able to do, I am happy.

Thanks for the thread and the posts ladies, nothing like preggo comisseration on our fitness life flops haha!! We got this- we are building new little bodies right now, way more impressive than building our own bodies, I would say ;-) ;-)
  • -also- I had pizza, a double cheeseburger, a milk shake AND spicy cheetos last week. *sorrynotsorry* ;-)
  • @jennsuzanne87 what you said!!! Lol
  • @sterjacks21 your post gives me some motivation then bc I've been noticing the same cellulite pop up bc of the food choices and lack of exercise! Pretty much low carb for me also beforehand. You are so right wecan get it back anytime we want!
  • -also- I had pizza, a double cheeseburger, a milk shake AND spicy cheetos last week. *sorrynotsorry* ;-)

Oh man, heading for the chips now, which probably just means I'm thirsty and could use a tall glass of water, but argh! I don't want that! Gimme the chips! I did work out today so..... #justify
  • It's just not easy! For me, even walking is painful for some reason (doc said I literally pulled a muscle down there somewhere?!?!)... I'm already kind of sporadic when it comes to working out, (mostly hiking, weather related, and other sports) but I really wanted to have a fit pregnancy.  I bought "What to Expect" workout DVD and I actually enjoy it, it got me moving even on sluggish days with only 10-15 min segments, so I'm motivated to do more than one. However, it was easy for me and so I bought "Fit & Sleek Prenatal Physique" - again, 15 minute segments. This one is good- I just did the lower body and I'm going to be sore tomorrow! By no means am I working out like crazy, but it gets me moving and keeps me strong, and the convenience of having it at home and that its short makes it a little more likely for it to get done :)
Just waiting for CT to warm up so I can get outside more, too!!!

I was actually giggling as I typed it out!! Lol! I felt like a huge loser. Haha. I didn't realize what was happening so I was just trying to push through to be tough! Ouch, I paid for it for two days. I'm a FTM and he's a FTD, so he kept asking me how I fell. I was like all I did was speed walk?! He couldn't understand for a few minutes. He kept thinking I fell down on the hike.
  • Wait what's exercise??

Haha jk. But really, I'm proud of myself If I take the dogs for a walk! ;)

I'm a PT too and my entire first trimester and a few weeks into my second I felt like a slug! All I wanted to do was sleep and barely had the energy to take my dog for a mile walk! I'm getting back to running 2-3 miles a couple times a week when it started getting warmer (the temps dropped too low for my body's liking) so I haven't run in a couple weeks, but I'm trying to do at least one TRX workout a week for 30 minutes until I can handle that without feeling like I'm going to keel over afterwards. I'm hating the way I feel, but I'm trying to accept that my body can't handle what it could a few months ago currently, but I'll get there eventually. Hang in there!

  • I totally know how you ladies are feeling. Basically from weeks 5 through 12 I thought I was going to die. I went from swimming 5 to 6 days a week and drinking Kale smoothies to sitting on the couch eating only Taco Bell and Sour Patch Kids. Thankfully I'm feeling better and getting my normal energy/eating habits back. As for those celebrities, I guarantee no one was taking pictures of them in the first trimester  ;)
  • I feel you... 16 weeks here & hoping to get back to the gym tomorrow perhaps? Ugh so frustrating i still have not gotten this miraculous burst of energy everyone talks about in 2nd Tri -_- I was eating low carb and worked out 3-4 times a week.... I was in better shape than I had been in years. Soooo yeah this has been rough haha eating crappy and not exercising just trying to freakin survive each day! We'll get there. Still have some time for the good habits to kick back in :O
  • I'm 16 weeks and finally finding my clean habits appealing again. I was swollen from water and carbs until 2-3 weeks ago. My students asked if I magically dropped a few pounds and if the baby wa sok. Haha
Monday My run was only 3 miles but oh well. Lifting is getting me dirty looks though .. don't appreciate it.
  • I'm in the same place as far as missing my former workout routine, but for me I've been experiencing such severe pelvic pain (turns out from my previous pregnancy my pelvic bones are now unaligned) that sometime I physically can't move. It will drop me to my knees in tears. It's been depressing for me to think about how strong and able-bodied I was before getting pregnant to being so limited by the pain. I've been going to PT for 5 weeks now and nothing seems to really help. At this point I get in the gym and try various modifications of my former workouts until the pain sets in or I break a sweat, which ever happens first.

My husband doesn't understand my frustration because working out is not a part of his daily routine like it was for me. He can't sympathize with me feeling this overwhelming sense of weakness.

And to make matters worse, if I didn't have this pain my pregnancy would be fairly symptom free at this point. At this point, I'm just hoping as the baby gets bigger the added weight will stabilize my pelvic bones and the pain will become less prominent.

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest. :((
  • I feel ur pain I have just In The last yr and half lost 80lbs and I feel like it is slowly (or not so slowly) packing back on.i use to workout 5x a week and the last four weeks can barely get my butt of the couch.but looking up I just went back to a trx class last night and felt so amazing after (muscles notfeeling so hot today lol) but really hoping to get back into a rhythm
Hope u can find urs too
  • I feel the same way! I probably had about 15 lbs to lose prior to getting pregnant, and I'm only 14 weeks and have gained about 5 lbs...and it's not like I have a cute little bump, I just look really chunky! Prior to getting pregnant, I ran about 4x per week and I'm just finishing my yoga teacher training (sometimes I need cookies just to get through it!!!) but have had to slow down from vinyasa classes to hatha level 1's, which I can barely get through!

I really appreciate knowing I'm not alone in how I feel. This is my first and I desperately want to eat healthy (like I was doing before) and have a bump to show instead of looking like I just let it all go!

  • Before pregnancy I ran about 25-30 miles a week, and did workouts like bootcamps. My first trimester I was so nauseous and all I craved were carbs!! I'm 15.5 weeks now and the past two weeks have been fab!! I'm back to working out (low impact) and eating healthy
  • @Lessiek I hope I start to get some of what you got!
  • Just wanted to share the workout I've been doing. Gets your heart rate up but it's not overwhelming. Give it a try! imageimage
  • I finallyyyy made it to the gym yesterday and omg it was tough haha 2 months off and now obviously being pregnant took its toll. Thanks @mrscaterosales I'll have to try those :-). I was sitting at the leg press yesterday realizing that it was already extremely uncomfortable to have my legs pushed in that close to my tummy/bladder -_- lol Time to modify workouts
  • Feeling a burst of energy! Going to work out before it passes! Put me in coach...I'm ready to play! (This is just embarrassing, I have to rev myself up to do a prenatal workout video...)
  • I feel like I'm pretty much on the same page as everyone else here! I mean I was never a PT but at one point I was in shape lol. I've been cleaning the house A LOT lately because it had gotten into pretty bad shape during my first trimester and I CANNOT handle clutter even in drawers and cabinets. I know it's not a workout but it's a heck of a lot more than I had gotten during my first trimester!!

I'm hoping to start a custom workout plan that mainly involves by Booty because I had some cellulite before pregnancy and it has not improved and we are going to the beach in May!!!
  • Lots of squats and donkey kicks for that booty missy! @akcohlmia Cleaning and laundry is a workout no matter what anyone says, so good for you!
