$1000 stroller! Hell no.

So I was looking on Amazon for stroller/car seat combos and came across this gem. Who in their right mind would spend $1000 on a stroller.

  • I agree w/ you.  But a lot of people do it for some reason!  Status symbol or something.

  • I almost died when I saw those too! Then I looked at Target and breathed a sigh of relief...
  • I went into one of those baby boutiques a few weeks ago with a friend just to look around. You know those places are ungodly expensive. They had a carseat/stroller combo that was really cool. Until I saw the price tag.. it was nearly $3,000.00 I could not believe it!!

You could pair this lovely dress with it? (My apologies if anyone owns this dress, maybe the picture doesn't do it justice). It reminds me of the Kim k outfit in which she supposedly "broke the internet". Regardless, someone spent almost $400 on it originally...but really does that stroller power itself?

Oh boy. That looks like it would be a sauna in dress form. I'd swear bullets in that thing. Not flattering at all.
  • @savwhit that's exactly what my sister in law said!
  • @mathesq0 it's seriously the worst dress ever. I knew that maternity clothes weren't the cutest most flattering and fashionable but I mean that trash bag takes it to a new level. I'm in awe of how hideous it is. And the price? HAH that's funny.

I mostly just lurk on here (and I'm pretty sure my siggy never updated from my last pregnancy so it may say I'm like 500 weeks pregnant), but I wanted to chime in on this post.

We have this stroller. There are 1000 reasons why I chose this stroller and why I love it, but that's not really the point of this post.

Parents spend different amounts of money on what they think is in the best interest of their kids and family. It be $1000 on a stroller, paying for a nanny vs daycare, or $50,000 on private school tuition. Just because it's not the decision you would make doesn't mean it is wrong or crazy.

Everything is relative and I'm sure someone could look at the stroller you end up buying and think that it is a crazy amount of money to spend. After all, no one NEEDS a stroller or 95% of the baby gear you will end up buying.

For the record, one of the main reasons we bought this stroller was because of how high the seat sits. Both my husband andand the height of this seat facilitates eye contact and interaction. We didn't get it as a status symbol

I agree with all of this except the 'nobody NEEDS a stroller' comment. LOL There are a 1,000 times I have NEEDED a stroller or I wouldn't have been able to function/do anything at all. Just because you don't depend on a stroller for your daily needs, doesn't mean others wouldn't die without one.

There are plenty of people who baby wear and never purchase a stroller, which is exactly my point. Clearly, I have the same thoughts that you do about the usefulness of a stroller, but everyone should make the decision that they think is best for them and their family. No judgement either way!

  • I'm one of those parents who will be looking into different strollers and this is one on my list. To some parents high quality is no expense for your baby.
  • I don't think I'll of parents who buy expensive things, just the manufacturer. If there's an expensive stroller that works best for your family and lifestyle and you can afford it, buy it! What's messed up to me is that it probably didn't cost much more to make than the everyday, strollers the majority of people buy, so it's unfortunate that companies would charge so much more for it!!

Some do wear baby, but you can't go jogging and wear baby. LOL You stated that nobody NEEDS a stroller, that's what I was commenting on. That's all.
  • To each their own. I personally wouldn't drop 1K on a stroller.
  • If you live in a city, it is totally worth it to spend more on a stroller. We have an expensive stroller, and strolling through city streets, over curbs, cracks in the sidewalk, potholes, etc. was so much easier with the stroller we got. Plus it is easier to use and much more convenient. I think about 90% of the women I saw out and about in the city had our exact stroller for those reasons. I doubt anyone did it for status.

It's the UPPAbaby Vista for anyone looking. I'd highly recommend it.

  • I completely understand if it is your main mode of transportation in a city. I however live on an island in the pacific north west. A simple jogging stroller was good for me. I do intend on doing more baby wearing this time around.
  • I can't imagine spending that much on a stroller (though when buying a double stroller we probably won't be too far from that). However, if I were like Beyonce rich or something, I would spend $10,000 on a stroller if I thought it would make my life easier. My BIL and SIL were making fun of how expensive those Mamaroo rocker things are and I was like, listen, if it will allow you to put your baby down for 5 minutes while you pee and get a snack, it is worth every penny. They were gifted one and loved it.
  • Okay, don't judge me...but I've always though the Stokke Explory was SUPER cute. Haha! I know it's crazy money, and I could never afford a stroller that was so expensive anyway...but if I could, I would totally buy it. LOL!!! I just love the way it looks. Too bad money doesn't grow on trees, right?!

agreed! I think it's insane to charge that much for a stroller. but, I bought my stroller at a thrift store AND I talked them down on the price; so clearly I'm not the target market for these "baby BMWs" lol.
  • A lot of parents look at these items as an investment. Let's say the average person on here has 2 kids. If you buy the 1k stroller, you are probably going to be using it for about 8 years. (4 years/kid) That's only $125 a year for that stroller. I would rather buy a quality stroller up front and have it last for 8 years than buy a bunch of crappy strollers that break down after a couple of years. A lot of people are able to resell their nice strollers and recoup a good portion of their initial investment. Just sayin! :)
  • If I felt comfortable spending the money on an UPPAbaby Vista (another high end stroller), I would totally do it, I think those strollers are awesome! So while a part of me understands how it could seem silly to spend so much on a stroller, I totally get why someone would spend that kind of money on an awesome stroller. We'll splurge on some things, but I'm eyeing some really nice and modern looking gliders and ottomans, and we're considering buying a treadmill for once the baby is here and we don't have time to get to the gym. If the stroller was more important to us, we'd probably be spending the money for a super nice one. We all have our priorities I suppose :)

  • I work as the concierge at a fancy condo tower and I've been eyeballing the strollers that all the moms have. Then I start researching them and realize that I get paid $12 an hour to sit at the desk in a building where condos are upwards of $700,000, and I REALLY need to stop thinking I can afford the same baby gear that all these lucky women have, lol.

If I had the money to spend on a $1000 stroller, I absolutely would in a heartbeat, but that's not the reality I live in.

For our particular financial situation, we probably wouldn't spend that much on a stroller right now. Maybe in a few years with a new baby, depending on how our careers go (well, mostly his; mine is more part-time).

I did want to mention, though, that I've received a lot of "helpful advice" from well-meaning people, but advice that doesn't necessarily apply to me, and advice that feels a bit shaming. Like, for example, I volunteer at an animal shelter, and a staff member there strongly encouraged me to not "waste money" on new maternity clothes, since they're only worn for short periods of time. I realize this advise can help many women, but I am fortunate enough to be able to afford new maternity clothes, and I don't typically shop at thrift stores (with that said, my husband and I certainly donate plenty of old clothes to thrift stores).

On another note, my parents are in a different financial world from my husband and me, which can be awkward. My mom likes to complain about how "so-and-so" spent "such-and-such" amount of money on a particular baby item, and how this amount is ridiculous. To me, I feel that we should respect the fact that to some people an amount is reasonable (for them), and for others it is unreasonable. That $1000 stroller is unreasonable to some, reasonable to others, and cheap to a lucky few. It all depends on the value that you place on the item itself and on your personal financial resources.
  • I absolutely would buy this stroller if I had the money. It's gorgeous and is a dream to operate. If you have the money, what's the difference?

My britax with a 2nd car seat and base and all the crap we need to buy to make it work for 2 is looking like well over $1000. Good thing I got everything I asked for on our registry the first go, didn't have to spend much in the end.

  • I must not be "in my right mind" because I plan to buy a stroller likely in that price range and not just for functionality, it is also because I like the way the Buggaboos, Stokkes and UPPAbabys look (among other high end brands)! Gasp! We live in the city and it will be one of the main forms of transportation for baby. They are also high quality and will last beyond our first. When I am done with it I will likely donate it to another family. I also happen to love strollers and it is not something I mind splurging on while I save on other things. It must run in my blood because when I was born my grandmother had a designer pram shipped over from Europe - which we also will be restoring and using for my baby. Feel free to judge me but to each their own.
  • Thankfully we just got a free stroller from a family member yesterday.
But we still need to get the matching car seat that clips into it. After
looking around I am completely shocked how much things cost! I'm having
a hard time thinking about $200 for just a car seat... much less
$1,000! I would never spend that much on a stroller!

Since there is no baby yet we are testing out the new stroller with a teddy bear. Don't worry we won't take it for walks outside! We're not that weird. ;)

  • I think that people missed that Amazon will save you a whole $0.99 on that stroller! What a deal!!  =))

If you can afford something like that, more power to you. I cannot so to me it just seems frivolous!

On the subject of new maternity clothes, I only buy new clothes. I don't really like thrift stores, not that there is anything wrong with them. I do donate a lot of my stuff to them. I don't have much money but I can work deals and get new clothes. Like yesterday at Kohl's I had $10 Kohl's cash and 20% off and all the items I bought were already 50% off! Yeah, that was pretty awesome.

Guess I'm crazy, I'll be purchasing an orbit system that's a little over 1k. Different parents differnt perogatives!

This one too. When I lived in DC I was obsessed with the Stokke and Orbit strollers. Honestly I looked at Stokke cribs back then too. I remember telling DH about them and their cost and of course he looked at me like I was crazy. I told DH I want to see how he feels being that person we stare at with the massive stroller while getting on the metro. Also DH is 6'5" and these strollers are definitely tall people friendly.

We weren't even TTC back them, but let me tell you. If I could get one of these strollers now I would.
  • I know this wasn't asked here but I highly recommend the City Mini! Or other Baby Jogger version. With our first, we didn't have a car and lived downtown in a city and used it for roughly 3 years and have had friends borrow it from time to time. It's in perfect condition to use for the next one. Baby Jogger had great customer service too when the airline broke a part, the replacement part was easy and cheap.

  • I showed this to my hubby saying that I would never spend that much, and he loves it & told me to consider it! Touché!

Also, the same stroller in blue is $200 cheaper at $899... WTF?
  • I'll be using a basic stroller my friend passed on to me and it will work for our needs. But ... If I had more dispensable money and wouldn't miss that $1,000, I must admit I would probably splurge and get a fancy stroller! After all, you can haul this thing through the sand at the beach haha!! At this point in my life, I'm too money conscious and frugal (out of necessity), so I couldn't imagine a purchase like that.
